Medical doctor dies in church after working 3 days nonstop shift at Lagos hospital

0

A Lagos-based medical doctor, Umoh Michael, working at the state’s University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, slumped and died in a church after he reportedly performed a 72-hour surgery without.

This was disclosed by the Association of Resident Doctors in a letter dated September 19, and addressed to LUTH’s chief medical director.

The doctors in the letter titled ”An Appeal By The House Officers Of LUTH” accused their senior colleagues of bullying, giving them stressful call hours without breaks, and not providing feeding and good accommodation.

The letter read,

“We the house officers are in deep grief over the loss of our colleague, a co-House officer (Dr Umoh Michael) who died on 17th September, 2023, after having a 72-hour call in the Neurosurgery Unit. He is said to have been on call for 72 hours before arriving home on Sunday morning to get set for church service, reaching his worship center (United Evangelical Church) where he slumped in the church at about 11 a.m.

“His roommate attested to the fact that Umoh Michael has barely slept in their apartment over the past one week as he was always on call or the day he returns home is around 3am after surgeries and other activities in the Neurosurgery Unit.”

The protest letter pointed out that the doctors have long standing challenges since they resumed housemanship in the hospital and that one of the most striking challenges they face is the bullying they receive from their senior colleagues, stressful call hours without breaks in between, no call food, no good accommodation.

Below is a copy of the letter;

Police have restored calm at Ofankor following a violent incident Wednesday morning that saw the blocking of public roads and the burning of tires.

Initial investigations suggest that the unrest was triggered by a land dispute between landguards and some wood sellers.

Security measures in the area have been reinforced by the Police, and the affected road has been reopened to normal traffic.

In a brief statement, the police confirmed that they are actively investigating the incident to identify and apprehend those responsible.

According to available information, the confrontation occurred between wood sellers and landguards at Ofankor Moose along the Accra-Nsawam road.

Citi News’ Adwoa Tenkoramaa reported that the root cause of the conflict stems from the landowner’s decision to evict the wood sellers, despite having received rent payments from them for the last three years.

The situation escalated when landguards suspected to have been sent by the land owner descended on the premises, firing shots and looting shops, resulting in one wood seller suffering gunshot wounds. In response, the wood sellers took retaliatory action.

“The song Destiny, basically, I’m taking control of my life, and I am the one in charge of it. Nobody else can move my life in any other way. Just me. It’s inspired by everything my life is saying today. Like, I have just been moving like this at my own pace, in my own time,” she disclosed.
