I’m sorry for the ‘misleading apology’ – Acting ISD boss pleads

0
The acting Director of ISD, Mr ArthurThe Acting Director of the Information Services Department, Mr Francis Kwarteng Arthur has apologised for issuing an apology in the name of the Department for the error-ridden brochure used for Ghana’s 59th Independence Day.
According to him, he produced the brochure in his capacity as Chairperson of the Communication Subcommittee of the 59th Independence Anniversary Planning Committee, and not as the Acting Director of ISD. Mr. Arthur on Monday issued a statement to apologise on behalf of the ISD for the brochure that was fraught with grammatical expressions, misrepresentation of facts, poor spellings and other inaccuracies at the backdrop of public criticism. “The Department, which authored the content of the brochure, accepts responsibility and wishes to unreservedly apologise for the development,” the statement issued by Mr Arthur read in part. But the statement infuriated the ISD staff who challenged the Director’s claim that the Department authored the content of the brochure which addresed Kenya’s President, Uhuru Kenyatta as Ghana’s President. On Tuesday the staff staged what could be described as a sit down strike as they demanded answers from Mr Kwarteng who eventually met them for a closed door durbar at which even he apologised. However, Mr Arthur insisted that he was responsible for the content of the error-ridden independence anniversary brochure, which has since sparked controversy and grabbed international headlines. “After meeting with my colleagues, and [after] deliberations,  I have acknowledged that I should have issued it in my capacity as the chair of the Communications subcommittee of the National Planning Committee. I’m assuming full responsibility. I have listened to their suggestions and I’m prepared to move along with my team collectively,” Mr Arthur told journalists after the meeting. Meanwhile, Graphic Online reports that Ms Munira Karim, the Regional News Editor of ISD said the Communication Subcommittee should take the blame for the errors in the brochure adding that if it was credit the subcommittee would have taken it. She said that it was unfair to rope the ISD into a situation they knew nothing about. Ms Karim explained that under normal circumstances, ISD as the main public relations outfit of government, has a media liaison office which should have issued the accreditation for the anniversary programme but for about six years now, the department has been shut out of participating in national activities. “We are professionals here and at least give us the responsibility and let us fail. In that case you can apologise on our behalf but this is the case we didn’t take part in anything so why do you apologise on our behalf,” she said. Ms Karim also stated that the ISD has has ceased to take up roles in national programs and virtually does nothing. She said the department had hoped that Mr Kwarteng, a former presidential staffer until his appointment, would use his links to get the department  jobs to do. Information gathered by Graphic Online from some of the staff at the premises of the ISD is that the department has one of the best printing machines in the country, but due to large amounts of debt owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) it has been disconnected and for that reason are unable to publish or print any materials. Babies at risk as four share one cot due to congestion at KATH

A cot that is required to take a baby now host at least two babies at a time due to congestionNewborn babies at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital In Kumasi are at health risk as congestion at the Mother and Baby Unit has forced authorities to put four babies in one cot.
Currently, over 100 babies are occupying a room designed to admit only fifty newly born babies. The Deputy Director of Nursing Services, Mrs Rose Yeboah, said the current situation at the unit is medically unwise because each baby should occupy one cot to prevent cross infection. “The babies are not supposed to be lying in twos in the cots. Each baby should have its own court but the situation is difficult here. We have three and four babies lying in the same court,” he said. Although the unit was designed to take only 50 babies at a time, Mrs Yeboah said there were 115 babies at the time TV3 Online team visited the facility, saying  “This unit is suppose to take 50 babies but at the moment we have about 115 babies”, she bemoaned.
IMG_1931 babies in cotMrs Yeboah explained because KATH is a referral facility, they are unable to turn away patients, and expressed hope that the completion of the halted maternity and children’s block will solve the congestion problem. Mrs Rose Yeboah attributed the congestion to some mothers’ inability to settle their medical bills on time. “Because of the congestion in the unit, some of the mothers sometimes abscond leaving their babies behind, without being noticed by authorities,” she said, adding parents inability to pay their bills has become a huge challenge for the hospital. Meanwhile, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology School of Business has presented a cash of GHC3,000 to settle the bills of some patients at the Mother and Baby Unit, and the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital. The Acting Dean of the KNUST School of Business (KSB), Dr Ahmed Agyapong noted that the donation forms part of the 10th anniversary celebration of the School of Business “Our students will be very soon be passing out and be occupying responsible positions in society. We want them to be thinking about the support they can give to society when managing and occupying business/corporate positions,” he said. He expressed worry that over 100 babies are occupying a space meant for only 50. Dr Agyapong hinted of their decision to establish partnership with the unit to continue supporting mothers and their babies.   By Ibrahim Abubakar|tv3network.com|Ghana

Mac ransomware caught before large number of computers infected

0
MacThe first known ransomware attack on Apple Inc’s (AAPL.O) Mac computers, which was discovered over the weekend, was downloaded more than 6,000 times before the threat was contained, according to a developer whose product was tainted with the malicious software.
Hackers infected Macs with the “KeRanger” ransomware through a tainted copy of Transmission, a popular program for transferring data through the BitTorrent peer-to-peer file sharing network. So-called ransomware is a type of malicious software that restricts access to a computer system in some way and demands the user pay a ransom to the malware operators to remove the restriction. KeRanger, which locks data on Macs so users cannot access it, was downloaded about 6,500 times before Apple and developers were able to thwart the threat, said John Clay, a representative for the open-source Transmission project. That is small compared to the number of ransomware attacks on computers running Microsoft Corp’s (MSFT.O) Windows operating system. Cyber security firm Symantec Corp (SYMC.O) observed some 8.8 million attacks in 2014 alone. Still, cyber security experts said they expect to see more attacks on Macs as the KeRanger hackers and other groups look for new ways to infect Mac computers. “It’s a small number but these things always start small and ramp up huge,” said Fidelis Cybersecurity threat systems manager John Bambenek. “There’s a lot of Mac users out there and a lot of money to be made.” Symantec, which sells anti-virus software for Macs, warned on its blog that “Mac users should not be complacent.” The post offered tips on protecting against ransomware. The Transmission project provided few details about how the attack was launched. “The normal disk image (was) replaced by the compromised one” after the project’s main server was hacked, said Clay. He added that “security on the server has since been increased” and that the group was in “frequent contact” with Apple as well as Palo Alto Networks, which discovered the ransomware on Friday and immediately notified Apple and Transmission. An Apple representative said the company quickly took steps over the weekend to prevent further infections by revoking a digital certificate that enabled the rogue software to install on Macs. Transmission responded by removing the malicious 2.90 version of its software from its website (www.transmissionbt.com). On Sunday, it released version 2.92, which its website says automatically removes the ransomware from infected Macs. Forbes earlier reported on the number of KeRanger downloads, citing Clay. Nike suspends contract with Sharapova

0
Maria Sharapova made the quarterfinals of this years's Australian OpenNike has suspended its relationship with Maria Sharapova after the five-time Grand Slam tennis champion admitted failing a drug test.
Also, Swiss watchmaker Tag Heuer cut its ties with the tennis star. Nike said it was “saddened and surprised” at her admission that she tested positive for a banned substance at the Australian Open in January. Ms Sharapova said she had been taking meldonium since 2006, on the advice of her family doctor. Nike ‘monitoring situation’ Her relationship with Nike dates back to when she was 11 years old. “We have decided to suspend our relationship with Maria while the investigation continues,” Nike said. “We will continue to monitor the situation.” In 2010, the 28-year-old Russian tennis player signed a new eight-year contract with the US sportswear giant worth $70m (£49m) as well as a cut on sales of her own branded clothes. Tag Heuer was in talks to extend its deal with Ms Sharapova, which ran out at the end of last year. However, Tag Heuer said those talks have now been suspended and the company has decided not to renew the contract. Sponsors ‘burned’ Ms Sharapova is the world’s highest paid female athlete after earning nearly $30m in 2015 from winnings and endorsements, according to Forbes. These include contracts with Evian, Tag Heuer, Porsche. In 2014, Porsche named her as its first female ambassador. Ms Sharapova, who lives in Florida, is also the face of Avon perfume Luck. Paul Swangaurd, from the Warsaw Sports Marketing Center at the University of Oregon, said Nike’s decision reflected a “new era” for the way sponsors deal with these issues. Nike is taking a “very proactive approach”, which resulted from “them being burned by a lot of athletes over the years, and growing impatient with putting so much investment behind athletes that potentially comes back to bite them in the court of public opinion”. Last month, Nike dropped Manny Pacquiao after the boxer said homosexual people were “worse than animals”. The company also severed ties with cyclist and drugs cheat Lance Armstrong as well as athlete Oscar Pistorius, who killed his girlfriend. Failed test Ms Sharapova tested positive for meldonium, a substance she said she had been taking since 2006 for health issues. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said she would be provisionally suspended from 12 March. Ms Sharapova said: “I did fail the test and take full responsibility for it.” She said she had taken meldonium after being given it by her family doctor and had known the drug by the name mildronate. “A few days ago, after I received a letter from the ITF, I found out it also has another name of meldonium, which I did not know,” she said.   Source: BBC

Tanzanian teachers get free bus travel in Dar es Salaam

0
Tanzania's John Magufuli has become famous for his reformsTeachers in parts of Tanzania’s capital Dar es Salaam are being given free transport to and from their schools.
Kinondoni District Commissioner Paul Makonda said he hopes to expand the scheme across the entire city. The trips on the “daladala” bus taxis will be paid for by the city’s associations, echoing a scheme where soldiers travel for free on buses. Mr Makonda set up the scheme after First Lady Janeth Magufuli visited a local school in February. Her former colleagues at the Mbuyuni primary school, where she taught for over 15 years, mentioned room shortages and transport difficulties as current problems. Teachers greeted the news with smiles and proudly showed the new ID cards showing they are entitled to free transport to the BBC’s Tulanana Bohela in Dar es Salaam. Kinondoni, which has a population of over one million, currently provides students with 50% discount on travel and has around 35,000 teachers. The ID cards are expected to be available for 3,000 teachers by the end of the week. Journeys which normally cost around 400 shillings (18 US cents; 12p) are free between 05:30 and 08:00 and 15:00 to 17:00 to those holding the special card. Source: BBC

Disaster in waiting: Asutuare residents thread dangerously through patchy bridge

0
patchy bridgeResidents of Asutuare in the Shai Osudoku district are living in fear as they risk their lives daily to cross a dilapidated bridge hanging loosely over a river.
The bridge which is fast deteriorating links Asutuare, which is in the Greater Accra Region to Akuse and its neighbouring communities in the Eastern region. From a distance, the deceptive bridge appears to be in good shape. A closer look reveals the danger it is made of, posing as a death trap to thousands. Some commuters are not able to use the scary bridge built over 50 years ago. It never saw any major renovation until two years ago when some wooden pallets were replaced with metals. The immediate past assembly member for the area, Sampson Tettey told TV3 the assembly has plans for the bridge. But he partly blamed the residents for the delay in getting the bridge reconstructed. He claimed although an alternative route has been provided, residents have refused to use it on the basis that it is not motorable.
