Defected NDC member to lose gov’t post

0

NDC

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Awutu Senya West Constituency Zongo Caucus Coordinator Alhaji Issah Haruna would have to forfeit his position as a member of Premix Fuel Board after reports of his defection to the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

NDC’s Constituency Chairman Simon Duodu dropped the bombshell on news and current affairs program Ghana Dadwen on Onua FM on Wednesday, confirming that a letter is being prepared for the defected Alhaji Issah Haruna for his appointment to be terminated with immediate effect.

“We will send him letter tomorrow to leave the Premix Fuel Board which he (Alhaji Haruna) is a member,”Mr Duodu said.

“The height of his greed is unimaginable. I can’t believe that a man who our Member of Parliament Hon. Hanna Tetteh and the NDC in the constituency helped and given opportunity to become somebody, will now turn against same. That is a mark of ungrateful person,” he told host Bright Kwesi Asempa.

DEFECTION

Alhaji Issah Haruna, who hitherto was the NDC Zongo Coordinator in the Awutu Senya West Constituency of the Central Region, announced his defection to the NPP, citing issues of what he described as bad treatments including being left out of crucial constituency executive meetings and issues of untruthfulness on the part of the executives in the constituency and the Member of Parliament.

Alhaji Issah Haruna said he has been neglected by the NDC and the MP, who is also the Minister of Foreign Affairs, though he individually helped to campaign for her with all his energy and resources in the run up to the 2012 elections.

Expressing his frustration about his inability to work in the constituency as the Zongo Coordinator, Alhaji Issah Haruna said: “Since my appointment, I have not had the opportunity to work. The NDC is frustrating me, and some constituency executives even say if they don’t stop me, l may rise to become Constituency Chairman which they are kicking against.”

CONSTITUENCY CHAIRMAN’S RESPONSE

Meanwhile, Mr Duodu was called on Onua FM to respond to the allegations levelled by Alhaji Haruna, he acknowledged being privy to some bit and pieces of information about the intention of his Zongo Caucus Coordinator but has not been notified officially.

Asked what he made of the reasons given by Alhaji Haruna, the chairman replied: “It was unfortunate it happened that away but there is nothing you can do about it, we are worried but he has made up his mind. We cannot talk him out of it”.

But went on to say that the party has helped Alhaji Issah Haruna greatly and it is not true that he was neglected.

Mr. Simon Duodu maintained that it was out of greed that the former Zongo Caucus Coordinator defected.

Defending his reasons, the Constituency Chairman told Bright Kwesi Asempa that the MP personally paid all expenses for the wife of Alhaji Issah Haruna to go to Hajj, not to mention how the minister is looking after his (Alhaji Issah) daughter in University and on top of that making sure that Alhaji is given a position on the Premix Fuel board in the Region.

“Asempa, how could this person say he is being treated badly if his motives behind his defection are not driven by greed and selfishness?” he wondered, noting that a letter is being prepared to serve him, dismissing him from the Premix Fuel Board since he thinks he can turn round and bite the hand that is feeding him.

“I can say he is greedy, that one no doubt, after all the party has done for him”.

ALHAJI ISSAH HARUNA’S RESPONSE

However when Alhaji Issah Haruna joined the programme, he reiterated that he was abandoned, saying it wasn’t because he could not pay his daughter’s fees but out of respect he had agreed when the MP opted to pay.

“How could I be financially resourcing the chairman and will not have money to pay my daughter’s tuition.

“During the campaign I have to rely on one Ekow Sam the owner of Wangara Hotel to feed myself and family”.

Alhaji Haruna said he has made up his mind and nothing can change him.

“I was welcomed into a family, NDC is China made but NPP is made in Japan, and they say I took money. Let me say it here and now that I will not sacrifice my religion for anything. I am a Muslim.”

ECG to blame for Komenda Sugar Factory shutdown – Spio-Garbrah

0
Komenda Sugar Factory Proto
The factory was built with funding from India’s EXIM Bank

Minister of Trade and Industry Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has absolved management of the Komenda Sugar Factory of any blame in the quick shutdown of the facility.

He said the shutdown, which will come weeks after the factory’s commissioning by President John Dramani Mahama, is due to difficulties in access to direct power from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

“Almost all industries depend on power,” the Trades Minister said, “so, if you have heard about some difficulties with the Komenda Sugar Factory, it is not about them closing down.

“It is because they have had difficulties in having access to direct power from ECG and have been using some generators and transformers which don’t give them all the power they need.

“So, it is not a fault of the factory that they have that problem.”

He was speaking at the launch of the Ecowas Industrial Summit in Accra on Wednesday, June 8.

The Ministry in a statement on Tuesday, June 7 denied reports of the shutdown of the factory, announcing that the shutdown is scheduled for the end of June, 2016 rather.

There has been controversy around the state of the factory with some political actors questioning the commissioning done on May 30 when a shutdown is imminent.

But speaking at the launch, Dr Spio-Garbrah said: “Factories are very unique because they must have consistent power”.

He insisted that the challenge is general within the power sector of the country.

Central Region Minister Kweku Ricketts-Hagan had told TV3 last week that the shutdown was to allow equipment to undergo maintenance.

British athlete freezes sperm over Zika virus fears

Zika virus

British long jumper Greg Rutherford has had his sperm frozen before competing at the Rio Olympics because of fears about the Zika virus, says his partner.

“The Zika news has caused no end of concern,” wrote Susie Verrill.

“We’ve made the decision to have Greg’s sperm frozen. It’s just another thing we don’t want to chance.”

Cyclist Tejay van Garderen and golfers Vijay Singh and Marc Leishman have already said they will not compete at the August Games because of Zika.

The mosquito-borne virus, which is linked to serious birth defects, has been declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Last week, the WHO said it would examine the risks of staging the Olympics in the Brazilian city, having rejected calls from more than 100 leading scientists to move or postpone the Games.

In an article in Standard Issue magazine, Verrill, who has a son, Milo, with Rutherford, said she will not attend.

She wrote: “We’re not ones to worry unnecessarily, but after more than 100 medical experts stressed the Games should be moved to prevent the disease from spreading, this was a huge factor in us choosing to stay put.

“We’d love to have more children and, with research in its infancy, I wouldn’t want to put myself in a situation which could have been prevented.”

Olympic champion Rutherford, who won gold at London 2012, suffered his first defeat since July 2015 at the Birmingham Diamond League on Sunday.

The Rio Games run from 5-21 August.

BECE papers to be released 45 mins before start

The exams begin on Monday, June 13

Question papers for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) will be released to the over 1,500 centers 45 minutes before start, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has said.

This is part of measures, according to GES, put in place to check leakage of the questions.

Last year’s exams supervised by the West African Examinations Council (Waec) saw mass leakages, leading to the cancellation of five papers.

According to the Director General of the Service, Jacob Kor, the tight measures have been adopted to ensure credible testing of the junior high school pupils.

“We want our children to be truthful, sincere and just in writing the examinations,” Mr Kor said on Wednesday, June 8.

The examinations are scheduled to start on Monday, June 13 and end on Friday, June 17.

Four hundred and sixty-one thousand, thirteen (461,013) candidates from 14,267 schools have registered to sit this year’s exams.

Out of the total number of candidates, 239,963 are males. Fifty-seven visually impaired have also registered.

Thorough checks, Mr Kor says, were made in the selection of the invigilators for exams. The invigilators have been warned against the use of electronic devices in exam halls.

Officials of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and Ghana Police Service have been engaged to monitor the transport of the question papers, some of which will be borne by air to the centers.

Serial winner Desailly: Euro triumph legitimized our world cup glory

0

Marcel Desailly

Former France captain Marcel Desailly opens up to Yaw Ofosu Larbi about world and European cup triumphs, the marvel of France’ current golden generation, why England can surprise at the Euros, why it is too early to hail Zidane as a coaching great and his frustration at low representation of Ghanaian talent at the highest level.

The Euros is here again and I am wondering the memories it invokes for you .

I’m happy it’s in France first of all. We’ve had a lot of issues on security. The government has said they’ll put force to protect the people either at the fanzone or at the stadium so I have happy that it will be under control. As far as the football is concerned, there are a lot of quality teams. I am for France obviously but aside France I know we might have surprises. I do believe that England will have the opportunity to show up as that kind of surprise

What was it that made you love playing at the Euros?

It was huge even though In 2000 I was already a World Champion in 1998. After the world cup, in 1999 we played well in friendlies and qualification games and in 2000 BANG!, we won the tournament through that  amazing scenario at the end where we got the extra time goal scored by Trezeguet.  It was a great feeling.

You were a world Champion in 1998 and then you won the Euros two years later. To you, what does winning tournaments like these do for a player?

It gets you high to the top of the roof of the football world. For us what was good is that, in1998 we were not the best team. A lot of people talk about being the best to win tournaments but we were not the best. Brazil, the Dutch and the Argentines were better than us so people kept saying we did not play major teams enroute to winning the World Cup. We played Saudi Arabia, Denmark and Paraguay who were not that big. The Euros gave us the opportunity to beat all the major teams. We beat Czech who were a good side then, the Portuguese, the Spaniards, the Italians so we made it finally and you’re sure of yourself now. It was really good for me. I was playing for Chelsea at the time. I was quite old already because I was 32 so it was something very important for me. As a professional soccer player, you need to win and win when you have the luck to be in a good generation. To be with a team at the correct time is huge that is why I have the freedom now that I have retired because I know I have won all the major trophies there are.

There are favourites for any tournament. I know you will mention France but can you line up other countries who you feel are strong enough to pose a threat to them at the Euros this term?

England can really be the surprise. They qualified quite easily in their group. Nobody is expecting them really and they have some young players who do not feel any pressure because they do not have any responsibility. They are not yet top class players who have heavy pressure on their shoulders so I do believe that England can surprise us. There an obvious one in Belgium as well. We are expecting them because when you look at their team, individually they have a huge squad. The problem though is that can they work as a collective unit?  I don’t think so.

France coach, Didier Deschamps was your colleague both at Marseille and in the France team. Is he the man to lead France to European glory this time?

We are coming from far. We are coming from 2010 with Domenech where we had a problem with the team. After him we had Laurent Blanc but that didn’t work out too. So for almost two generations of players that these two coaches had the opportunity to succeed but it didn’t work. We have been very unlucky. We are only expecting that withDeschamps and the new crop of players like Varane, Pogba and Griezmann who is responsible for the offensive animation in the team, it looks like they are stable players. These players are doing well but not proper leaders of their clubs yet. I hope they make it for the Euros maybe we might think that it should be like Germany in 2010. We knew that they were going to be a top team in future.

We have seen the French squad. From Hugo Lloris to Olivier Giroud. My concern is about Karim Benzema. What do you make of his exclusion from the team and how vital is losing a player of his quality for a tournament like this?

It is worrying for sure. Didier Deschamps and the President of the Federation made the decision together not to take him. There has been a lot of talk about it in the newspapers, his issues with Valbuena and they finally made the decision to exclude him from the team. During a tournament, any problem that comes, spreads and destroys the attitude in camp. I’m sure that is what they didn’t want. It’s been a hard decision. It’s also very sad to see that a top player like Benzema is not part of the Euros but we have to accept it. The two at the top have made their decision.

What do you make of the young players who are coming through for France? Martial,Coman, Griezmann.

Yes! You can add Pogba, Varane to that list. They are surrounded by some experienced ones as well. For Pogba he is now doing well. Griezmann has also done well in Spain. We want consistency in the performance because there are a lot of players who come up like this and later on you don’t see them anymore. Kingsley Coman, WOW fine player but he is not consistent in his performance. He does not give his all for 90 minutes like we hope he will. A lot of readjustments need to be done; a lot of improvement but the main thing is that the talent is there. If you take the squad that France has now and you compare to our squad at the time,(take Zidane out of the equation)and  I can tell you that the quality is much more in this squad than ours.

Talk of Zidane, you played with him and had a good relationship as well. He has just won the Champions League with Real Madrid. How good is Zinedine Zidane as a coach?

Calm down. Zidane was a great player, what he has done with Real Madrid is good but he has followed all the processes, he has all his coaching badges, he went into the academy to understudy and work on his philosophy of the game. Luckily his assistant now is good also and he had the opportunity to change things when Benitez was sacked. A bit of the luck was in the opportunity that he had and he made it. Now is when the big job is coming but presently let’s just enjoy. It is a real pleasure to see a player who is legitimate to be in this position. He has shown that he respects the coaching process and at the same time he has been clever. He has reached the maximum you can reach with a club. It’s great.

Lets dwell a bit more on coaching. France has produced quite a number of fine Black players but we do not quite see them at the top level of management. Why is that?

Claude Makelele tried with Bastia but it didn’t work out very well. We also have AntoineKombouare who is a coach. We should have more but is coaching what they really want to do? I have gone through the coaching courses and I have completed now. It is not an easy thing to do. Do they have the desire to do coaching? That is the bigquestion. We may have to encourage them a bit more.

Previously, we heard talks about you wanting to coach Ghana. Have you buried that dream?

We have been discussing this issue many many times. I feel that being able to be in Ghana and investing in Ghana, creating sport facilities and providing jobs for people is already quite a lot I am doing for my country. I have another focus for the meantime. Ghana has a coach and we are doing quite well. A lot of expectation for the African Cup of Nations so there’s no actuality on this issue.

Ghana have not been able to do quite well. I am talking about quite well in the sense that we get to the top level and somehow we do not win it. What do you think is the cause and how can we get over that barrier because it’s been over 34 years since we last won a trophy as a nation?

We have to accept that it’s sports. Many other nations have the same motivation and desire but I think that at the academy level, there’s the need for a structure. We have too many players abroad. We have the legitimate ones who could go and have that experience of the high level. For me I think we have to control the rate at which players travel outside but to do that we need a better league.  If the league is not that strong, if the infrastructure is not good enough, if we do not have sponsors that’ll help it becomes difficult and it’s not easy because we have to compete with the English premiership for interest. It has to start from the grassroots. Too many are coming up, they go abroad, they are second choices out there just because the focus and the interest is the money. I don’t think I have the secret but we will do well I believe.

Who are youfavourite Ghanaian players of all time?

This is a hard one. We’ve had some top class players but I think my top three will be Abedi, Tony Yeboah and Asamoah Gyan. Abedi is my friend, I played with him in Marseille and he has been able to prove that he can succeed in Ghana and do it on the international stage as well. Abedi is a good example of consistency at the highest level.

Who are your favorites in the current crop of players in the Black Stars?

Christian Atsu has a great ability and capacity but I wish he could at least play for his club. He has been moving around for quite some time which I do not think is too good. I believe in him, I believe in his capacity. Of course luckily we have Andre and Jordan who are quite stable in their clubs and it gives them experience of the high level. We need more good players but these guys have a lot of potential.

Monkey causes nationwide blackout in Kenya

KenGen posted an image of the offending monkey, that survived

A single monkey caused a nationwide blackout in Kenya after falling on to a crucial piece of equipment.

The monkey fell on a transformer at the Gitaru hydroelectric power station on Tuesday, electricity provider KenGen said in a statement.

The transformer then tripped, resulting in the loss of 180 megawatts of power and triggering a blackout across Kenya.

Power was restored almost four hours later and the monkey survived its adventure, KenGen said.

It has now been taken in by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

“KenGen power installations are secured by electric fencing which keeps away marauding wild animals,” the statement said.

“We regret this isolated incident and the company is looking at ways of further enhancing security at all our power plants.”

The Business Daily Africa website reported that businesses bore the brunt of Tuesday’s blackout.

Many had installed generators as a result of previous blackouts, it said.

Youth groups reject clean coal myth

youth group

The Ghana Youth Environmental Movement (GYEM), together with its key allies, has asked the country’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reject the ‘clean coal’ myth preached by proponents of coal power plant.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) and Shenzhen Energy Group are pushing to get a 700MW coal plant up and running by April 2017.

The groups, including the Ghana Youth Climate Coalition (GYCC), Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO-Ghana) and Hipsters of Nature, believe any investment in coal will rather result in devastating environmental challenges, because coal is considered a major contributor to global warming.

In a petition to commemorate World Environment Day, the Movement stated that an attempt to establish a coal plant will give the impetus to importing coal pollution into Ghana.

“Designation of a technology as a ‘clean coal’ technology does not imply that it reduces emissions to zero or near zero. For this reason, the term ‘clean coal’ is misleading,” the group said in a petition to the EPA. “No clean coal technology, sufficient to cut emissions from current generators by up to 50 per cent, is economically viable at industrial scale or expected to become viable within the next five years”.

The groups have urged the EPA and the Ministries responsible for Energy,Power Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation to put the interest of people and the environment first in all decision-making concerning the coal fired power plant project.

The coal power project is intended to contribute to addressing the power generation shortfall in Ghana to meet domestic and industrial demands.

But the Ghana Youth Environmental Movement wants Ghana to follow the global path of a transition from dirty energy to clean energy and rather invest in renewable energy to push forward the dictates of the Paris climate agreement.

“GYEM will continue to urge the EPA to be firm on its mandate and responsibility to protect the environment without compromising on the health of the people of Ghana and the integrity of our ecosystems,” it stated.

Ghanaians advised to grow sugarcane to feed Komenda Sugar Factory

0

Dr. Henry Lartey

The flagbearer of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Dr. Henry Lartey has implored Ghanaians to take advantage of the rehabilitation of the Komenda Sugar Factory and create employments for themselves.

He noted that sugarcane, a raw material needed to feed the factory, can be grown anywhere in the country.

“The people of Komenda have the comparative advantage over the Komenda Sugar Factory but everyone who can grow sugarcane should start now. It should not be left alone for inhabitants in and around Komenda”, the National Chairman of the GCPP told Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Kwame Karikari Wednesday.

He was commenting on the speculations that the factory could suffer as a result of lack of raw material.

“It should be just like cocoa where people grow everywhere in the country. Places should be made available for people to purchase them all over the country and bring them to the factory at Komenda,” Dr. Lartey explained.

The GCPP leader said “we all have to join in and move Ghana forward by creating the market for these farmers”.

He noted that “banks do not know how to fund farmers. They give the monies to them at the wrong time so they squander the money.”

He added, “when you give money to the farmers, give them capacity building, provide market for them” and they will grow the crops.

President Mahama commissioned the factory on May 30
President Mahama commissioned the factory on May 30

YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT

He said youth unemployment in the country can be solved with agriculture. “Crime is up due to unemployment and so we need to create the environment to give them jobs and the crime will reduce”.

ECG

Dr. Lartey said “we should get right Ghanaians to run ECG because Ghanaians are capable of running the company…If government wants to bring in foreigners to manage, Ghanaians should learn from them so that by 20-years that their contract would end, we should have learnt a lot from them to be able to manage it”.

ELECTION 2016

The GCPP leader said “Ghanaians should not be afraid of the Electoral Commission (EC) because EC is just the referee in the election”.

He explained that “the referee cannot cheat if you perform properly and in the same way, the EC cannot cheat in the election”.

ENERGY

Dr. Lartey suggested that “Ghana must enter into solar energy under domestication because solar is free. Where there is light, there is life. Hydro and gas are not the way to go.”

“He has to change and learn how to speak the truth and most importantly know God because that is the best for him.”

The Australian-based boxer recalls times his godfather, TB Joshua, requested to see the maverick boxer.

“I remember my prophet asked me to bring Bukom Banku to his church but he refused to go with me because of the negative things he said about him.

“I would like to tell that Bukom Banku to have the heart to follow me to the church so he can get deliverance.

“If he doesn’t do that, something will happen to him in five years from now and I’m the only one who knows that. It’s my secret”.

Maria Sharapova reveals Australian Open failed drugs test

Maria Sharapova has been banned for two years by the International Tennis Federation after failing a drugs test.

The Russian was provisionally banned in March after testing positive for meldonium at January’s Australian Open.

The heart disease drug, which 29-year-old Sharapova says she has been taking since 2006 for health issues, became a banned substance on 1 January 2016.

The five-time Grand Slam winner says she will appeal against the ban, which is backdated to 26 January 2016.

“I cannot accept an unfairly harsh two-year suspension,” she wrote on Facebook.

“With their decision of a two-year suspension, the ITF tribunal unanimously concluded that what I did was not intentional.

“The ITF asked the tribunal to suspend me for four years – the required suspension for an intentional violation – and the tribunal rejected the ITF’s position.

“I intend to stand for what I believe is right and that’s why I will fight to be back on the tennis court as soon as possible.”

The ITF said Sharapova tested positive for meldonium in an out-of competition test on 2 February, as well as following her Australian Open quarter-final defeat by Serena Williams on 26 January.

The World Anti-Doping Agency said in April that scientists were unsure how long meldonium stayed in the system, and suggested athletes who tested positive before 1 March could avoid bans, provided they had stopped taking it before 1 January.

However, Sharapova had already admitted she continued taking the substance past that date, saying she was unaware it had been added to the banned list as she knew it by another name – mildronate.

Tributes pour in across the globe for Stephen Keshie

Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah has been leading tributes to former Nigeria captain Stephen Keshi, describing him as a true legend of the African game.

Keshi, one of only two men to win the Nations Cup as player and coach passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 54 to the shock of many in the world of football.

Stephen Appiah said: “Stephen Keshi is one of the legends of the African game. He always had a good word of advice. It is a big blow because we need people like him to encourage us because of what he has done and achieved.

“Both on and off the pitch, he gave a lot to his country. You never hear negative things about him, he commanded respect and people bowed at his name.”

“We wish him a safe journey wherever he finds himself. Apart from the fact that he was professional, he was a good guy”, former Ghana goalkeeper Abubakari Damba told TV3 Sports.

“In Senegal 92 after we beat Nigeria he came into the dressing room and congratulated everyone. It was rare given the intensity of the rivalry. This is a wonderful guy that we have lost.”

Damba also praised Keshi’s achievement as a player: “He should be eulogised by everyone. This is a young man who transformed himself into not just a very good player but a leader. He won the nations cup and transited into a very good coach who won the nations cup. That is a huge thing.”

Another ex Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson said Africa has lost a true icon: “He won a lot of things as a player and coach and had a good word of advice for everyone. It is sad. I hope his family would find the strength to cope with this huge loss.”

Developer threatens to move out Osu Children’s Home

Osu Children's Home

The Gender and Social Protection Ministry is fighting a developer who has threatened to take over the land on which the Osu Children’s Home in Accra is sited.

According to a deputy sector minister, Della Sowah, it would be detrimental to the inmates if the state allows the private developer, CADS Contracts and Services Ltd, to move the orphanage from its current location.

The orphanage catering for over 150 children was established in 1949 but was moved to its present location at Labone in 1960.

Though the developer had claimed it has a signed contract in 2012 with the Employment and Labour Relations Ministry which gives it the right to redevelop the place, the Gender and Social Protection Ministry is contesting that claim.

Addressing Parliament Wednesday, Mrs. Sowah insisted that the developer has not shown appropriate documentations to prove what they are laying claim to.

Also, she said when the Department of Social Development was placed under her ministry, the handing over note never mentioned the relocation.

“I want to assure the nation that the Osu Children’s Home land would not be sold or leased to anybody, thank you,” she told Parliament.

Stressing that the Home would not be relocated, she said a meeting was arranged for the company to provide further particulars but CADS Contracts and Services Ltd failed to attend.

She said the ministry has also been in touch with the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, but there is no proof that the developer has been given the approval to relocate the orphanage.

She told the legislators that when push comes to shove, she will resort to the Attorney General’s Department and the Office of the President for solution.
