Artists vs. Artificial Intelligence

0

Artists are constantly ripped off of their authentic work, from museum robberies to non-fungible tokens and, now, art generated by artificial intelligence (AI). It is no secret that the creative industry is competitive and pays next to nothing, so why are artists being targeted? While many people are excited about the development of AI art, others are scared about what it means for the future of their careers.

AI Analysis

As worried as artists are about AI, some are eagerly researching its applications and trying to discover everything it has in store. James “Jim” Porto, an RIT alum and assistant professor in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences, talked about what he has discovered through his experimentation with AI.

“If all that mattered was the result … it’s a good result,” he started. “Working with it, though, is profoundly unsatisfying.”

With over 30 years of experience using manipulated photography, Porto knows how much hard work goes into creating great artwork and how AI takes all of that away.

“AI does what I was doing so much quicker, so much better … but you don’t have as much control,” Porto said. “I’m really glad I’m not competing as a photo illustrator right now.”

Wil Gross, a third year New Media Design student, had a similar thought.

“I think art for the sake of art is garbage … there is no human impression, and that’s what art is about,” Gross stated.

Rip-off or Resourceful?

Artists, professors and students alike are all navigating the balance between when and how to use AI, and if it should even be used at all. The consensus is that AI can be a great tool for artists to use during the creative process, such as for ideation and inspiration. In fact, many AI-powered tools are integrated into Illustrator, Photoshop and other editing programs.

For instance, the “Retype (Beta)” tool in Illustrator allows editors to paste an image with typography and provides the closest font match. Another example is the “Remove” tool in Photoshop, which lets users brush over unwanted content with a similar replacement.

“Art has meaning behind it,” noted Sam Cazer, a second year New Media Design student. “Only a human can create art, but AI will be another tool that artists or designers use.”

Many students have already begun to explore and experiment with this new piece of technology, finding ways that it could help them, instead of hurt them.

“I prefer to use AI to enhance my projects,” said Alexa Contreras, a third year New Media Design student. “I think it can be used as a resource to take your work a step further or to think of new opportunities that you hadn’t thought of before. You can reference a lot of things that you might not have thought about.”

Fear of the Future

Implementing AI as a tool proves resourceful when trying to make workflow more efficient, but this becomes controversial when using it in place of the work. This is where the fear of AI replacing artists’ jobs starts. Porto and Cazer both mentioned how there was fear historically with the advent of photography.

Painters were scared that photographers were going to take over their industry, but that never happened. Instead, painting and photography became their separate mediums, which is what Porto believes will happen with AI.

“It’s going to be its own medium,” he stated. “It’s going to have the same market share, though. [AI] steps on the toes of photo illustrators.”

Using AI as a tool proves to be resourceful when trying to make a workflow more efficient, but using it in place of the work is where controversy can arise, which This is where the fear of AI replacing people’s jobs stems from. Porto and Cazer both expressed how this behavior happens historically with photography. Painters were scared that it was going to take over their industry. It didn’t. Instead, painting and photography became their own separate mediums, which is what Porto believes will happen with AI.

“It’s another medium…it going to be its own medium,” he stated. “It’s going to have the same market share, though. [AI] steps on the toes of photo illustrators.”

This gets into what makes people afraid — how far is too far? AI is quick and efficient, and if it can create the same type of work photo illustrators and designers make, why hire someone else to do the work? The result lacks authenticity, but that is not a concern for corporations. Companies may be able to save time and money using AI, but the software lacks the fine-tuning that artists can achieve.

Although it can be helpful, many artists are facing the reality of what their future careers may look like with the integration of AI. Jennifer Zhang, a fourth year Graphic Design student, talked about her fears with AI.

“As a graphic design major, I’m worried about AI taking over and there are not as many jobs,” Zhang said. “Using [AI] will be super easy to do and the positions for a company might be taken by [it].”

Silver Linings Ahead?

With all that said, people are finding ways to make really cool, unique art with AI. Artists on Instagram, including Tim Tadder (@timtadder) and Joshua Vermillion (@joshuavermillion), are exploring the world — or “medium” — of AI and integrating their own style to create incredible work. They curate their inputs and prompts to replicate the style of work they did previous to AI. For some pieces, it is hard to tell the difference.

So what does this mean? Are the creations they have made with AI truly their work? It is really hard to say, and as of now, numerous legal issues are projected to arise if AI were to be implemented commercially.

But with the growing popularity of AI, we may start to see an increase in traditional art forms, such as photography and illustration. Despite the ease and accessibility of AI, it cannot create the same value of work that a human can, no matter how advanced it is. AI cannot capture the real moments, nor can it create the physical texture that oil paintings and charcoal drawings have.

People still care and appreciate the hard work that artists do to express their craft, and with the inauthenticity of AI artwork, that appreciation and value is just going to increase. Although realistic, AI simply cannot match the human element of artwork.

As Porto stated, “there’s a deadness to it, there’s a lack of soul, something off about it … but it’s amazing.”

Read this: Do you feel abused in your relationship?

0

This article will be written as if the males are the abusers and the females are the victims, which is true according to research the majority of the time.

However, if you are a male who is the victim or a female who is the perpetrator, please just swap the pronouns in your head.

It is easy to understand that emotional and physical abuse can be traumatic. It is also easy to understand that severe verbal abuse (i.e. yelling, name-calling) can be traumatic. However, there are more subtle types of verbal abuse that can be equally traumatic.

The abuser could be verbally abusing you consciously or unconsciously.

The underlying purpose of the abuse is often to make sure the abuser gets his way, stays in control, avoids being the vulnerable one, or can believe he is “right”.

The victim of the abuse is often the more pliable of the two, trying to adapt and adjust to the relationship situation to make it work.

Here are three statements I’ve heard from victims of subtle verbal abuse:

  1. “I don’t know, maybe he’s right. Maybe it’s me.”
  2. “I always feel like I am walking on eggshells around him.”
  3. “I always feel like I’m the crazy one.”

One particular couple I was seeing was comprised of a very emotional female and a very repressed, yet successful male. She would express some very legitimate feelings about some real issues in the relationship (this was during the session). He deflected her important statements and made some complaints about her that also were true.

She got more agitated because he was not listening and then he said that this emotionality is what made him think of divorce. At that point, he looked at me and said: “You see the crazy person I live with?” And I responded: “Yes and I see the ‘crazymaking person’ she lives with.”

As you can imagine, that was an interesting session that continued with the hope that this subtle verbal abuse (it was subtle until he called her crazy) would be recognized by him as provocative and unacceptable.

The verbal abuser has a hard time owning his stuff. The victim often takes too much responsibility for the relationship problems. If you recognize yourself as a victim or a perpetrator of subtle verbal abuse, do yourself a great favor and get some professional help.

Subtle verbal abuse can deprive both partners of a healthy and robust marriage. It saps the emotional and physical health of each person, especially the victim. It can trigger old wounds and deprive those involved of healthy self-esteem.

Low self-esteem can affect how people are in their other relationships and it can lower the chances of career and financial success. Please address this problem. There is a reason to hope.

I won’t waste my body to give birth unless I’m paid £250,000 – Jenny Darling

0

A London-based influencer, Jenny Darling has affirmed her stand on the fact that she won’t ‘sacrifice’ her body to mother a baby unless certain conditions are met, including receiving a £250K annual allowance, a push present, and a comprehensive postpartum makeover

Jenny Darlings, 23, from Bishopsgate, London, laid out her ‘non-negotiables’ for pregnancy, emphasizing the need for compensation for the potential impact on her physical and mental well-being.

According to a report from Daily Mail, Jenny said she would require marriage with a prenuptial agreement before thinking of having a baby, and she’d like a ‘babymoon’ abroad.

Post-birth, she insists on a £250,000 annual allowance to cover therapy, personal training, and any necessary expenses for both herself and the baby.

Jenny Darling’s requirements extend further to include a doula and a housekeeper for the initial six months postpartum, followed by a weekly cleaner afterwards.

Her demands also encompass a luxurious push present, such as a car or apartment, and a comprehensive mummy makeover featuring a tummy tuck and breast augmentation.

In her words;

“Motherhood is priceless. You can’t put a number on what is worth sacrificing. Creating a human life takes a lot of sacrifice. I’d never put my body through that for free. I’m not built to suffer.

“I’ve wanted to be childless since I started periods. I asked doctors to take my uterus out. Kids are expensive. I wouldn’t want to bring a child into this world to suffer.

“I would have kids on the terms it’s a good motherhood experience for me. I don’t want kids. If it was to happen these are my non-negotiables.”

Jenny added that she would need to be married before getting pregnant.

“I would need to be married before I would even have a child – mainly because of my religion and protection for the baby. I want a prenup to cover anything that would impact my life – infidelity and things like that.

“I’d need a £250k annual allowance. For therapy sessions, a PT, all of the things you’d need to live. It’s investing in our life and future,” she added.

I almost quit Nollywood over sexual harassment – Mercy Aigbe

0

Popular Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has narrated how she almost left the Nigerian movie industry.

According to her, she faced constant sexual harassment from certain producers nearly led her to quit her acting career while narrating her challenges before making her way to the top.

Speaking in an interview with Morayo Afolabi-Brown on ‘Your View’, a talk show on TVC, Aigbe shared her distressing experiences how a producer made passes at her after a movie audition despite earning the role for an upcoming film.

Recalling a particularly disturbing incident, she recounted an encounter with a producer in Surulere who, despite offering her a role in an upcoming film after a successful audition, crossed boundaries that left her deeply unsettled.

“After I had passed three stages of the audition, I was given a minor role, which I told him that was not the character I was auditioning for. “He replied that the director said he did not know me, and that was why he wanted me to be close to him,” she narrated.

She went on to reveal the distressing moment when the producer made unwarranted advances, standing up to touch her.

Expressing her upset at the situation, she admitted, “I was very upset, and I thought if that was what it took to be an actress, I don’t want to be an actress anymore. I tore the script and left.”

The actress further shared the emotional toll this incident took on her, disclosing that she cried on her way home because, at the time, she was already a single mother and had left a well-paying job to pursue her passion in Nollywood.

People want to have threesome with my wife and I – Harold Amenyah

0

Popular Ghanaian actor and fashion icon Harold Amenyah has stated that he has been receiving numerous proposals for threesomes, involving himself and his wife, less than a year into their marriage.

The XOXO star believes that the proposals are coming on the heels of his response to an earlier interview on a relationship show a few weeks after his wedding, where he was asked about his willingness to try a threesome.

However, he clarified that his response which seemingly suggested that he was open to trying a threesome was taken out of context and that he has no intention of pursuing such an arrangement.

Stating his stance on the threesome arrangement in a recent appearance on UTV’s United Showbiz, he maintained “No threesome is coming on. It was taken out of context. It wasn’t something that I was pushing for it to happen. I was asked that before marriage, what haven’t I done before, and I said that was one of the things I didn’t do.”

He continued, “It wasn’t an interview; it was a relationship show. It was taken out of context because when I did the show, it was three or four days after it started. It started somewhere, and I don’t know how many people have had time to sit and watch.”

He expressed surprise and shock at the overwhelming response he received following the airing of the show. “The number of people who have contacted me that they will be interested is overwhelming. We live in a very hypocritical society. DM and in town, all over. They ask me what qualities we are looking for, can you imagine? Something that I said, people have taken it seriously, and I’m even shocked.”

The actor emphasized that he is not interested in pursuing a threesome and urged the public to understand that his comments were made in a different context. “I want people to understand that it was not my intention, and I am not interested in a threesome,” he reiterated.

Epic showcase for The Gods Are Not To Blame!

We have seen a deluge of theatrical productions in Ghana for many years and we have seen such an upgrade in the productions in the last couple of years, but what we witnessed last weekend at the National Theatre, Accra, courtesy of Image Bureau and April Communication was simply a statement.

That statement was the fact that, we have the skill set to tackle any creative project. We command the resources to pull any type of production off, we have the personnel to ensure that we can produce plays of all proportions and lastly, when projected rightly, we have the people who would patronise.

The showing of The Gods Are Not To Blame was grand.

Collaboration & Personnel

We have seen George Quaye’s Image Bureau and Naa Ashorkor’s April Communication collaborate on a series of plays thus far but a collaboration with the National Theatre of Ghana was rare but worth it.

What that alliance means is that, it’s okay to go alone but to go far, you need to go together – and with a cast and crew close to 100 personnel, the involvement of the National Theatre made sense.

The Gods Are Not To Blame encompassed different elements of acting, dance, choreography, acrobatics and the use of several extras and to get all that, George and Naa had to rely on the National Theatre.

Clearly, handling a crew and cast close to 100 personnel to a point where they had to execute to near perfection comes with discipline, professionalism, dedication and zeal – and these guys delivered, under the aegis of Director, George Quaye and his assistants.

Splendid Production

The Gods Are Not To Blame play presented such an elaborate production that included some eye-pleasing effects that are not usually seen in our theatre space. The special effects, especially the burning sword were the highlights of the play but everything else, from sound to lighting to stage meshed perfectly to present an almost flawless night.

And for an auditorium that has been blighted with logistical issues, being at the same place almost felt like it had no related issues considering how fluid and seamless the play went from start to finish with all those innovative elements.

It was so because; George and Naa went out of their way to look for professionals who could provide whatever resource was needed to compliment the play.

They sought assistance from a professional to design/sketch the stage set-up, which turned out to be quite a spectacle. They also looked out for another professional who could create magic with the burning sword and it turned out to be the biggest highlight of the play.

From the commencement of the play to its completion, every technical detail worked effectively, allowing such impressive fluidity that got patrons engaged and enthralled.

Magnificent Acting

Andrew Adotey is arguably the best actor on stage in his generation and he cemented that attribute with such a stellar performance over the weekend.

With the entire play hovering around his character, it meant Andrew had so many lines to cover and boy; he nailed it effortless, a testament of his longevity and prowess on that stage.

The amalgamation of the veterans with the young bloods was such a good call. It was refreshing to see legends of the stage and big screens, David Dontoh, Fred Amugi, Mawuli Semevor and others blend beautifully with known faces such as Naa Ashorkor and the not-too-known faces of all the acts from the stables of the National Theatre.

Every actor, including the extras understood their respective assignments and delivered with such aplomb. And for the likes of Fred Amugi, regardless of their age and seeming frailty, their ability to do a 2-day and four slots of such a demanding play is commendable and assuring.

The point is; there are many veterans of the stage, who are yearning for the opportunity to get back on that stage, blend with the young ones and impart their knowledge and experience to the young generation of stage actors.

Support Is Critical

With that elaborate production seen over the weekend, it is evident that, Image Bureau and April Communications injected lots of funding and resources into this play.

The sheer production cost, plus cast and crew cost, together with every other element that goes into such a detailed play show that, one cannot execute effectively without funding.

Such productions need money; the creative space needs money!

Last weekend’s showing was an unequivocal indication that with support and funding, we can do anything and everything under this sun in terms of theatre or any other project in this creative economy.

With just one production, mouths were fed; vendors got business, service providers were sorted and quality entertainment was served.

(A Meteoric Rise in the Musical Landscape)

The project, which focuses on organised crime syndicates in Ghana, he revealed, will be shocking and gory.

He made the revelation at the Disruptionlab Network Event in Germany where he and Stephanie Busari of CNN had a discussion on the role of the undercover journalist in combating organized crime in Africa.

Speaking on his latest project, Anas Aremeyaw Anas said the documentary will be shown on BBC Africa Eye.

“The film that I have seen, which is likely to be released on the BBC in January, shocked me, and I can tell you, get ready for a shocker on the BBC Africa Eye… It will go globally, it will play on the world service, it will play on BBC Africa Eye, but even me, when I saw the film and I got to the middle, I got out and I went away because the scenes are gory, people can be evil,” he said.
