Top Hezbollah commander killed in Syria

The man believed to be Hezbollah’s most senior military commander in Syria’s war has been killed in Damascus.

Mustafa Amine Badreddine died in a large explosion near Damascus airport, the Lebanon-based militant group said in a statement on its al-Manar website.

Hezbollah supports Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad and has sent thousands of fighters into Syria.

In 2015, the US said that Badreddine was behind all Hezbollah’s military operations in Syria since 2011.

The US treasury, which imposed sanctions on Badreddine last July, said at the time he was behind the movement of Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon to Syria, and was in charge of the key battle for the town of al-Qusair in 2013.

Badreddine was also charged with leading the assassination of former Lebanese PM Rafik Hariri in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, in 2005.

The funeral for Badreddine is scheduled for Friday afternoon south of Beirut.

Death near Aleppo?

An initial report by Lebanon’s al-Mayadeen TV said that Badreddine, 55, died in an Israeli air strike. But a later statement by Hezbollah on al-Manar’s website did not mention Israel.

Israeli media reported that the government refused to comment on whether it was involved in Badreddine’s death.

Israel has been accused by Hezbollah of killing a number of its fighters in Syria since the conflict began.

The group was established in the wake of the Israeli occupation of Lebanon in the early 1980s, and has called for the “obliteration” of Israel.

A number of Twitter accounts supporting Syrian rebel groups and the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Nusra Front say Badreddine was killed in a battle in Khan Touman, southern Aleppo, rather than in Damascus.

Khan Touman was captured by a coalition of groups including al-Nusra Front last week and has been subject to heavy shelling in recent days.

No official sources have commented on the reports.

Born in 1961, Badreddine is believed to have been a senior figure in Hezbollah’s military wing. He was a cousin and brother-in-law of Imad Mughniyeh, who was the military wing’s chief until his assassination by car bomb in Damascus in 2008.

According to one report, a Hezbollah member interrogated by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), described Badreddine as “more dangerous” than Mughniyeh, who was “his teacher in terrorism”.

They are alleged to have worked together on the October 1983 bombing of the US Marine Corps barracks in Beirut that killed 241 personnel.

Badreddine is reported to have sat on Hezbollah’s Shura Council and served as an adviser to the group’s overall leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Badreddine was tried in absentia by the ongoing Special Tribunal for Lebanon, in The Hague, over the killing of Mr Hariri.

He was indicted on four charges and was said by the tribunal to be “the overall controller of the operation” to kill Mr Hariri.

Three other Hezbollah members also stand accused of their role in the assassination.

The indictment also details Badreddine’s role in bombings in Kuwait in 1983, that targeted the French and US embassies and other facilities, and killed six people.

He was sentenced to death over the attacks, but later escaped from prison.

Key questions

What is Hezbollah doing in Syria?

The Lebanese Shia Islamist movement has played a major role in helping Iran, its main military and financial backer, to prop up the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since the uprising erupted in 2011.

Thousands of Hezbollah fighters are assisting government forces on battlefields across Syria, particularly those near the Lebanese border, and hundreds are believed to have been killed.

Who could have killed Mustafa Badreddine?

Any of the armed groups seeking to overthrow Mr Assad might have sought to kill the man co-ordinating Hezbollah military activities. However, suspicion is likely to fall on Israel, which fought a war against Hezbollah in 2006.

Israel has been accused of killing several of the group’s leaders over the years, although it has never officially confirmed its involvement.

Hezbollah military chief Imad Mughniyeh was killed in a car bombing in Damascus in 2008 that US intelligence officials said last year was a joint operation by the CIA and Israel’s Mossad spy agency.

In January 2015, a suspected Israeli air strike in the Syrian Golan Heights killed six Hezbollah fighters, including Mughniyeh’s son Jihad, and an Iranian Revolutionary Guards general.

And in December, Hezbollah said one of its senior figures, Samir Qantar, was killed when missiles fired by Israeli jets struck a block of flats in Damascus.

Israel has also reportedly conducted air strikes aimed at preventing advanced weapons shipments from Iran from reaching Hezbollah via Syria.

Four KSTS students caught in occultic rituals

0

KSTSFour students of the Kumasi Senior High Technical School [KSTS] have been caught performing what is believed to be occultic rituals in an uncompleted building at Tanoso in the Ashanti Region.

The four [name withheld], aged between 15 and 17 years, were handed to the Police Wednesday where they admitted to having performed the said ritual to fortify themselves ‘physically and in athletics’

But the owner of the uncompleted building where the four juveniles were arrested holds contrary view. She told the Abuakwa Police that she suspects the four boys were contracted to perform the ritual in a bid to kill her.

She claimed she had previously found slaughtered fowls and other ritual-related materials in her uncompleted building; something she said has made her worried for her life. To her, she has no doubt the four boys are behind the said previous rituals.

Meanwhile, the four have been granted bail pending investigation into the matter, after which they would be charged for court for “unlawful entry and offensive conduct”, Supt. Joseph Nyaaba, Commander of the Abuakwa Police told TV3.

According to the Police, talisman and other materials for rituals were found on the four juveniles who the KSTS school authorities have confirmed to be first-year Day students of the school.

Confirming the arrest to TV3, Supt Nyaaba said the owner of the uncompleted building is insisting on pursuing the case as she fears some people may be behind the said rituals to get her killed.

A South African perspective on May 9th Remembered

Mr. Herbert Mensah, founder of May 9th Remembered, turned the 15th anniversary of that tragic and tearful day into an international occasion by sponsoring two family members of the 2001 Ellis Park victims to share their sorrows with those of family members in Ghana.

Mmakgomo Tshetlo who lost her dad in the Ellis Park stadium disaster was one of the visitors, and she reflected as follows on her historic visit to Ghana.

“I find myself struggling to express my innermost thoughts and emotions about the wonderful and eye opening experience of my recent visit to Accra and Kumasi in Ghana.

The news and the trip itself couldn’t have come at a better time. I’d been yearning for a break and holiday for the longest of time. Time and time again, I’d put aside some money for a trip to the beach or resort but would end up having to pick from the savings to cover up expenses here and there.

So when the news came that I would be visiting Ghana I was taken aback. Too scared to be excited, too afraid of sharing the news, in case I jinxed the whole thing (the pessimist in me thought this is all too good to be true).
On the 4th of May, after a six hour flight, I was finally in Ghana. The heat and humid weather was the first thing that greeted us as we stepped of the plan. Definitely a warm welcome.

The following day we met Mr. Herbert Mensah, the wonderful man responsible for this trip. A big man, with an even bigger heart. The day’s activities included a press conference and meeting with family members of those that perished after a game of soccer In Accra, on the 9th of May, 15 years ago.

Meeting with the families was a humbling experience. Seeing how vastly different our lives are and how we’ve each been affected by the loss of a loved one was an eye opener. I realized that despite losing my father, I am fortunate enough to have a mother who took care of me in every way possible. A mother who was selfless in her attempts to ensure I had a good education, a roof over my head and everything else in between.

The families however do have Mr. Mensah who has proven to play an important role in their lives for the past 15 years. A provider and support structure for those families. I think though the most important role he has played so far in the lives of the families, is that of a father figure. Something I don’t have. Something I haven’t had for 15 years. Something I haven’t experienced at probably the most crucial part of my life, my teenage years.

After the meet and greet, we headed off to the stadium, where the fatal disaster occurred. Mr. Mensah recalled his encounter of that dreadful. Again proving just how much of a remarkable man he is. Carrying bodies, some lifeless, from the scenes where the chaos erupted to a place of safety.

We then made our way to the front of the stadium, where a statue has been erected. The mood was rather somber. I recall seeing an older woman cry because it had been the first time she had visited the site. I also heard that there were some names omitted from the stone where the names of the deceased had been written. A prayer was said as we all stood in silence to remember those that are no longer with us.

Shortly after our visit to the stadium we made our way back to the house and prepared for our trip to Kumasi.

Kumasi is something out of this world. To this day, I struggle to find one word to best describe the city. I try not to compare it with any other place I’ve been to because I’d be doing the city an injustice. I love how different it is to anything or any other place I’ve experienced. I love the explicit contrast of buildings, between the old and new.

Friday saw us visiting the mosque, a rather strange experience. We were asked to take off our shoes prior to entering the mosque. A council of leaders was seated in a circle. I shook hands with most of them, as some of the leaders, in the words of Baleka Mbete refused to recognize me, understandably so, considering the cultural and religious practices of Islam.

After departing from the mosque, we were driven to the king’s palace. Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II is the king of Ashanti Kingdom. Being at the palace felt like I’d just walked onto a Nollywood movie set, everything looked so majestic. Pity we couldn’t take pictures with the king but meeting and getting to wish him a happy birthday was more than enough. By the way we share a star sign and our birthdays are a few days apart, so that makes him pretty cool. The day ended with us visiting the market. It felt like a place frequented by tourists, a bit too quiet for my liking but offers amazing craft sold by the locals.

We were up bright and early on Saturday morning to embark on a street walk in remembrance of May the 9th. Local rugby players, local soccer players, residents and of course family members of the loved ones in whose honour the event was held in. Although the walk was long, the energy of those who walked did not deter.

The May 9th Zongo Cup Memorial Tournament followed later in the day. The tournament was initiated and funded by Mr. Herbert Mensah, who is also the former Chairman of Asante Kotoko and current President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), as part of a series of Zongo Football Ghana tournaments played between Southern and Northern Sector teams. After a series of matches, Alhaji Israel United were crowned the winners of the tournament (and I yes, I was rooting for them to win).

What I loved about this entire experience and with the activities that took place was that at the end of the day, it was about remembering and celebrating the lives of our loved ones. Something I think we’ve never really gotten the chance to do in our own time.

My heartfelt gratitude goes out to Mr. Herbert Mensah, his team and every single person who shared in celebrating the memories of our loved and who, by welcoming us into their country and hearts, restored love and hope into my life.“

CPP’s Apam foforↄ trail hits Gonjaland

0

GreenstreetThe Convention People’s Party (CPP) has taken its Apam foforↄ (New Testament) campaign tour to Damongo, Bole and Sawla in the West Gonja part of the Northern Region.

The party’s presidential candidate, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, Chairman and Leader, Prof Edmund Delle, Campaign Strategist Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, as well as the National Organiser, Emmanuel Kwao Ogborjor were joined in the region by the Regional Steering Committee led by Alhaji Issah Zoro, the regional Chairman.

Apam foforↄ translates into Gonja as Ashem-porpor. Among the Gonjas, it also means renewal of attitude, change and redirection as well as a frank assessment of one’s life or way of doing things.

At Damongo, the team called on the Yagbon Wura Tutumba Boresa I at the Ndewura Jakpa Palace where the flagbearer noted, “we are here with clean hearts and sincere thoughts to engage with our people in the message of ‘kashiƞteng’ which is the truth as we all know in Gonjaland”.

He added that the CPP is for the progress and advancement of all Ghanaians and would therefore not claim any region to be her world bank.

The party’s proverbial world bank, he said, lies in truth, sincerity, honesty, sacrifice, hope, devotion, courage and love for all.

On his part, the Overlord of Yagbon, who spoke through his linguist, welcomed Greenstreet, who is a legal practitioner, and his entourage and thanked them for the respect and courtesy shown.

He invoked the spirits of almighty God and of the Gonja ancestry to be with the delegation wherever they go.

He recalled that the seed of CPP especially in the Northern part of Ghana was sown, watered and nurtured by Gonjas. He assured the CPP high-powered delegation that Yagbon would not forget their historical ties and lead role in the CPP.

At the lorry park in the main Damongo township, where a mini rally was held to introduce the CPP Parliamentary candidate, Mr Greenstreet bemoaned the failure of government to provide employment opportunities for the teeming unemployed youth in the area.

He further slammed government for doing little to improve agriculture in the North.

He challenged the NDC administration to let Ghanaians testify to their stewardship instead of their so-called accounting to the people tour.

“The dams are dry, we see it. Our farming capacities are missing. We are here, we want to work but there are no jobs. So what are they accounting to us?” he quizzed to a thunderous applause from the youth.

From Damongo, the entourage continued their journey to Sawla and Bole where CPP members and the general public received them in their numbers. The campaign trail is expected to hit the Upper West Region.

Anti-corruption summit

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) has commended the UK government for organizing the Anti-Corruption Summit to address major issues on corruption and how to combat it.

Programmes Manager of the Ghana Integrity Initiative, Mary Awelana Addah, told 3FM that the initiative is important in the fight against corruption in Africa and the world at large.

The summit, the first of its kind, seeks to step up global action to expose, punish and drive out corruption in all walks of life. It has brought together world leaders, business and civil society to agree on a package of practical steps to fighting the canker.

“We would want to commend the British government for initiating this process even though we’ve had other process in the past that have led to the development of various laws to combat corruption this is novel because it is bringing together leadership to think about the various effort they have put in place so far to fight corruption and to also to make commitment as to the way forward for fighting corruption”Ms Addah .

She further indicated that the fight against corruption requires leadership and political will on the part of leaders before it could be addressed.

“The fight against corruption is everybody’s responsibility but let also acknowledge that we need leadership in this fight to be able to successful. We all need to contribute our quota but when we don’t have the commitment of leadership, political will as we refer to it we cannot win this fight against corruption”

Mary Awelana also acknowledged that Ghana has made some progress towards its fight against corruption in recent years.

GHS3.6m Smarttys bus branding contract approved within 24 hours

0

Bus brandingIt has emerged that it took a record 24-hour for Ghana’s Public Procurement Authority [PPA] to grant a sole-sourcing approval contract for the 116 public buses that were controversially rebranded by Smarttys at the cost of GHS3.6 million.

Documents covering the deal which were released to Occupy Ghana per a court order, showed the Ministry of Transport on July 28, 2015 applied to the Authority to sole-source the highly criticised contract to Smarttys, and within 24 hours, approval was given in a letter signed by its Chief Executive, Samuel Sallas-Mensah.

The approval letter dated July 29,2015 stated: “after a thorough consideration of your request and the urgency attached, approval is hereby granted Ministry of Transport in accordance with Section 40(1) (b) of Act 663, to sole- source Messrs Smarttys Management and Productions Ltd to rebrand 116 buses at a total estimated cost of GHC3,649,044.75”

But this has raised eyebrows with private legal practitioner, Ace Anan Ankomah questioning the “thorough” work the Authority claim to have done on the said contract before granting the  approval for the contract to be sole-sourced.

PPA

“Had the PPA merely asked to inspect the buses, it would have discovered that the Ministry was lying and that the branding had been concluded, illegally,” he stated in a Facebook post, adding “Subsequent events have shown that the PPA, at best, did shoddy or no work; or at worst, was complicit it the plot to engage in a corrupt practice”

He wondered why the Authority with all its procurement specialists, could not conduct a market search to determine that the contract sum it approved was “grossly inflated” and “illegally” but rather State Attorneys were the ones to arrive at that conclusion.

“As if this let down of the people of Ghana was not enough, the PPA claimed, nay, BOASTED in its 24-hour miraculous turnaround letter, that its work on the matter (more like non-work) had been “THOROUGH.” That’s the most painful part

‘Sweetheart transaction’

Mr. Ankomah said although the size and length of a contract does not necessarily matter, it was scandalous and insulting to Ghanaians that the entire Smartty’s contract was just a single page, with the rest of the pages being signatures and “useless documents” just to pad the contract up.

He described the highly criticised contract as “sweetheart transaction,” which he suggested received an endorsement from the presidency.

Contract1

“Yes, almost $1m of your money was being frittered away in an illegal sweetheart transaction with the yet-undenied endorsement of the Office of the President (the same Office of the President that ordered the investigation and does not have the courage, spine or testicular fortitude to publish the AG’s report), and they didn’t even bother to get a first-year lawyer to write a half-decent contract,” he stated.

Background

It emerged December last year that the government spent an outrageous GHC3, 649, 004  from the Ghana oil funds to re-branding the 116 Metro Mass Rapid Transit buses; something that attracted hue and cry.

The Chief of Staf, Julius Debrah consequently directed the Attorney General “to review the contract and associated payment(s)”, following public backlash.

A letter dated December 17, 2015 gave the Attorney General, Marrieta Brew Appiah-Oppong, up to December 21, 2015 to submit its findings.

In her report the AG, Mrs. Appiah-Opong found that there were no cost comparisons to what was submitted by the private company, Smartty’s Management, because of the method of procurement and the procedures used.

A statement issued by Mr Debrah said “the procurement method did not also ensure value for money,” and consequently directed the AG to retrieve the GHC1.9 million being what the statement described as “excess payment made for the service rendered”.

“Independent consultations made by the Attorney General with some leading motor firms in the country confirmed that the contract would have been executed at a cheaper cost if other bids were considered and price comparisons made,” the statement said.

Meanwhile, the backlash from the public forced Transport Minister, Dzifa Attivor to resign her ministerial portfolio, and thanked the NDC government for “for the opportunity offered her to serve, first as Deputy Minister of Transport under the late President JEA Mils, and later as the substantive Minister”.

400 exploration licences sold

0

miningThe Minerals Commission of Ghana has offered 400 exploration licences to several hundreds of mining operators to prospect for gold, the chief government policymaker on natural resources has said.

The Minster of Lands and Natural Resources, Nii Osah Mills, said about 200 mining companies are involved in the exploratory operation — mainly for the country’s gold that remains untapped.

The rush for Ghana’s mineral deposits comes at a time concerns have been raised about the rate of depletion of the country’s forest reserves and river banks, as more businesses and individuals turn to gold revenue for survival despite the erratic price of the commodity on the world market.

Mr. Osah Mills said this at the inauguration of Intertek Minerals Ghana Laboratory at Tarkwa in the Western Region.

Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, is well-endowed with substantial mineral resources — with the major ones being gold, diamonds, manganese and bauxite — with gold accounting for over 90% of all mineral revenues annually over the past two decades.

According to figures from the Minerals Commission, gold production from both large and small-scale operators in Ghana has increased from 535,052 ounces in 1990 to 4,341,607 ounces in 2014.

Proceeds from gold exports at the end of 2015, according to the Bank of Ghana, amounted to US$3.2billion amid increased smuggling of the precious metal.

Mr. Osah Mills said the companies that had been awarded exploration licences until the fall in the world gold price generated a lot of various types of samples for the few assay laboratories in Ghana.

He has thus encouraged investors to establish mineral assay laboratories in the country due to the significant mineral resource deposits.

“It took the assay laboratories a long time to analyse samples given to them by the exploration companies. Some big mining companies with the financial capacity sent out their samples to other countries for assaying in order to meet their scheduled work programmes.

“However, I wish to advise that all mineral assay laboratory operations should be environmentally friendly and law-abiding” he added.

He pointed out that the effects of delays in the assaying of exploration companies’ samples include a slowdown of exploration activities; delay in the development of new mines; less jobs and reduction in the revenue generated by the mining sector.

Again, he said the long waiting period for mining companies in assaying their samples gives a field day for illegal miners to operate within the companies’ licenced concession areas, degrade land, and pollute some of the water-bodies.

“It is therefore gratifying that Intertek Minerals Limited has expanded and upgraded its facilities in order to provide quality sample preparation, gold analyses by fire assay, aqua regia and cyanide leach methodologies, carbon analyses, analytical instruments among others — the operations of Intertek Minerals Limited will reduce the long time periods that exploration companies wait before getting their samples analysed,” he said.

He entreated Interek to extend it services beyond assaying only gold to other minerals to benefit from the unknown minerals that are treated as waste material — assay laboratories in other countries are able to carry out multi-element analyses to cover 32 minerals.

“Assay laboratories in others countries are able to carry out multi-element analyses to cover 32 minerals. I wish to encourage all the exploration companies to do the same so that we can maximise the exploitation of our mineral resources; your charges for assaying will also determine the level of patronage by the mining companies,” he said.

Mr. Tyrone Cowland of Intertek Minerals said the company aims to achieve stated capacity of processing 50,000 samples at the facility per month in the near-future, which will require Intertek to employ about 200 people.

VRA’s coal plant to start April 2017

0

CoalConstruction of Volta River Authority’s proposed 700 megawatt coal plant is expected to commence in April 2017, the Authority’s tentative project timeline has shown.

The coal plant, to be sited in the coastal town of Aboano in the Ekumfi district of the Central Region, is expected to augment current generation and help the largest power producer diversify its power generation portfolio to meet the growing energy demand.

Ben A. Sackey, Manager, Environment and Social Impact-VRA said: “Based on the project timelines, we expect to start construction on April 17, 2017. But that is also dependant on getting a permit from the Environmental Protection Agency. We are working closely with EPA to ensure that all the stringent environmental requirements are met.”

The coastal town of Aboano was selected as the ideal location after initial consideration of sites in Domunli, Akwidaa and Komenda purely on technical and economic bases, Mr. Sackey noted.

The coal power project is to be undertaken by the Volta River Authority (VRA) and its Chinese partner, Shenzhen Energy Group Co. Ltd. of China (SEC).

The China-Africa Development Fund (CADFund) is to provide an about-US$1.5billion long-term loan for the construction of two 350MW coal-fired plants to meet future power demand.

This represents the first phase of developing coal plants by the largest power producer, as it seeks to strengthen the country’s base load and forestall any future shortage of power when existing plants are due for mandatory maintenance.

The plant is to be further expanded either by 4×350MW (or 2×600MW) supercritical coal-fired generating units in the future, as demand is expected to continue increasing. The project includes the construction of a coal port solely dedicated to taking delivery of imported coal.

VRA and SEC, after a successful pre-feasibility study and design of the plant, have since served scoping notice to allow individuals, groups and organisations with special interest, concerns and expert knowledge on environmental impacts to furnish the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), VRA and SEC with it.

Why coal

Current electricity demand for the country currently stands at about 2,225MW. This is growing by 10 percent per annum and is expected to hit 7,000MW by 2030.

However, constraints on fuel sources for power generation — crude oil, gas and water for hydro power generation — have necessitated the need for exploring cost-effective, reliable, and clean power sources.

Given the current gas demand of about 450Mscf per day, indigenous gas and limited supply from the West Africa Gas Pipeline are unable to meet demand. Available indigenous gas is also expected to run out by 2036.

Coal, on the other hand, is available at a cheaper cost around the world. Advancements in coal power technology have also made it possible to generate clean power from coal.

Coal supply has also been secured from Glencore Xstrata of South Africa, which has about 30.2billion tonnes of reserves. The second coal supplier is Anglo America from Columbia, which has about 6.2billion tonnes of coal reserves.

There have however been calls by various civil society organisations such as the Ghana Youth Environmental Movement (GYEM) against the establishment of a coal plant due to environmental impacts of coal recorded in other parts of the world. They contend that coal plants have negative effects on the environment.

Green Peace International contends that: “Coal burning power stations continue to speed up global warming by filling the atmosphere with vast amounts of carbon dioxide. Coal burning leads to acid rain and smog, and emits more than 60 different hazardous air pollutants such as a variety of toxic metals, organic compounds, acid gases, sulphur, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and particulate matter”.

Mitigation measures

These concerns, VRA contends, are well addressed in the design and technology of the proposed coal plant. The VRA is proposing to use the latest clean-coal technology — super critical — in its first coal-plant.

“Domestic sewage water, coal waste water and oil wastewater will be treated separately, and then reused. Only circulating cooling sea water will be drained out of the plant.  A thermal plume dispersion modelling is being undertaken to predict the permissible size of the mixing zone and the effect on sea. Effluent levels are to be monitored as part of the project monitoring plan,” Mr. Sackey said.

“We will conduct reasonable overall planning for the plant area; arrange high-noise equipment far from the area which is sensitive to noise; and reduce noise level by green-belt planting – that is planting arbor and shrubs on roadsides around the main powerhouse and nearby other sound sources as required, so as to reduce noise through the noise-reduction function of plants.

“The proposed power-plant sites are far away from the nearby villages; it is predicted that the contribution value of power-plant noise to the residential areas will be low, so power plant noise won’t disturb the local residents,” he added

Nana Konadu in love with Shatta Wale’s music

0

Konadu and Shatta WaleFormer First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has described dancehall artiste Shatta Wale’s music as one which is enchanting for the youth.

Mrs. Rawlings is known for her love for music and dancing and her sense of fashion.

The NDP flagbearer recently spoke about her love for fashion, which has been admired by many in Ghana and across the continent, and mentioned her husband, Former President Jerry John Rawlings as one of her admirers.

Nana Konadu worked with Shatta Wale’s father for some years and has known the “Kakai” hitmaker since he was a child.

Speaking exclusively to TV3, the founder of the National Democratic Party said she knew Shatta Wale since he was little and knew his father too.

“I knew him when he was a little boy and I knew his father too so when they were saying Shatta Wale Shatta Wale, I asked myself who he was but I later got to know who he was.

“His music is enchanting for the young people and I like to encourage artisans, artistes and generally any young person who is into business and I encourage them so I called him to come over and we took pictures.”

The former first lady heaped praise on all other Ghanaian artistes, saying she loves and appreciates their music just as she does for Shatta Wale’s.

“I love them all and even Shatta Wale with his wild music which is still very catchy and I like Becca and all the others too.

“I appreciate music, unless the music is not so good, then I will say I don’t like it but I appreciate any type of music whether it’s classical, hip hop or Bisa Kdei.”

GHANASS gets new dormitory weeks after fire disaster

0

GHANASSThe girls’ dormitory of Ghana Senior High School (GHANASS) in the New Juabeng Municipal Assembly of the Eastern Region has been renovated by government, a few weeks after fire gutted it.

The renovation was conducted after some weeks of audit.

The girls’ dorm was razed down by fire on March 17, a disaster that displaced some first and second year students.

Most of the affected students had to go home.

But a fully refurbished dorm was handed to the school on behalf of government by Deputy Minister of Education Alex Kyeremeh on Wednesday.

Mr Kyeremeh expressed worry about fire disasters in senior high schools, calling for audit of some of these school buildings.

“We need audit in all our buildings so that we will be able to forestall future occurrences.”

Some of the students expressed happiness about the new building.

“It is so beautiful. It wasn’t like how it was. Now we can learn with much ease,” said Pearl Korantemaa.

EC not taken decision on persons who registered with NHIS

0

The new logo is expected to be launched soonThe Electoral Commission is yet to decide on the Supreme Court order of the removal of persons who registered with NHIS cards from the voters’ register, an official has said.

The Commission is, however, studying “the ruling in some detail,” Acting Director of Public Affairs Christian Owusu Parry said on TV3’s News 360 on Thursday, May 12, upon which a final decision will be made.

The Court on Thursday, May 5 ordered the Commission to expunge names of persons who registered with National Health Insurance Scheme cards in pursuant to an earlier ruling that struck out the presentation of the cards as identification for registration.

Mr Owusu Parry insisted that the Commission will make its position officially known when it is done studying the judgement.

“We are waiting until the Commission comes out officially on what is it is going to do with NHIS registrants on the national roll.”

The validity of the 2016 register has been questioned in some quarters especially by pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance.

Claims have been made that the register is bloated and needed to be completely changed. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) demanded a new register.

But the Commission has assured that there will be a clean register for the 2016 elections.

I’ve never taken bribe before – Mahama

0

John Mahama and Peter OkwocheGhana’s President John Dramani Mahama has described the fight against corruption in Ghana as “an uphill task” but insisted that his government has made significant efforts in winning that fight.

The president was speaking in an interview with the BBC on the sidelines of the on-going Anti-Corruption Summit in London. He said because of the exposure of acts of corruption, some people are accepting the perception of corruption as a reality.

The president said “one of the things about countries like Ghana is that creating the environment where people are able to speak freely about corruption, heightens the perception of corruption. So it might be that because of the environment in which corruption is discussed, people have the perception that there is an increase in the perception of corruption.”

President John Mahama however reiterated his call that persons who have evidence of corruption or suspect corrupt acts should report to the appropriate authorities to investigate.

He however added that the appropriate state institutions would prosecute every corruption case to the letter and bring those found culpable to book.

He also called for a collective effort from all and sundry to rid the country of persons who deliberately dent the image of Ghana through corruption.

“I’ve never taken bribe before”

President John Mahama in a separate interview on Focus on Africa categorically denied ever taking a bribe.

He was asked a direct question whether or not he had taken a bribe before in his life and the president said “any human being would have encountered corruption in one way or the other. What you need to do is to put yourself in a position to resist it.

“… No I’ve not taken a bribe before.”

Be vigilant to escape NDC’s crude machinations – Sammy Awuku

0

Sammy AwukuNational Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Samuel Awuku has advised Ghanaians especially young ones to be wary of the tactics being used by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in canvassing for support.

Mr Awuku condemned the tactics as “dubious” and “fraudulent”.

In a statement released on Thursday, May 12, Sammy Awuku said the recent engagement of some students of the University of Ghana without their consent and the posting of John Mahama’s stickers on cars during the 2016 VGMA at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) are evident that the NDC has lost the confidence of Ghanaians as a result of poor performance.

“It is instructive to note that, when the National Youth Wing of the NPP on April 27, 2016 decided to embark on a national sticker campaign, it did so in broad day light with the active support and participation of the general public unlike the shameful midnight act of the NDC on May 7, 2016,” the statement said.

Find full statement below:

HALT THE SHAMEFUL ACT

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party unreservedly condemns the crude and deceitful modus operandi adopted by President Mahama and his National Democratic Congress in sending its message across to the Ghanaian electorate ahead of the November Polls.

Whiles it remains highly indisputable that President Mahama on account of his numerous failed promises would go down in history as Ghana’s most ineffective and inefficient President of the fourth Republic, we find it as rather unfortunate and very disheartening, that the self acclaimed ‘youthful’ president and his agents would out of desperation resort to total deceit and clandestine moves to market themselves in a ‘constituency’ they so much took pride in few years ago.

We all recall how few days ago, the National Democratic Congress sanctioned some of its agents to pose as officials of the Electoral Commission to recruit unsuspecting students of the University of Ghana for an advert to further its cause.

For a party in government to resort to such dubious and fraudulent moves without recourse to the concerns of the persons involved is an apparent indication that, the National Democratic Congress has lost its sense of attraction among the youth of Ghana and can therefore not be considered as an option come November 2016.

Again on 7 May, 2016, citizens who attended the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) at the Accra International Conference Centre became victims of yet another shameful conduct which was carried out by some ‘agents of darkness’ of the NDC. It is striking to note that, out of their desperation, these agents of darkness posted stickers of President John Mahama on vehicles of persons who by reason of their profession are required to be strictly non-partisan. By this shameless and irresponsible act, the NDC has set the stage for the general public to lose confidence in some institutions and personalities who are only victims of an irresponsible behaviour.

It is instructive to note that, when the National Youth Wing of the NPP on April 27, 2016 decided to embark on a national sticker campaign, it did so in broad day light with the active support and participation of the general public unlike the shameful midnight act of the NDC on May 7, 2016.

The Youth Wing of NPP is left in no doubt that the NDC out of its poor performance lacks the confidence to publicly engage the electorate, hence its covert operations.

We wish to admonish the teeming youth of our country who are eager and yearning for change to be constantly vigilant as a means of escaping NDC crude machinations.
