Omane Boamah mocks Konadu’s significance in November polls

0

The National Democratic Congress says efforts by the former first lady and flagbearer of National Democratic Party, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings to contest in the November elections would have an “insignificant” impact on the elections.

According to Communications Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah “Mrs. Rawlings would not be significant in the 2016 elections… Take it from me, she will be insignificant in the elections.”

The Communications Minister was speaking on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana program where he indicated that due to the heavy investment by President Mahama’s in infrastructure, health, education etc Ghanaians would give him the mandate for the next four years.

He further indicated that based on the “good works” of the president, Nana Konadu’s efforts at getting on the ballot paper in this year’s elections and her rhetoric’s about President Mahama’s governance style would not impact the elections in anyway.

His comments come a few days after the NDP founder chastised the management style of the President at her party’s congress. She run unopposed and was given the mandate to lead the party into the November elections.

The NDP is a breakaway from the NDC after the former first lady was not named as the running mate of late president John Mills. She broke away and formed her party but failed to make it onto the ballot paper in the 2012 elections.

Stonebwoy extols the need to uphold high morals

0

StonebwoyAward-winning Ghanaian Dancehall artiste Stonebwoy Burniton says morals go a long way to determine how far a person achieves his or her goals in life.

The young artiste, born Livingston Etse Satekla, a proud BET Award winner, has shocked many in the music industry with his rise to fame.

Speaking exclusively to TV3’s Mark Tetteh, Stonebwoy stated that advising people on their personal and individual behaviour is one he wouldn’t personally do but believes lives are based on morals.

“We all know that we all come from parents and we all come from our homes and like they say, charity begins at home.

“A lot of things that I’ve learnt and I go by are because of the upbringing that I got and how I grew up. So to advise somebody’s personal or individual behavior will be way out of my reach.

“I believe we all know good and bad morals and when one exhibits good morals we know that it goes a long way to become good news for the parents and their family. So it’s just good to be good and bad to be bad.

“No matter how big you are you can’t be bigger than God.”

Jekiti Gov’t Clinic locked up; Patients, health officials stranded

0

patientsHealth officials and patients who showed up at the Jekiti Government Clinic in the Eastern Region to seek medical attention have been left stranded as the facility is locked up.

The Clinic is said to be owing in utility bills, property rates and sanitary fees, something that prompted the owner of the building housing the facility to lock it up 4:00am Thursday.

Both patients, mostly pregnant women, and health officials have since Thursday morning not been able to gain access to the clinic as the owner of the building is insisting in taking back his building.

The landlord of the five-bedroom apartment being used for the clinic, Abusuapanin Kofi Ansah Darko explained the building was acquired for the clinic in 1972, noting it was leased for just five years yet the clinic has been at the place for 44 years now.

The building housing the Clinic

He told host of Ghana Dadwen, Bright Asempa on Onua FM that authorities of the clinic have over the years failed to keep the building in good shape, stating that it has been his responsibility all these years.

According to him, the painting of the building, tidying up the place has always been done by him without recourse to the clinic’s funds, adding the worse of it all is the fact that the clinic has refused to settle its GHC2,000-debt in electricity bills since 2000.

Abusuapanin Darko claimed he invited the District Chief Executive for Asuogyaman to a meeting at which they gave the clinic up to April to relocate considering the dilapidated nature of the building.

Consequent to that, he said the DCE ordered the authorities to relocate the clinic for the owners to take back their building but that is yet to be obeyed, hence his resolve to lock it up.

However, when contacted, the DCE denied knowledge of the development.

Attempts to get the District Health Director to respond to the claims of the owners of the building have not yielded results.

Privatisation of ECG lauded by energy expert

0

ECGAn energy expert, Ishmael Agyekumhene, has endorsed plans by government to put the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) under private concession.

For him, Ghanaians should rather be concerned with the type of terms and conditions under which government will engage the private company to run ECG.

“Concession is much better because the private company will be expected to invest money and transfer technical knowledge to Ghanaian staff of ECG,” he said on Onua FM.

Ghanaians and workers of ECG who are under the Public Utility Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress have heavily criticized government’s decision to include private companies in distribution of electricity.

But he argued that unlike the ineffective management of the Aqua Vitens Rand Limited contract that managed the Ghana Water Company, ECG’s 30 year concession is much better.

“We can make it effective if the terms of concession are beneficial to the country and are strictly monitored and adhered to by both government and the private company,” Mr Agyekumhene said.

In an effort to champion accountability and transparency, he called on government to “make the terms of contract public so ordinary Ghanaians can measure the effectiveness of the private participation in energy distribution.”

The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Robert P. Jackson, on Wednesday urged the government to speed up the processes for the private participation in ECG.

Per the second compact of the Millennium Challenge Account signed by the Government in August 2014, ECG is set to be leased to a private company for a period of 30 years, with the aim of improving ECG’s creditworthiness to enable it acquire additional generation capacity from IPPs without or with limited recourse to government guarantees.

Government will maintain ownership of ECG while it is under concession.

Close down private nursing schools if…govt told

0

NurseA group of unemployed nurses who were privately trained are asking government to close down all private nursing training schools in the country if it cannot employ them into the public sector.

The nurses have since their graduation in 2013 remained unemployed. Consistent appeals to the government and demonstrations to pressure government to employ them have also not yielded results.

The leadership accused the government of only employing nurses trained by state-run institutions leaving the private trained nurses stranded, noting “but we all write the same exams, have the same certificate and have same accreditation”

“We are therefore asking President John Dramani Mahama to close down all the private health training schools and private nursing training schools if there will be no equal job opportunities for us”.

They have also appealed to parents to stop sending their wards to private nursing schools because their efforts to push their children into the health service sector will be a waste  if the current system is not changed.

On Thursday the group was prevented from picketing at the Flagstaff House in Accra as part of a series of demonstrations to put pressure on the government to employ them. The Police say they failed to secure the necessary permits.

They told Onua News that they had taken all the necessary steps to draw the government’s attention to their plight but the government has remained adamant, as it has refused to address their concerns.

Ghana makes all criminal offences bailable

0

The decision by the highest court of the land is likely to open the floodgates for accused persons to file for bailGhana’s Supreme Court has declared all criminal offences in the country’s statute books as bailable, in a landmark decision that is set to give alleged rapists, murderers, pirates and armed robbers among others, the opportunity to be given bail by the courts.

The highest court by a five-two majority, declared  Section 97 (7) of the Criminal Procedure and Juvenile Justice Act [Act 30]  unconstitutional, and accordingly struck it out from the statutes.

Consequent to the decision, all courts that have jurisdiction to try and hear cases such as murder, rape, treason, piracy, defilement, and narcotics will from Thursday, May 5 have the jurisdiction to grant bail in those cases.

Prior to today’s decision, such cases were deemed non-bailable, except in few circumstances such as when there is unreasonable delay in the trial or when the facts of the case do not support the charges.

The law

Section 96(7)  of Act 30 (as amended) – A court shall refuse to grant bail—

(a)  in a case of treason, subversion, murder, robbery, hijacking, piracy, rape and defilement or escape from lawful custody; or [As amended by the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) Act, 2002 (Act 633), s. (7)].

(b)  where a person is being held for extradition to a foreign country.

But private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu challenged that February last year in a suit in which he prayed court to pronounce Section 96(7) of the Criminal Procedure and Juvenile Justice Act unconstitutional.

His argument was premised on the grounds that an accused person per the country’s constitution, is deemed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction hence it was unjustifiable to curtail an accused person’s freedom through remand

Thursday’s ruling is likely to open the floodgates for accused persons whose cases are being tried and languishing in remand to initiate bail applications.

Video: ‘Predator’ chases NPP’s Titus Glover

0

Indisputably, Tema East is a must watch constituency in the Greater Accra region as the country goes to the polls hopefully in November.

The incumbent Member of Parliament, Daniel Nii Kweitei Titus-Glover entered parliament in 2013 with the slimmest margin you can imagine.

The New Patriotic Party MP beat the National Democratic Congress candidate Robert Papa Nii Kempes Ofosuware by just three (3) votes: 30,075 votes against 30,072 votes.

The constituency has been a swing seat, explaining why Titus might be sitting on tenterhooks going into this year’s election.

He is being given a close mark by former mayor of Tema, Kempes Ofosuware.

The two were Bright Nana Amfoh’s guests on TV3’s +275 parliamentary debate on Thursday.

Even though they had a go at testing each other’s pulse, they managed to restrain themselves from degenerating the battle of ideas into fisticuffs.

But one thing was clear, Titus is being pursued aggressively by a “predator”, Kempes disclosed, and warned him to watch out.

Nonetheless, Titus remains resolute and resilient as he justifies why he should be given the nod again in this year’s election.

Critically watch the video and decide who gets your vote.

EC to take decision on ongoing registration at campuses

0

University of GhanaThe Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) is expected to meet on Thursday over registration of students at the various university campuses.

Campuses where centers of the limited voter registration have been mounted are said to have been inundated with potential voters.

The University of Ghana, Legon is said to be the hardest hit with one center being used for the exercise.

Other campuses are said to be without centers at all, a situation the University Students’ Association of Ghana (USAG) says is an attempt to disenfranchise about 100,000 of its members.

But speaking on TV3’s Midday Live on Thursday, May 5, the Greater Accra Region Director of the Commission Kwame Amoah said he has tabled before higher authorities the challenge at the University of Ghana.

According to him, the Commission did not anticipate such a challenge.

Mr Amoah said one center was set up in each electoral area as per its strategy and so the premier university could not be allocated more than one.

He was sure a decision could be taken as soon as close of day on Thursday, May 5.

President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Paa Qwesi Adu, who was on the live news broadcast, called for an extension of the exercise on the various campuses.

He said that is the only way that most students who have turned 18 and above can be registered.

‘Rise up to meet challenges of today’ – Nana Addo urges African youth

0

Akufo-Addo doctorate
The 2016 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has charged the current generation of African youth to help ensure that the promise of prosperity that was to have come with freedom materialises for the mass of the African peoples.

According to him, though the African continent might have achieved political liberation, and liberal democratic governments may be in place in many parts of the continent, the struggle for rapid economic development is very far from being won.

The NPP flagbearer bemoaned that fact that, whilst hundreds of millions of Asians are currently being taken out of poverty, because of successful governance, hundreds of millions of Africans, living on the world’s richest continent, continue to wallow in abject poverty as a result of poor governance.

“It is time, therefore, for the current generation to rise to meet the challenges of today. You have to help banish the disgraceful spectre of young Africans dying in the Mediterranean, seeking greener pastures in Europe” he said.
He continued, “Your generation has to ensure the fulfilment of the statement, made almost 70 years ago in 1949 to the Gold Coast Legislative Assembly by Joseph Boakye Danquah, the father of modern Ghanaian nationalism, that ‘the two things go together, economic freedom and political freedom. And we must have the two together in this very age, and in the shortest possible time’”.

Nana Akufo-Addo made this known, on Thursday, May 5, when he delivered the keynote address at the 2016 graduation ceremony and acceptance speech on the award of an Honourary Doctor of Law Degree conferred on him by the prestigious University of Fort Hare, one of the first and oldest institutions of higher learning on the African continent.

Highlighting the importance of the work of his compatriot, Kwame Nkrumah, the NPP flagbearer stressed that African unity, through the political and economic union of the continent, remains the most effective context within which to maximise the collective power of the African peoples, and achieve the continent’s full potential.

“Others have done so in America, in Europe and in Asia. We must do the same in Africa. We cannot continue to be either the pawns or the victims of history. We have a huge, unique contribution to make to the growth of world civilisation. It is time for us to step forward,” he added.

Extraordinary Experience

Nana Akufo-Addo and wifeDescribing the conferment of the doctorate degree by the University on him as an extraordinary experience, especially as it coincided with the centenary celebrations of this famed university, the NPP flagbearer indicated that he was “so proud to be part of such a seminal moment.”

Africa’s progress, he said, will be decided by the quality of, amongst others, her entrepreneurs, engineers, scientists, thinkers, researchers, industrialists, farmers, workers, professionals, artists, public servants and political leaders.

According to Akufo-Addo, the men and women who passed through the gates of Fort Hare, particularly in its early years, believed in themselves and in the African race, when all around them said they counted for nothing.

“Fort Hare created the atmosphere that challenged the status quo of the time. Fort Hare told the young people, who came to study here, that they had the same capabilities as every other young person of every colour, language or race. This is the institution that moulded the thinking and values of many of the great leaders of our continent,” he added.

With the likes of Nelson Mandela, Julius Nyerere, Desmond Tutu, Oliver Tambo and Robert Sobukwe amongst a tall list of notable alumni from the University, the NPP flagbearer stated that “the sky should be the limit for your generation, for having an education from Fort Hare. It means you agree to be judged by the exacting standards set by the predecessors. It means you can never let your guard down whenever or wherever you are. If you are aiming, for instance, to go into government, you will be measured by the Mandela standard; anything short of that will be interpreted as letting the side down.”

Nana Akufo-Addo thanked the University for the honour done him, reiterating that “I am grateful that you have accepted me into this very honourable and respectable group. I promise I will do my best all the time to keep up the standards and never let the side down.”

The occasion also saw the inauguration and investiture of the new Chancellor of the University, the highly respected statesman and diplomat, Dr. Rev. Mahkenkesi Stofile. A total of 2,845 students graduated at the ceremony.

Nana Akufo-Addo was accompanied to the ceremony by his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo; daughter, Edwina Akufo-Addo; brother, Edward Akufo-Addo; Executive Assistant, Saratu Atta; Political Assistant; Francis Asenso Boakye; Press Secretary, Eugene Arhin; NPP Director of International Relations, Charles Owiredu; and members of the Ghanaian community resident in East London.

EC ordered by Supreme Court to clean tainted voters’ register

0

The Supreme Court has called for immediate cleaning of the voters’ register to make it fit for elections in the country.

In its ruling on a case brought before it by Abu Ramadan of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Evans Nimako of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the highest court of the land stated that inasmuch as there are names of dead persons, minors and those who registered with National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards on the register, it is not credible.

It therefore urged the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to expunge those names from the register.

The Court, however, asked for an opportunity for those who registered with the NHIS cards to be re-registered with other identifications.

The Court also called on the EC to solicit views from a wider audience in carrying out the cleaning exercise.

The suit brought before the Court by Mr Ramadan and Mr Nimako sought among other reliefs “a declaration that the 2012 Voters Register which contains the names of persons who have not established qualification to be registered is inconsistent with Article 42 and 45 (a) and therefore unconstitutional, null, void and of no effect”.

Speaking to journalists after Thursday’s ruling, Mr Ramadan said they will persuade the EC to implement the ruling to the letter even if it gets to the eve of this year’s elections.
