Varsity ladies borrow underwears to impress boyfriends, revealed on 3FM’s ‘Campus Rocks’

0

Campus shaddders

3FM’s Campus Rocks show last Friday turned its attention to competition amongst tertiary students but the focus was not about best grades but rather material things.

The trend of students at the various campuses competing amongst themselves in terms of material things ranging from clothing, bags and shoes to various hairstyles and even underwear has been rampant and is raising concerns about the purpose for which most of these students are in school.

Campus Rocks, which is hosted by Root Eye of Music Music fame, focused on the topic ‘Unnecessary competition amongst Tertiary students’ and had two students namely Samani from Accra Polytechnic and Diddy, a graduate  of IPMC, in the studio to shed light on the happenings on some campuses.

According to them, the wannabees on campuses spark the competition because they want people to notice them.

Some go to the extent of borrowing underwears, according to the ladies.

The guys also blamed the ladies for bringing competition amongst them because they always want people to know that their boyfriends are loud, known and most importantly the well-to-do guy on campus.

UTAG backs ban on sale of handouts in tertiary institutions

0

UTAG

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has welcomed a directive to authorities at the country’s tertiary institutions to ban the sale of handouts to students by lecturers.

The Education Minister, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman at the weekend directed lecturers of tertiary institutions to cease the sale of their handouts to students, arguing it does not help the students to research.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has since 2014 banned its lecturers from selling handouts to their students, it said discourage students from taking interest in personal research.

Commenting on the latest directive by the Education Minister, President of UTAG, Prof Kwame Osei Kwarteng said the practice “brings hardship to the parents and the students so the University Councils must take up the issue”.

Speaking on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa Monday, he said “I am against the sale of handout to the students. Teachers are facilitators so they should not sell to students”.

He explained that “it is ethically no right because student who fail to buy these handouts end up failing the papers of these lecturers”.

Prof Kwarteng added: “if lecturers want the students to be independent minded, they should tell the children to do their own research and not to produce what has been written by other authors even though they don’t pay copyright to the original owners”.

Confusion galore hits Mahama’s gov’t – Akufo-Addo observes

0

Nana Addo in Italy

The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says the unending social and economic crises Ghana finds herself in is because the Mahama-led government over the last 7 years has proven itself to be corrupt, incompetent, indecisive and confused.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, events of last week where Minister for Finance, Seth Terkper, and President John Mahama issued conflicting directives on the taxation of allowances and pensions are enough testament to how Ghana has been run to the ground by a clueless government.

“Mismanagement, corruption and incompetence have brought us to where we are today. When the word ‘incompetent’ is used to describe his government, the President gets very upset. But this week we have seen another example,” he said.

He continued, “The Finance Minister, Seth Terkper, told us that he is preparing to tax pensions and allowances. And his President, two days later, stated that they were not going to do anything like that. If this is not confusion in his government, then I don’t know what it is; and if this is not a sign of incompetence, then you would have to tell me what incompetence means.

“President says one thing, the Finance a minister says another. So who is telling us the truth? Are we going with the Finance Minister or with the President? There is complete confusion in his government.”

The NPP flagbearer made this known when he addressed a packed town hall meeting in Modena, Italy, on Saturday, June 4, 2016, on the 2nd day of his visit to that country.

Reiterating his belief that Ghana, under President Mahama, is reeling from the effects of mismanagement, Nana Akufo-Addo recounted how Ghana’s GDP growth rate slumped to 3.9% in 2015, less than half of what President Kufuor left, which was a growth rate of 8.4% without the benefit of oil revenues.

With government propagandists quick to cite “external shocks” as the reasons for Ghana’s slump, Nana Akufo-Addo stated that Cote d’Ivoire is experiencing the same ‘external shocks’ as Ghana, and, yet, it is experiencing a boom, evidenced in it being the number one investment destination on the African continent, 9% annual GDP growth rates and $12 billion in agricultural export revenues. Ghana, on the other hand, is in decline and could only garner $2 billion from her agricultural exports.

To this end, Nana Akufo-Addo urged NPP members, in and out of Ghana, to work hard to take Ghana out of this mess, and bring her back to prosperity.

“We have to change these statistics. We cannot continue, whilst other people are prospering, to go down the hill. We need to have a change in Ghana. John Mahama cannot help us,” he said.

An Akufo-Addo government, God-willing from 2017, he assured, is going to focus on expanding industry and modernizing our agriculture, adding that “these are going to be the main themes for the next four years.”

This twin-track of rapid industrial expansion and increase of agricultural productivity, he indicated, is what will generate the hundreds of thousands of jobs that the teeming masses of unemployed Ghanaian youth need.

The NPP flagbearer also reiterated his pledge to reduce electricity tariffs when he wins this year’s elections stating that “we are going to reduce electricity tariffs when we come into office. No ifs, no buts. We are going to reduce electricity tariffs so we can bring relief to our citizens and to our businesses.”

With the 2016 election being his third shot at the Presidency, he was optimistic of victory stating that “I believe that, like Buhari in Nigeria and Ouattara in Côte d’Ivoire, third time lucky is what is going to happen to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

On what remains his motivation for contesting for the Presidency, he explained that “I want, one day, in our grand children’s time, when things are going well and they are writing the history of Ghana that they will say it was in our grandparents’ time when Akufo-Addo was President that Ghana was put on the road to progress and prosperity. That is what I am fighting for.”

Present at the event were wife of the NPP flagbearer, Rebecca Akufo-Addo; NPP Italy Branch Chairman, Mr. Owusu Boateng, and branch executives; acting NPP Western Regional Chairman, Francis Ndedesiah; NPP Western Regional Secretary, Charles Bissue; NPP parliamentary candidate for Evalue Ajomoro Gwira, Catherine Afeku; NPP parliamentary candidate for Effiduase Asokore; Dr. Ayew Afriyie; Italy NPP party elder, Dr. Afrifa; and a large, enthusiastic crowd of Ghanaians resident in Italy.

His casket is seen being loaded into a hearse at Louisville International Airport

Muhammad Ali’s body has arrived in his hometown of Louisville – where he’ll be laid to rest as the city grieves the loss of its favorite son.

An airplane carrying the boxing great’s body arrived from Arizona, where he died, on Sunday afternoon ahead of a public funeral procession and service expected to draw huge crowds in honor of ‘The Greatest’ on Friday.

The private plane landed at Louisville International Airport around 4.30pm, WLKY reports. Family spokesman Bob Gunnell says Ali was accompanied by his wife, Lonnie, and other family members and friends. He says the body was taken to a local funeral home.

Police reportedly escorted the casket, which was wrapped in a black cloth bearing Arabic scripture in gold on it, from the airport to the funeral home.

The three-time heavyweight champion and outspoken civil rights activist died on Friday night at age 74 after health problems complicated by a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

‘Our hearts are literally hurting. But we are happy daddy is free now,’ one of Ali’s nine children, daughter Hana, wrote on Twitter.

The official cause of Ali’s death was septic shock due to unspecified natural causes.

Family spokesman Bob Gunnell said Ali had sought medical attention for a cough, but his condition rapidly deteriorated. He was admitted to a hospital in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale, where he had lived for several years with his wife Lonnie.

Ali’s family ultimately removed him from life support on Friday, Gunnell said.

‘We all tried to stay strong and whispered in his ear, ‘You can go now. We will be okay,” Hana Ali wrote.

In Louisville, the late boxing legend’s life was celebrated at a memorial service at the church where their father was a longtime member on Sunday.

His younger brother Rahaman Ali took center stage at the two-hour service at King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church, sitting in a front-row pew with his wife, Caroline.

During the service, assistant pastor Charles Elliott III asked the congregation to stand to honor Muhammad Ali. In his tribute, Elliott said ‘there is no great man that has done more for this city than Muhammad Ali.’

I’m sad & happy that Mohammad Ali has passed – Azumah Nelson

0

Azumah-The-Professor-Iron-Mike

Legendary Ghanaian boxing hall-of-famer Professor Azumah Nelson has said the passing away of world heavy weight champion Muhammad Ali is welcome news after the boxer suffered Parkinson’s disease for over 30 years.

Azumah Nelson in an exclusive interview with TV’s Komla Klutse, said his love for the poor and discipline earned him a successful career.

Born in January 1942 as Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr, a name shared with a 19th century slavery abolitionist, the boxer changed his name to Muhammad Ali after his conversion to Islam.

The three-time world heavyweight champion had suffered from Parkinson’s disease since 1984 – three years after he retired from the sport.

The world’s ‘Greatest Boxer’ Muhammad Ali passed away at the age of 74. Speaking to Ghana’s most successful boxer of all time, Professor Barimah Azumah Nelson said both of them had met a few times, an opportunity he’d cherish for the rest of his life.

A distraught Azumah Nelson said he saw Ali as a father and friend adding that “When I heard of his death I felt sad and at the same time I felt happy because he was sick and we were all praying that he got well but I heard that he had passed away and I said that thanks be to God.

“Most of the times we met, he cracked jokes, there were times he’d ask me to jab him and when I do he’d tell me I’m not smart.”

He had shied away from public life in recent years as a result of the Parkinson’s disease but despite this, Azumah Nelson said “he loved people, had feelings for the poor and spoke for the needy, fought for the black race and he did everything that God brought him on earth to do.”

On Thursday June 2, Ali had been admitted to a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, suffering from respiratory infection.

Reports had suggested his breathing problems had been complicated by his neurological disorder, which had long impaired his speech.

“He loved people, had feelings for the poor and spoke for the needy, fought for the black race and he did everything that God brought him on earth to do” Azumah added.

Undoubtedly, one of the most successful boxers of all time, Mohammed Ali left behind 9 children, 4 wives and several grandchildren. The world and boxing fraternity will miss a man who was outspoken and says anything both in and out of the ring.

Gov’ts poor authority shows in the environment – Rawlings fumes

0

Rawlings

Former president Jerry John Rawlings has taken a swipe at government and local authorities for looking on unconcerned as “trees are hacked down brutally’” and the environment degraded indiscriminately.

According to the former President, the level of indiscipline is getting out of hand because individuals and state institutions are unable to check and protect a basic component of human existence which is the environment.

Speaking at the 37th commemoration of the June 4 uprising memorial service in Accra, the former president said very little has been done to curb the indiscriminate “hacking down of trees over the years especially since I left office.

“Trees that were planted along the Tema motorway to Akosombo road were brutally hacked down a few months ago. Not even the traders who have decided to colonise the shoulders of our urban roads could protect these shade providing trees.”

The former president who was obviously very livid about the situation said “nothing reflects our irresponsibility and indiscipline more than the neglect of our environment. Nothing reflects the poor standard and authority of a government as the environment. The corruption of the environment is the quickest way to degrade our human self worth.

“And a government or local authority that would butcher trees or watch the degradation of its environment cannot expect people to behave responsibly in other facets of their lives.”

Why June 4, 1979
The day is being marked by the former president and his allies because on this day in 1979 he (Jerry Rawlings) was released from incarceration by other junior military officers because he had spoken against the then government and military officers over ‘corrupt practices, bad governance, lack of discipline both in the government and in the army’.

After his release, the then junior officer Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings was marched straight to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) where he made an announcement indicating that the junior officers had taken over the governance of the country.

There was mixed reaction to that announcement. Whiles others were excited to hear the news, others were in fear. Some senior military officers including General Afrifa, General F.K Akufo and Ignatius Kutu Acheampong were rounded up and executed by firing squad.

Aftermath
There was general fear and panic mixed with excitement depending on where one leaned, but from then on there was a gradually shift to the democratic dispensation Ghana is enjoying now. There were serious fallouts between Rawlings and some of his friends including Major rtd Boakye Gyan amongst others who had helped him in the early years of the coup.

Black Stars qualify for AFCON 2017 after 2-0 Mauritius win

Atsu

The Black Stars booked a 7th straight qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, June 5 when they beat their Mauritian counterparts 0-2.

With a final game against Rwanda in the qualification for Gabon 2017, the Stars needed a win away to secure qualification to Africa’s flagship tournament.

Stand-in captain Andre Ayew scored first deep into the second half before Christian Atsu doubled the lead for the 2015 finalists.

The win at the Stade Anjalay on the penultimate day of qualifiers put Ghana on top of Group H with 13 points with Rwanda, Mozambique and Mauritius, in that order, falling short of qualification.

Ghana as a result join hosts Gabon, Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Cameroon, Senegal and debutantes Guinea-Bissau as qualifiers for the 16-nation tournament, which is scheduled to be held from January 14 to February 5, 2017.

A hand-held android device will capture details

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has introduced a new billing and payment system with effect from June 1, management has announced.

The new system will be piloted in the Tema Region of the Company, according to a release, and then later scaled up to cover the entire country “upon successful implementation”.

A release on Sunday, June 5 explained that by the new system, meter readers will be capturing customer consumption data with a hand-held android device equipped with a software which already has customers’ data.

“The system will calculate customer’s water consumption and automatically send them their corresponding bill via text message (SMS) and/or e-mail,” the release said.

“Customers are therefore required to make available to GWCL, two reliable cell phone numbers each and email addresses if possible, to receive their bills,” it urged.

‘Ghana Water’ payment scratch cards

Once alerts on bills are received, customers will have to make prompt payments by purchasing ‘Ghana Water’ scratch cards from customer service points or any authorized vendor.

“Disconnection teams have been setup to disconnect ALL customers who default in paying their bills promptly,” the release warned.

It also said a GPS-monitoring system has been put in place to check all malpractices against the Company.

This new move by the utility company comes in the wake of a controversial software anomaly hitting the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

GMB winner urges education among Cape Coasters

Esi wants all stakeholders in the Central Region to pool resources together to help improve education
Esi wants all stakeholders in the Central Region to pool resources together to help improve education

Ghana’s Most Beautiful queen Esi has urged stakeholders in the Central Region to immediately introduce measures to address the dwindling standards of education in the Cape Coast metropolis.

She said as a cradle of education in the country, Cape Coast appears to be losing the accolade to social vices.

If not checked, Esi explained, the situation would have adverse effect on the future of the youth and the town as a whole in the near future.

She made this call last weekend during the launch of this year’s Oguaa Fetu Afehye themed: ‘Falling Standards of Education in the Cape Coast Metropolis – the Stakeholders’ Responsibilities’.

Full name Vera Oheneba Safoah, the beauty queen, who was a special dignitary at the event, expressed worry that Cape Coast hosts most of the renowned and best senior high schools in the country but most indigenes do not attain the required grades at the basic level to make it to these schools.

“It saddens me that we have all the best senior high schools here in Cape Coast but when you go there only a handful of Cape Coasters are found there,” she said, “meaning we are not making use of the opportunity we have here but outsiders are rather doing it.”

She lamented reports of social vices about some children in Cape Coast “which are not the best for a town which is referred to as the cradle of education,” she wailed.

Esi, who is an anti-teenage pregnancy ambassador, also expressed worry about the high incidence of teenage pregnancy, child prostitution, alcoholism and other social vices among children in Cape Coast and called on stakeholders to take measures to curb since they affect their education.

Dwelling on the theme for the launch of this year’s Fetu Festival, Esi was optimistic officials from the education directorate will institute moves for proper supervision in the various schools to check teachers and by sodoing instilling discipline in their pupils.

She appealed to parents and guardians to play responsible roles to bring up their wards well for a good future.

She also tasked the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly to have by-laws to check children who are found loitering about during school hours and, more importantly, deal with those found engaging in social vices.

Esi also called on the Oguaa Traditional Council to play its role to support other stakeholders to help save the dwindling and falling standards of education in Cape Coast.

She also used the opportunity to appeal to stakeholders to come to the aid of her Pempamsie Foundation, which is geared towards reducing teenage pregnancy and empowering the youth through mentorship, among others.

This year’s Oguaa Fetu Festival will be celebrated from August 28 to September 3 when there will be a durbar of chiefs.

Rotten state: Judiciary, security abused and misused – Rawlings fires

0
Jerry John Rawlings
Jerry John Rawlings

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has described Ghana’s status quo as nothing short of a rotten state pregnant with dishonesty and exploitation.

In a speech to mark the 37th anniversary of the June 4 uprising, Mr. Rawlings lashed out at leadership and decried the lack of neutrality and objectivity within the judiciary and the security service.

The Chairman of the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) also charged at those who pretend not to recognize what led to the bloody June 4 uprsing, describing it as a justifiable intervention and an expression of rage against corruption and the rape of the country by some political and military leaders.

PAIN AND ANGUISH

“As we mark the 37th Anniversary of June 4th, I note with pain and anguish that the poisonous and agitated environment, the attitude of leaders, the unprecedented level of dishonesty, exploitation, the abuse and misuse of the Judiciary and the Security Agencies, and the arrogance of appointed and elected Officials have returned,” President Rawlings fired.

All hope was not lost, he indicated, as he called on the nation to retrace it steps without expecting a miracle overnight devoid of the necessary action.

“It can never be too late to reverse the rot and re-embrace the ideals that took our country to the enviable levels to which we took it.

“But you and I should not sit idle and expect a miracle. Let’s speak up, let us set an example with the manner in which we comport ourselves in all aspects of our lives and let us demand even better standards from our leaders at all levels.”

June 4.jpg beta

Former President Rawlings had early on warned: “Let us not be so dishonest, so unethical, so immoral as to pretend we didn’t know what brought about 1966, what brought about 1972 and what brought about June 4 and the subsequent follow up, 31st December.

“June 4th, is therefore not about me! It is rather the collective action and expression of a people when they cry out, rise up and rightfully demand proper Governance, Accountability, Probity, Justice and Respect from those who are supposed to govern them! “

ERRANT ONE

The Founder of the NDC was critical of those who were part of the revolution but who today, hiding under the cloak of democracy prefer to label him the errant one.

“Today those who have benefited from the sweat of the people have become lords over them and feel detached from the reality of the level of deprivation at the grassroots,” he said.
