Jamie Vardy snubs Arsenal to sign new four-year deal at Leicester City

Jamie VardyJamie Vardy has signed a new £100,000 a week contract to finally end Arsenal’s hopes of signing the England international. Vardy has agreed a four-year extension and will be staying with the Premier League champions in a huge boost for manager Claudio Ranieri.

Arsenal had triggered the striker’s £21million release clause earlier this month and offered him a lucrative contract, but there has been a growing sense that he will stay at the King Power Stadium.

Arsene Wenger had suggested earlier this week that Vardy was set to turn down a move to the Emirates and Leicester have now confirmed he has committed his future to last season’s title winners.

“Leicester City have today agreed with the representatives of Jamie Vardy to extend the England international’s contract with the Premier League champions for a further four years.

“Both parties hope that this announcement will end recent speculation regarding Jamie’s future and confirm his long term commitment to Leicester City Football Club.

“Jamie will continue to focus all of his efforts on trying to achieve success with the England team at the European Championships in France.

“There will be no further comment from either the club or the player on this matter until the conclusion of the tournament.”

Vardy has been considering his next move while on international duty but it is understood he was always reluctant to leave Leicester.

Signed for £1million from Fleetwood Town in 2012, Vardy has become a Premier League star with Leicester and played a huge part in guiding them to the title last season.

Wenger will now have to assess other striker targets after a blow that raises questions over Arsenal’s current standing in English football.
