Maize

Four varieties of hybrid maize have been introduced to farmers in the Northern Region to boost maize production in the region.

The drought-resistant maize varieties, introduced by the Savanna Agriculture Research Institute(SARI) under the auspices of the Center for Scientific Research Institute(CSRI), is expected to help improve the income of rural farmers and food security.

The varieties are Kpariba-Faako, CRIS-CRI Tintim, Kunjor-Wari, and Opeaburo, and according to SARI, they affirm its vision of making agricultural research responsive to farmer needs and national development.

Director of the Savanna Agriculture Research Institute,  Dr Steven Nutsugah, said the project is in line with the policy objectives and strategies of the National Seed Plan(MOFA, 2015), which is expected to create an environment conducive for comprehensive and balanced development of the seed industry.

He expressed gratitude to AGRA for supporting the institute in maize production since 2008, as well as the promotion of the various hybrid varieties that they have produced so far, especially the latest ones.

The Project Manager,  Ms Gloria  Boakyewaa  Adu expressed optimism the new maize varieties would offer farmers value for money.

Ms Boakywaa Adu said, “we will be working with selected inputs dealers across the rural areas to ensure the availability of the foundation [hybrid maize]  seed”.

Community Connect, saving communities through 3FM

Jonny Hughes
Community Connect is hosted by award winning radio presenter, Johnny Hughes

News coverage in this country over the years has usually been to report on events, people and of course, government activities, projects, as well as what businesses are doing and its impact on the people and the economy.

The picture is however different when you have a team of dedicated professionals who have tasked themselves to be advocates for communities in what can be described as community journalism.

It is against this backdrop that 3FM brings to you Community Connect; a typical professional news coverage style that typically identifies issues– sanitation, power and water supply, planning, housing, transportation and general service provision –  in the inner parts of your community.

Hosted by award winning journalist, radio and TV personality Johnnie Hughes, Community Connect airs on 3FM 92.7 on Mondays between 5:00pm and 6:00pm. Hughes is the 2016 Pentasi ‘B’ Universal Inspirational Poet Awardee.

“The Show aims at creating a consistent buzz about issues bugging the various communities that calls for the attention of public office holders for ultimate redress. You can call us the community advocacy flag-bearers and you would not be far from the truth,” Producer of Community Connect, Gideon Sackitey said.

Community Connect has in the last six months demonstrated its tenacity to pushing central and local governments off their comfort zones to get their core duties done for the various communities for the betterment of the people.

“Fortunes vary from one community to another and it has become obvious since we started that, some public officials have left [their] community needs and provisions to the wind”, Mr Sackitey noted.

“We are finding out that in some instances, public duty bearers, such as local government officers from the local assembly level to the level of state Ministers often go to sleep or take forever to undertake normal public tasks and because they are not voted for, the views of the various communities only stop at a point.”

Kweku Adjei Nkrumah, a resident of Weija, near Pambros Salt Industry, who through Community Connect got the authorities to respond to a case of being sandwiched by two filling stations, said “I can see that you guys at 3 FM are serious and can get the authorities to act. We were to go to court to stop this. But we had no money, through your medium – Community Connect- we have got the results we needed.”

A member of the Production team, Nii Amarh Amarteifio, also notes that “Community Connect is not out to run anyone down, except to make the lives of people in small, inner communities worthwhile, before they become a statistic of some sort.

“Our aim is to bring attention to situations before they get out of hand”, he added.

Tune in to Community Connect on 3FM 92.7 on Mondays at 5:00PM as we get authorities to act on some anomaly in your neighbourhood with a local flavour stewed with your concerns in a way that gets results unlike a mere news coverage.

NPP & local stations top ‘abusive language’ poll

0

NPP flag 1The Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) has named the New Patriotic Party as the party to have used the most ‘abusive’ words in its latest research.

Some radio stations which use the local language as means of dissemination topped in the research which is the second by the MFWA aimed at checking the use of language on radio ahead of the campaign for the electioneering period.

The report, which is based on monitoring of 923 programmes on 40 radio stations for the period May 1-15, 2016, names individuals and radio presenters who used abusive language, radio stations on which such indecent expressions were recorded; and political parties whose officials, affiliates and supporters used abusive language on radio.

According to the report, a total of 69 indecent expressions were recorded on 16 out of the 40 radio stations monitored. The report cites “Unsubstantiated allegations” as the most indecent expression used by individuals, political activists and radio stations hosts/presenters in political communications on radio.

Accra-based Montie FM recorded the highest number (16) of indecent expressions mainly on its Pampaso programme. Happy FM, also based in Accra, followed with 13 indecent expressions which were mostly recorded on its Democracy programme. Oman FM in Accra and Kumasi-based Ashh FM followed with 10 indecent expressions each.

Officials, affiliates and supporters of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) topped the list of culprits with a total of 26 incidents. This was followed by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the unregistered New Labour Party (NLP) with four (4) indecent expressions each. The others are: Progressive People’s Party (PPP) – two (2), the National Democratic Party (NDP) – one (1) and the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) – one (1).

The monitoring report is the second of several to be issued by the MFWA before, during and after the 2016 elections (April – December). Under its “Issues Not Insults” campaign, the MFWA and its team of monitors are on a daily basis, monitoring and tracking indecent expressions used by politicians and activists on selected radio programmes. The campaign also involves monitoring and reporting how presenters/moderators on the selected stations handle their programmes and whether or not they allow their platforms to be used to abuse others.

The project is being implemented with funding support from OSIWA and STAR-Ghana.

TALKING DRUM: The Mayor’s flood-free assurance & discarded taxi at Sunyani Magazine

0

floods1

Before commemorating the one year anniversary of the June 3 disaster, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuye had something to say.

He spoke as confidently as a bell boy in a primary school would sound his bell announcing break time.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” started the Mayor of Accra, “I am here this morning to report officially to you that Accra is standing better than the days of June 3.”

Speaking with that cocksure pronouncement, the Mayor added, “The commitment to make sure to remove all obstacles, desilt and dredge the Korle lagoon and the Odaw river to ensure water will flow whenever it rains in Accra, will continue and continue unabated. On behalf of government to the people of Accra and, indeed, the whole nation, the people’s capital [Accra] is ever safe than before.”

Really? Accra is safe?

Indeed, one must appreciate the effort of the Mayor. When he wakes up every morning and heads to his office, I do not believe he goes there to sleep. He is definitely transforming the city as the days go by.

That notwithstanding, it is worrying to hear him tell us that we are witnesses to the fact that few days ago, when we had three to four days of severe rains, the city was able to withstand the circumstances and the aftermath of the rains.

If Nkrumah Circle and the central business district of Accra, somewhat, did not flood during the recent rains, it does not mean the whole of Accra was safe.

The celebrated travel writer, Kofi Akpabli, once wrote an article he titled “Where is Accra?” In that piece, he takes his readers through some towns within the catchment of ‘Accra’ teasing his readers with the question where exactly Accra is.

If Accra, per Dr. Vanderpuye, is Nkrumah Circle and a few other areas, then, where is his jurisdiction as a Mayor? On the day it recently rained severely, I spent over an hour in search of a flood-free road to my house.

At places such as Kaneshie, Mataheko and a host of others, people were trapped behind the floods.

On the Facebook wall of Stephen Anti, a journalist with TV3/3FM, he wrote on the floods. Permit me to share at least one of his posts with you.

“Flood Alert: ECG Mains at Dzorwulu … the entire road before [the] rail tracks is flooded. Please, drive with care. The entire stretch up to Abelemkpe Junction is flooded,” he wrote.

On the wall of another friend, Selina, she gave a word of caution to her Facebook friends as she read people postings about the floods; “#AccraRains: Take care.”

It is surprising that Accra is declared flood-free but its residents’ hair stand on end when it rains. It is true the Korle and the Odaw are being dredged, which I learnt is 48% complete. However, I do not think this gives the Mayor of Accra the reason to conclude Accra is flood-free.

“He who has a number of farms,” our elders say, “must spend time attending to all of such farms.” Therefore what is causing flood in other areas under his jurisdiction must also be catered for.

The little we have done, we make the most noise out of it, thereby, limiting us in focusing on the greater good. If a country like France still battles with flood, then as DCE Kwame Kwakye once said, “We are the who” to say our City is flood-free?

Sunyani Magazine, in the Brong Ahafo region, is one of the best places in the country to get one’s car fixed. Nonetheless, there are some vehicles that, no matter what, will not pass the fitters’ litmus test. Such hopeless vehicles eventually find a home at the Magazine.

One of such vehicles is a taxi I once saw. Walking down the Angola Junction into the Sunyani Magazine, this taxi sat on piles of cement blocks and a discarded mortar. Funny enough, at the back of the taxi was written “STILL! NO PROBLEM.”

Is it not sad that considering the state of Accra its Mayor would declare the City like the taxi at Sunyani Magazine as having no problem?

The Zulus of South Africa say a man’s beauty is judged by the number of cows he owns. Can Accra, therefore, boast of being ‘beautiful’ with the ‘cows’ of dredging the Korle and the Odaw while many other parts of the city wished it never rained?

If we would want to gladly declare Accra flood-free, we must tackle the obstacles that lead to the flooding holistically. Our drainage system must be given the necessary attention by opening up the narrow ones and reconstructing the broken. The choked gutters must be cleaned once and for all. Buildings on waterways must be brought down without fear or favor!

We pray the June 3 disaster never happens again. However, even if one person in any part of Accra dies or loses a property to yet another flood, we must see it as a dent on our image.

Residents of Accra must see rains as a blessing rather than a curse.

Today is the day. There is no tomorrow. We must do whatever is expected of us this day. An ox hide is folded to a shape one wants while it is still fresh.

Prof Delle at Lawra: Leadership is about sacrifice

0

CPP campaign Delle Greenstreet2

On Saturday, May 14, 2016 the Convention Peoples Party’s Presidential Campaign took a new twist when on leaving Wa to Nandom the team visited the prison grounds at Lawra where Kwame Nkrumah was detained upon the arrest of the Big Six following the 1948 disturbances.

The actual structure that Nkrumah was kept in was believed to have been pulled down by some aggressive civil servant who only regretted the action after he was told what the building represented. At the Prison grounds, the emotionally charged Kobina Greenstreet decried the poor state of our prisons as well as the demotivating conditions of service under which personnel of the Prisons Service operated.

Recounting the occurrences which led to the arrest and detention of Osagyefo, Prof Edmund Delle said “political struggles and the success that follow never come about without sacrifice. Osagyefo and his compatriots suffered and paid the price of imprisonment because of the path they had chosen to liberate their people from the shackles of colonialism and imperial dictatorship of dehumanization.”

Prof Delle further said “Greenstreet like Nkrumah had overcome many obstacles such as being in a wheel chair as a result of a near fatal car accident to become the Presidential Candidate of the CPP. I have survived eleven (11) crashes including one plane crash myself but I am still alive.”

He added that it was God’s own plan and purpose that they could go through all that and be alive today. “It is God who ordains leaders. The courage, bravery, wisdom and sincerity of Greenstreet only reminds me of our great leader Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”

Lawyer Greenstreet additionally in his speech said; “there is too much injustice in our society. There is too much unfairness and inconsistencies. We owe it a duty to ourselves to change the status quo.”

“The tendency where we allow culprits to get away with their crimes while the innocent suffer with some languishing in jail would be tackled head on under the “Apam Foforͻ” leadership of the CPP.” The Lawyer who wants justice for all added.

At Lawra, there was a mini rally with mainly the persons with disabilities where “Mwini Sumbo” as “Apam Foforͻ” translates in Walla and Dagaare was explained to represent the new dawn of Ghanaian politics.

The CPP Presidential hopeful cried; “do not be afraid of the wheel chair. In this world no one knows the circumstances of tomorrow. What is important is the purity of your heart and desires. What is necessary is your positive, forward looking thoughts. What is noble is your courage, sincerity, truthfulness, love for others and the willingness to serve your nation as well as the readiness to sacrifice.”

“We are not going to relent in our effort to engage the whole of Ghana. But our success would depend on your acceptance of the challenge to become an organizer and a mobilizer of people for the cause which has brought us here today.”

Incidentally, at a separate function which was held closer by for the association of hairdressers and had as the guest of honour DCE Derry who was in crutches as a result some recent health challenges, Mr Greenstreet was given an opportunity to speak.

Mr. Greenstreet, the first man in a wheel chair to dare an attempt at becoming a Presidential Candidate thus the Office to the President of the Republic lamented over the disrespect that is often shown persons with disabilities in Ghana. “From our homes and families, to our schools and hospitals or within governmental structures we are disrespected because they don’t care about us. This is our chance to prove to all and sundry that we are able despite the challenges we live with.”

He charged the group to be hopeful and press on the best way they could. Additionally he said no one would seek their interest if they failed to fight for themselves.

PRESIDENTIAL TWEETS

The Ghana Police Service in May announced it is considering a shutdown of social media in a bid to maintain law and order on November 7 when Ghana goes to the poll to elect a president and 275 parliamentary candidates.

The move has since attracted backlash from Ghanaians who have vowed to use a workaround to access their various social media platforms should the Police carry out its threat.

But considering that Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, is a social media freak, how would he be able to communicate with the people? Well, our cartoonist, Tilapia has captured that in a satirical way. Enjoy!

Fuel imports drop to $1 .9bn

0

oil

A $1.1 billion drop in the petroleum products import bill in 2015 is a clear manifestation that the high prices Ghanaians are paying for petroleum products is not justified.

Ghana imported over 3.7 million (3,708,904.815) metric tonnes of petroleum products at a cost of over $1.9 billion in 2015, compared to 3,678,049.650 metric tonnes at a cost of $3 billion ($3,045,579,675.59) in 2015.

This means that even though the country imported 30,855.l65 metric tonnes more in 2015 than in 2014, the import bill dropped by over $1.1 billion ($1.140,774,743.01) due to the drastic fall in the price of crude oil on the world market.

Data from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) revealed that Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs) accounted for 7400 of the imports while government institutions imported the remaining 26° 0.

What this means is that BDCS have injected 74% of the $1.9 billion into the Ghanaian economy.

According to the data, the $1.9 billion ($1,904,804,932.58) did not include the cost of importing 259,205,326 metric tonnes of crude oil.

Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation (BOST) and Oil Trading Companies (OTC) brought in the remaining 26% of petroleum products.

Breakdown of 2015 fuel imports

The breakdown of the various products imported is: Crude 259,205.326 metric tonnes; Diesel 1,881,350,944 metric tonnes; Petrol 1,258,761,838 metric tonnes; Liquefied Petroleum Products (LPG), ‘ 197,705.957 metric tonnes; and Aviation Turbine Kerosene (ATK) ‘ 111,880.751 metric tonnes.

The money spent on importing each petroleum product, including other related charges at the port, are Diesel $1.1 billion ($1,132,852,719.06); Petrol $857 million ($857,237,728.72); LPG $104 million ($104,647,575.48); and ATK $72 million ($72,170,769.21).

The NPA did not provide how much it cost to import 259,205.326 metric tonnes of crude last year.

Import of petroleum products is expected to spike this year following a fault on Floating Storage and Offloading vessel (FPSO) Kwame Nkrumah, forcing Tullow to cut production by 50 percent.

As a result, there will also be the need to increase import of crude oil to make up for the 50 percent drop in gas from Atuabo processing plant to fire thermal power plants to avoid rolling power cuts as well as increase the importation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

With the resumption of operations by Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), some Ghanaians have attempted to downplay the importance of BDCs in sustainable supply of petroleum products.

However, with NPA figures indicating that 74 percent of all petroleum products consumed in the country were imported by BDCs, anything that hinders their operations would result in acute shortage of petroleum products.

An amount of $800,000 that Kingsley Awuah-Darko classified as profit recently is rather fees TOR charged for processing one million barrels of crude oil belonging to Bulk Oil Storage and Transport Company Limited (BOST) under a tolling arrangement.

TOR only refines crude oil owned by BOST for a fee and finished products are handed over to BOST to sell and make profit.

Considering the financing and huge overhead costs, TOR cannot be said to be making profit when it can only process 28,000 barrels of crude oil per day out of the installed capacity of 45,000 barrels of crude oil per day due to a broken down furnace.

While commending BOST and TOR for the collaboration that has revived a national asset, who pays for trading risks, should any occur, remains the big question on the lips of many industry players.

The BDC concept was mooted sometime in 2007 by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and some key stakeholders to enable private Ghanaian investors who had the capacity to import finished petroleum products to augment the production of TOR.

Private Ghanaian investors supported the idea and have since invested heavily for the national cause.

Indeed, when the refinery was in distress and could not produce, these private BDCs came in handy to keep the Ghanaian economy going by ensuring petroleum products were available.

Apart from supporting the national economy with products, these private investors provided employment for hundreds of Ghanaian who hitherto would have been on the streets.

Under the then price-regulated market, these investors piled up debts in the form of price under-recovery and foreign exchange losses, running into millions of dollars, with the hope that the government will pay the debts incurred in their bid to support the economy and also keep their businesses running.

Stephen Keshi: Nigeria football legend dies aged 54

One of African football’s best-known figures, Stephen Keshi, has died at the age of 54, the Nigeria Football Federation has said.

A former captain of the Nigeria national team, Keshi was one of only two men to win the Africa Cup of Nations both as a player and a coach.

He also managed Togo and Mali, and his playing career included a spell for Belgian club side Anderlecht.

He is thought to have suffered a heart attack, local media reported.

As a player, Keshi was part of the Super Eagles team that won the Nations Cup in 1994 and narrowly missed out on a World Cup quarter-final place the same year.

He coached the national side over three spells, leading Nigeria to the 2013 Nations Cup title in South Africa and the last 16 at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

His contract was not renewed after the World Cup but he later returned on a match-by-match deal following the team’s failure to reach the 2015 Nations Cup finals.

He was then sacked as caretaker coach but reinstated after intervention from then Nigeria president Goodluck Jonathan. He was sacked for a final time last July.

Let’s forgive Sulley Muntari – Dept. Sports Minister urges Ghanaians

0
Sulley Muntari was one of the few senior players in the Black Stars team at the 2014 world cup
Sulley Muntari was suspended indefinitely from the Black Stars together with Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Vincent Asamoah, is urging Ghanaians to accept the apology from former Black Stars player, Sulley Ali Muntari, over his indefinite suspension from the Black Stars.

Muntari was suspended for an unprovoked physical attack on Black Stars management committee memberm, Moses Armah, at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He was suspended together with Kevin-Prince Boateng.

The midfielder in a letter to the Ghana Football Association apologised to Ghanaians for “any embarrassment that my action in Brazil brought to the Black Stars Team, the Ghana Football Association and my beloved country Ghana”

He stated he is “deeply sorry” for his action and accordingly apologised to all stakeholders who were offended by the said action that received condemnation from some Ghanaians and football critics.

Commenting on the latest move by the Saudi Arabia-based player on Onua FM Wednesday, the Deputy Minister said once Muntari has accepted his fault and accordingly apologised, Ghanaians should as well forgive him

He told host of Yen Sempa, Kwame Karikari, that the decision by Muntari is a welcomed one especially so because  “Ghana has invested in him”, adding “we will need experienced players like him to be in the Black Stars. His input will contribute to the development of sports in Ghana.

“We need everybody’s support in Ghana not in the area of sports alone, and we know the qualities of Sulley but the coach must take that decision on whether to call him back or not”.

Captaincy

Asked on whether Sulley should be given the captaincy should he be called into the Black Stars, Mr. Asamoah said “we should look at his composure as he comes back because I know he has learnt a lot that is why he came out with the apologies”.

He added: “if he is able to humble himself to a younger player who is a captain” that should be enough evidence for the whole country to know that he has indeed learnt his lessons but noted the captaincy issue will “depend on the coach”

Terkper readies 2016 supplementary budget for Parliament

Finance Minister Seth Terkper delivered this year’s budget on Friday, November 13, 2015

Minister of Finance Seth Terkper will be seeking parliamentary approval for a supplementary budget on the 2016 financial statement, a leader of the House has said.

The supplementary budget is expected to be delivered in Parliament next month. The delivery will also review the 2016 budget statement.

While settling on the 2016 financial budget for the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Majority Leader Alban Sumana Kinsford Bagbin on Tuesday, June 7 said: “I have credible information that the Minister of Finance will be coming back to this House with a supplementary budget and the GNPC should take the opportunity and make sure that it is captured in this supplementary budget for scrutiny and approval if need be”.

The 2016 budget statement and government’s financial policy was delivered on Friday, November 13 by Mr Terkper. A supplementary budget will imply that the financial year is following the same timeline as 2015’s.

This year’s supplementary budget, however, comes in a year government has resolved to spend within budget as a result of the impending general elections.

““I have assured the nation and our partners that my administration will exercise strict fiscal discipline even in this election year in order that we can transform this negative narrative of our country,” President John Mahama assured in his state-of-the-nation address earlier this year.

Minister of Trade Spio-Garbrah said the beneficiaries can make Mahama secure a 2nd term

Minister of Trade and Industry Ekwow Spio-Garbrah on Tuesday, June 7 distributed campaign T-shirts and other paraphernalia to over 30 parliamentary candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The gesture initiated by his fan club is to ensure that the parliamentary aspirants win the 2016 elections in their respective constituencies.

“They are sowing a seed which is to tell other Ghanaians in this country and in the Diaspora who want the NDC to stay in power, who want the good works of President Mahama to be continued on balance after you have weighed the good works of the current president with whatever that is being promised you by another party especially a party that has been in power before.

“Which of these two groups really have the interest of this country at heart,” he remarked at the NDC headoffice in Accra.

Among the parliamentary aspirant present were Alhaji Halidu Haruna for Ablekuma Central Constituency, Samuel Kwesi Fletcher for Gomoa West Constituency, Samuel Atta Mills for KEEA Constituency and Dickson Kyere-Duah for Berekum West Constituency.

NPP has formed ‘Civil War Planning Committee’ led by Mac Manu – Koku Anyidoho

Koku Anyidoho wants Nana Akufo-Addo to condemn Peter McManu's comments
Koku Anyidoho wants Nana Akufo-Addo to condemn Peter McManu’s comments

Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho has alleged that the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formed a Civil War Planning Committee whose duty is to formulate and design ways of throwing the country into civil war in the event the NPP lose the 2016 elections.

Koku Anyidoho’s ‘revelation’ followed comments reported to have been made by the Campaign Manager for the NPP to the effect that the party will announce the 2016 general election results.

According to the Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, “We have picked up a strong signals that the NPP is up to something, they have formed a civil war planning committee led by Peter Mac Manu and the Ashanti Regional Chairman of their party Wontumi, you see, they have shown that they don’t have faith in the state institutions, the police, the military, would they have brought assassins to this country, they don’t.”

He made this known on Onua FM’s news and current affairs Program Ghana Dadwen on Tuesday, june 7.

Mr Mac Manu speaking to a group of supporters in Takoradi in the Western Region stated that the party would defy every authority in the country including the Inspector General of Police and the Electoral Commission to declare their own election results.

Contained in an audio clip played on Ghana Dadwen by host Bright Kwesi Asempa, the former Chairman of the NPP was heard saying: “In this election, the NPP will also declare our own results,” amid shouts and cheers from party supporters.

He was also heard saying: “The IGP cannot stop us. Whether you are the Electoral Commission, whether you are a peace or security officer, whether you are a polling agent, whether you are a chief, you cannot stop NPP from declaring results.”

But Koko Anyidoho said Peter Mac Manu’s rather unfortunate outburst should not be condemned alone but must be taken seriously since there are more to it than meets the eye.

He stressed that Mr. Mac Manu may have just exposed portion of ulterior motives being hatched by the NPP since there are clear signs that they will once again be rejected by the electorates in this year’s elections to solidify the title of Nana Ado Dankwah Akufo-Addo as a serial loser.

“They know they will lose. Where is their message, since they don’t have anything to tell Ghanaians in terms of policy, all they can do is to send people like Mac Manu to plot mayhem in event they lose, but they should not try, they will be smoked out and dealt with. We believe in our law enforcement agencies unlike them who trust in assassins.”

When pushed by host of the program to go by his party’s mantra of evidence-base strategy to substantiate his allegations, Koku only said “Asempa you know me, I don’t speak just like that, I know what I’m saying. We know what is going on and they cannot get away with it”.

The Deputy General Secretary of the NDC also called on the flagbearer of the NPP to come out and condemn the statements of his campaign manager if he does not support those views or it will be taken as he (Nana Addo) believes in lawlessness.

“If the leadership, the head I mean cannot whip his members in line then we must question that leader’s quality and commitment, but I know Nana Addo will not speak on this because he is a bad leader.”

When the producer reached Mr. Peter Mac Manu for his side of the issue, he declined to speak.

“Please I am in a meeting now I cannot speak to you, I am chairing a meeting at this moment, I’m sorry, thank you, I won’t speak,” he said.

Nigeria’s Buhari ‘broke promise to end medical tourism’

0
Buhari inaug
Mr Buhari took office on a promise to tackle corruption and waste

A leading Nigerian doctor has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of reneging on a promise to end “medical tourism” by seeking treatment in the UK.

Nigerians spent $1bn (£690m) on foreign medical trips in 2013, most of which was unnecessary, said Dr Osahon Enabulele.

Nigerian politicians were mostly treated by Nigerian doctors in the UK, he added.

Mr Buhari flew to London on Monday to be treated for an ear infection.

It is unclear where the 73-year-old would be treated for what his office described as a “persistent” infection.

Dr Enabulele, vice-president of the Commonwealth Medical Association, said it was a “national shame” that Mr Buhari went to the UK for treatment when Nigeria had more than 250 ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists, as well as a National Ear Centre.

Mr Buhari should lead by example by using Nigerian doctors and facilities, and ensure government officials do not go abroad on “frivolous” medical trips, he added.

The UK had more than 3,000 Nigerian-trained doctors, and the US more than 5,000, Dr Enabule said, accusing the government of failing to address the brain drain by improving working conditions and health centres.

Mr Buhari, in a speech delivered on his behalf to the Nigeria Medical Association in April, said the government’s hard-earned cash would not be spent on treating officials overseas, especially when Nigeria had the expertise.

Nigeria is one of Africa’s biggest oil producers but most of its citizens live in poverty.

Mr Buhari took office last year on a promise to tackle corruption and waste.
