Presidential candidate promises money in pockets

0

Rawlings parkPresidential Candidate of the Independent People’s Party (IPP) Kofi Akpaloo has promised to put money in the pockets of underprivileged Ghanaians if he wins the 2016 elections.

His promise comes in the wake of a swipe by President John Dramani Mahama that he can’t put money in pockets of Ghanaians.

In an interview during his ‘Accounting to the People’s Tour’ in the Volta Region, President Mahama said the “numerous” opportunities created by the current economy is enough for skilled Ghanaians to secure employment.

But speaking on TV3’s News 360 on Sunday, April 24, Mr Akpaloo says he can do what the president cannot do.

“I want to put money directly into people’s pockets,” he told TV3’s Godfred Tanam.

“So a child below 15 years will be paid direct benefit [of] GH¢15 every month. If you are above 18 years, we will pay you unemployment benefit.”

He also indicated that a GH¢10,000 support fund will be set up for those who want to start their own businesses.

“We also believe that we should be able to do collective investment for big capitals,” he said, explaining that taking $1 each from one million Ghanaians from across the globe can get the country $1 million.

K-Poly students chase SRC executives to account for ‘misused’ monies

0

A section of the students holding placards to sum of their grievancesStudents of the Kumasi Polytechnic are demanding accountability from Students Representative Council [SRC] executives who they have accused of mismanagement and misappropriation of funds.

They on Monday morning abandoned their lecture halls to demonstrate in a move to get the executives account for their stewardship, particularly regarding the just ended SRC Week Celebration, which the students say, was poorly organised.

According to them, the SRC leadership “is incompetent” and have been misusing monies collected as SRC dues. Each student of the school, which has a population of about 15,000, pays GHC150 as SRC dues per semester.

“They have wasted our money and misused it. We want them to make account of every single digit [money] they have used,” one of the student demonstrators who claim anonymity told TV3’s Ibrahim Abubakar.

SRC

“[The] SRC is misusing our money with their girlfriends. When we came to this school, we saw them, they wore torn chains and all those things but now they are wearing better suits. They’re going to the richest [expensive] restaurants around Kumasi; going around with ladies, spending our money,” the student alleged.

According to the group of students, the current SRC led by Frank Obeng is the worst for the institution since 1957.

The students claim their just ended SRC Week celebration was poorly organised notwithstanding the GHC25,000 budget made available to them. According to them, just a three per cent of the student population were aware and took part in the celebration which lasted three days as against the usual six days

They alleged that the executives promised to buy them assorted drinks including Guinness and Orijin but gave them  only frosty bite ice cream

Again, they claim they were told that Shatta Wale, Stonebwouy and Kwaw Kese were going to be brought to perform at the event but the executives failed to deliver on all that, noting that a limited number of T-shirts were printed which were shared among themselves.

Meanwhile, the school’s administration has intervened to resolve the issues between the students and the SRC executives. The executives are currently said to be in Tarkwa where they are attending a programme.

Yaya Toure likely to miss Real game, Kompany ‘100% fit’

0

file photoManchester City’s Ivory Coast talisman Yaya Toure is likely to miss the club’s first ever champions league semi final game because of a thigh injury.

The midfielder picked up the injury in Saturday’s 4-0 premier league win over Stoke but stayed on until the end because the club had exhausted it’s three substitutions.

There is however better news for City with captain Vincent Kompany declaring himself 100% for the massive game.

The Belgian said the players were well placed to cope with the demands that a major game like that brings about.

“There’s not a day in my life where I’m thinking these occasions are stressful or difficult,” said the 30-year-old Belgium international.

“I want this for myself – and at this level all players want this for themselves. You have to play against those players as many times as we can and try and beat those teams.”

“That’s what’s going to make history for this club. For every single player in the team, if you’re not hungry tomorrow, then you’ll never be hungry in football.”

The key stats

  • Manchester City have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in their history. They have only won one of their four home games in the knockout stages, against PSG in this season’s quarter-finals (D1 L2).
  • Manchester City have only kept one clean sheet in their 10 Champions League games against Spanish opposition – a 3-0 away win against Villarreal in November 2011.
  • Manchester City are the only team left in the semi-finals who have averaged under 50% possession in the Champions League this season (48.6%).
  • Real Madrid have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League in each of the past six seasons, the longest current run. It is also their 27th appearance in the final four of the Champions League or European Cup, more than any other team.

Youth rally support for Mahama, Vanderpuye

0

file photoMember of Parliament for Ablekuma South Constituency Fritz Baffour has predicted a one-touch victory for President John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming November 7 polls.

According to him, President Mahama’s notable achievements during his first tenure of office are evident enough for the good people of Ghana to retain him in office for the second term.

He was speaking at the official launching of an NDC youth group called ‘Organized Youth for Mahama and Oko’ (OYOMO).

OYOMO is a community-based NDC youth campaign group formed with the aim of mobilizing youth within Ablekuma South Constituency to rise up and actively campaign and galvanize support for the president and the NDC parliamentary aspirant.

The event, which took place at the Neighborhood Centre in Mamprobi, a suburb of Accra, witnessed a massive turn-up of NDC sympathizers, youth as well as some party big wigs.

Various leaders, who took turns to address the gathering, charged the youth to be united with a common goal towards effective mobilization of youth within the Ablekuma South Constituency to garner votes for President John Mahama and the NDC in a bid to retain him in office.

Leader of the group, Nii Gideon Hammond in an interview said: “The youth are the driving force whenever it comes to winning elections therefore if they are united and well mobilized to work it will surely bring about victory for the NDC party”.

He therefore entreated all youth within the constituency to as a matter of urgency join the group so as to work towards a resounding victory for the party in the November polls.

Meanwhile, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuye, NDC aspiring Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma South Constituency, in an interview expressed optimism for a one-touch winning victory due to the developmental projects undertaken by his predecessor which has positively transformed the constituency during his tenure of office.

Govt has deliberately refused us employment – nurses charge

0

file photoThe president of the Coalition of Unemployed Nurses, Adams Masawudu, has accused the government of deliberately turning deaf ears to their demands.

Speaking at a press conference to press home their demands in Accra, Adams Masawudu criticized the government for consistently denying them job and rather prioritizing strategies to win the upcoming November elections.

“It is very sad to note after a successful completion of training about two years ago, we are still here talking about employment when we had been bonded and promised employment immediately after completion. We believe it is deliberate plan by government to keep us at home and channel the resources that would have been used to pay our salaries to evidence-based electioneering campaign”.

The group has threatened to embark on demonstration at the flagstaff house on Wednesday April 25, 2016 to press home their demands.

They have also threatened to pressure the government and other stakeholders until their demands are met.

Jacob Osei Yeboah2012 independent presidential candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah has made known his intentions to contest the presidency again.

Known in the 2012 elections as JOY 2012, the engineer by profession says running again as an independent candidate will be contingent upon the outcome of talks among minor political parties.

JOY’s shot at the presidency in 2012 saw him poll 15,156 votes, representing 0.14 per cent of the total valid votes cast. He placed second-from-bottom.

The only candidate he beat was United Front Party’s Kwasi Addai Odike.

Mr Yeboah says firm discussions are ongoing to see if the minor political parties can come together as a single force.

“2012 it was the same thing. When it failed I decided to stand independent.”

Hassan Ayariga’s APC received a provisional certificate from the EC on Wednesday, February 1022

All People’s Congress (APC), a political party founded by 2012 Presidential Candidate Hassan Ayariga, is expected to be handed its final certificate of operation on Friday, April 22.

APC was provisionally certified by the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) in February, a few days after its formation.

Mr Ayariga established APC after losing the presidential primaries of the People’s National Convention (PNC) to former candidate Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama.

The maverick politician had accused PNC of giving him a raw deal in declaring the December results for Dr Mahama.

Mr Ayariga has announced that his party will target the youth of Ghana.

After securing his provisional certificate, Mr Ayariga insisted that his party is not an Nkrumahist party and will only go into an alliance with any other party that espouses Kwame Nkrumah’s ideology if APC does not win the 2016 elections.

CHRAJ to investigate a near fatal military brutality against minor

0

Christopher Bamah

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has indicated its preparedness to thoroughly and swiftly investigate alleged military brutality that has left a minor mentally unstable,  with disturbing scars all over the body and damaged internal organs.

The traumatized teenager was accused of stealing a Techno Mobile phone which elicited what many have described as callous and senseless beatings from a group of soldiers in the Northern Region.

Christopher Bamah was handcuffed to a mango tree where the soldiers took turns to torture him. The brother of the 16-year-old boy, Richard, told Joy FM the soldiers melted plastic bags until droplets of black molten heat dripped over his body, even on his private parts until he fell unconscious.

His sad ordeal lasted for not less than five hours: from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Christopher cannot walk without support, vomits blood with suspected kidney problem as he undergoes excruciating pains daily.

He is however responding to treatment at the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region.

SUE MILITARY

Human rights lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu, who has taken up the case, told Joy News he would petition CHRAJ Monday morning on behalf of the victim’s family, hoping it will “bring perpetrators to book”.

He said the petition is just one of the “number of actions in mind to take” against the military.

He is also prepared to sue the military.

CREEPING INDISCIPLINE

Early on, a Deputy Commissioner at CHRAJ, Joseph Whittal condemned the brutality and said his outfit is “ready to welcome a complaint” from the public.

He assured that the Commission will “get to the bottom” of the matter and “ make the appropriate recommendations”.

Mr. Whittal bemoaned the “creeping indiscipline in some members of the armed forces”, an institution he said used to be disciplined.

He noted with pain that even though the Commission may see a glaring human rights violation, it’s unable to commence investigation without it being triggered by a complaint. He therefore encouraged the public or victims to file complaint at CHRAJ when they feel their rights have been violated.

NO STRANGER

It has emerged that Christopher Bamah is not a stranger to the soldiers who tortured him. He had been an errand boy for the military men at the Kamina Barracks.
Meanwhile, Corporal Samson Attuahene, Collins Agyei Boamah and a third person of 6th Battalion of Infantry, who are alleged to have meted out the brutality, are in military detention, the police claimed.

Vote NPP if you want progress, prosperity – Akufo-Addo

0

NPP

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is calling on Ghanaians desirous of changing their current circumstances and are yearning for progress and prosperity in their lives to vote him into power.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, he is of the firm conviction that “Ghanaians want change in this year’s election. Ghanaians are tired of the incompetence. There are no jobs and the nation is drenched with hardships and suffering.”

The NPP leader has, therefore, called on all NPP members to get fully involved in the party’s campaign, and extended an invitation to all Ghanaians who want change to “come and join the NPP bandwagon. The elephant is big enough to carry all of us.”

He assured that victory for the NPP will be a victory for Ghana, adding that “we are not coming to line our pockets with the riches of the nation. We are coming to do a job for Ghana, so we can bring progress, prosperity, and in particular jobs for the teeming masses of unemployed Ghanaians.”

Nana Akufo-Addo made these remarks when the NPP’s recently elected parliamentary candidate for the Ablekuma West constituency, the incumbent MP, Ursula Owusu Ekuful, and a large delegation from the constituency paid a courtesy call on him at his Nima residence on Thursday, April 21.

Roni Nicol, a true-blooded NPP man

Whilst congratulating Ursula Owusu Ekuful on her victory, and describing her as a “talented MP who has a bright future” and “one of the foremost female voices in our country”, Nana Akufo-Addo also reserved special praised for Mr. Roni Nicol, the other contestant in the April 9 primary.

Mr. Nicol, who accompanied the MP to Nana Akufo-Addo’s residence, had, in the aftermath of the primary, pledged his and the unflinching backing of his supporters towards ensuring that Ursula Owusu Ekuful retained the seat for the NPP.

“Roni has shown that he is a true-blooded NPP member. He contested the primary and the votes he garnered were very substantial. After the vote, whatever he needed to do to ensure oneness prevailed in the party, he did. He needs to be commended highly. Roni is a first class example to the party of how people should behave,” he said.

He continued, “NPP always remembers those who work hard for the party. I am here as flagbearer of the party partly because of the work I did in the past. Roni, this is your first time, there is plenty of opportunity for you in the future. Be what you are – a strong party man. Give Ursula your support, make sure she is returned with an increased majority and NPP people will reward you one day. What I have seen is reassuring and I believe Ablekuma West is on the cusp of something very great.”

NPP votes will increase in Ablekuma West

Thanking Nana Akufo-Addo for his warm reception, Ursula Owusu Ekuful reassured the NPP flagbearer that “we are determined to make Ablekuma West an example for other constituencies to follow suit. We are going to work hard, and, by His Grace, with an enhanced margin. This year, we in the NPP are not interested in just parliamentary seats. We are interested in a President from the NPP for Ghana. We will do whatever it takes.”

She also disclosed that she had taken the initiative towards reconciling members of the party in her constituency who were disgruntled before, during and after the parliamentary primaries.

“I am confident that God will bless this initiative and calm every heart that is in pain. We will enter every household and talk to those who had said they were not going to vote, so they change their minds. We will make sure we bring every member on board so they vote for the NPP”, she said.

On the 36,975 votes the NPP chalked in 2012 election in the constituency, she pledged a significant increase over the 2012 figure in 2016. This, she explained, will be Ablekuma West’s contribution towards ensuring that Nana Akufo-Addo obtains the 50%+1 vote needed for victory.

“We have to win the next election. We are all mindful of that and we will do whatever it takes to ensure that victory is ours. If they are counting the constituencies that contributed to the NPP victory, Ablekuma West will be one of the foremost. We thank you for your support and encouragement over the years,” she concluded.

Achimota sch: Lunatics, land guards take over lands, students living in fear

0

file photoStudents of Achimota School are living in fear following activities of land guards and other criminals on the school premises.

The activities of these land guards and criminals have extended onto other lands which belong to the school. These school lands have been encroached upon by persons who claim they acquired the lands legally.

Passionately speaking about the frustrations about the land issues, the headmistress madam Beatrice Adom said the situation has made teaching and learning difficult.

The school authorities say worshipers and leaders of the prayer camps block access to the school adding that noise emanating from the prayer camps affect effective teaching and learning.

She said “sometimes when you go to the compound, you see the lunatics who stray onto the premises and sometimes you see them begging the students for money and we have been saying that please take the prayer camps (in the forest) away.

“We are all Christians and some of them are muslims etc but we have to do things the right way. We have to worship God in spirit and in truth not by encroaching on someone’s land.”

About 5 dead bodies have been found around the school lands just this academic year and such news creates an atmosphere of fear and panic on campus.

The school authorities are linking the increase in dead bodies around the school to the invasion from land guards, unauthorized religious activities, mentally retarded persons and squatters.

The headmistress recounted several instances where the mentally challenged have butchered non teaching staffs, teachers and two police personnel saying that some of these land guards wielding machetes attacked a police officer who had to be hospitalized for about six months.

The said police officer had been called in due to the activities of some of these land guards and was attacked severely.

She said these when the regional leadership of the Ghana Police Service visited the school on a fact finding mission to ascertain the veracity of the complaints.

The Accra regional police commander, COP Dr. George Akufo Dampare, in his response, expressed dismay over the alleged murder cases and assured the school authorities of prompt response to their concerns.

He said “we’d do whatever it takes so that together we would keep our environments safe. We can assure you that you would have something good to say about us.”

Election 2016 should be free, fair, peaceful – UK High Commissioner charges Ghana

0

Jon BenjaminThe British High Commissioner to Ghana, Jon Benjamin has underscored the need for the country to stage yet another peaceful and credible election in 2016.

“The police, judiciary, EC (Electoral Commission) and civil society organizations must ensure there is peaceful, fair, credible election where the vulnerable people, those living in the rural areas, disabled and women would have to exercise their right to vote and the UK will be very happy to work with every one that wins,” he stated.

The UK High Commissioner was speaking on Onua 95.1FM’s Yen Sempa on the 90th Official Birth Day of Queen Elizabeth II of UK which falls today.

Mr. Benjamin said, “I expect the elections to be very vibrant, hard fought and very peaceful because Ghana has a very good track record of a very peaceful and credible election so we must make sure it is peaceful”.

He added “it’s in line with this that UK is supporting the process to make it peaceful and we will support whoever Ghana elects as the President and government”.

Mr. Benjamin explained that “Ghana would increasingly be a middle income country by 2020 and as such can cater for its election itself and so the UK is helping the country to improve economically that is why we are giving electoral assistance”.

On the President’s Accounting to the People Tour, he pointed out that “the [UK] Prime Minister does the same and the Queen does it”.

He added that “during election time and democratic country, it is normal for President to show what he has done and it is normal for the opposition to criticize”.

He said “many of the things happening in Ghana’s democracy is part of the dynamics in democracy and government should account to the people”.

The graduates displayed fantastic cultural skills with wonderful presentation of inspirational quotes among others, for which parents and invited guests could not help but give the kids a standing ovation at the end of the show.

Earlier students aged between 2 to 5 years dressed in fancy apparel and colourful costumes, showcased their creativity through multicultural dance performances witnessed by parents, school authorities and other guests in attendance.

The kids displayed complex moves of Ghanaian song “Ghana Nyigba” among other international rhythms to the admiration of the audience who attended the event held on the school premises.

A ‘Magic Dance’ performed by Preps students and inspirational quotes were followed by a formal ceremony, where the students received scrolls and their diplomas.

Speaking at the ceremony Mr. Mukesh Thakwani, Director of the school, said education is the most effective vehicle for change to a better world.

Inspired by this he indicated that DPS International Ghana has since 2010 trained all manner of students regardless of race, colour or faith, and that this is the core pillar upon which the school will continue in its service to humanity.

According to him, management of the school will continue investing in the school and creating more programmes to unearth talents in the students.

The Director advised parents to collaborate with the school to help develop their children.

“Parents’ little contribution will help the students and the school make a difference and the children achieve their goals,”he said.

He further added that parents should continue to encourage their wards to participate in numerous programmes organised by the school.

Mr. Thakwani pointed out that at DPS International, students of all cultures are taught universal values and ethics along with modern sciences.

According to him, teachers at the school focus on individual differences because each individual is in a different world.

In a welcome address, the Principal of DPS International Ghana, Mr. David Raj said teachers of the school are trained in contemporary techniques to help pupils realise their academic and extracurricular potentials.

He stated that the advanced teaching methodology and excellent guidance provided by a highly qualified and dedicated staff is instrumental in creating a stimulating and competitive environment for tutoring the children to become all-rounders.

Parents who shared their thoughts about the program were impressed about the use of extracurricular activities to teach students important values in life.

Recently, Ms. Inhere Baek, a student from DPS International, Ghana emerged the second runner-up in the last American Mathematics Competition (AMC) organised by the Mathematics Association of America (MAA).

MoE to takeover training of nurses, health personnel – Mahama discloses

0

file photoPresident John Mahama has endorsed what he described as a “major proposal” where the Ministry of Education would supervise all nursing and health training institutions in the country.

Hitherto, such institutions have been under the purview of the Ministry of Health.

However with the worrying spate of unemployed nurses and other health personnel – most of whom are churned out by unaccredited institutions – it has become necessary that such training institutions are moved under the Education Ministry.

The decision is currently being considered at the cabinet level, President John Mahama told Ho-based Volta Star Radio on Thursday. The President is in the Volta Region as part of his “Accounting to the People Tour”.

“There is one worrying phenomenon that I think we should take note of. There are few nursing training schools, privately established, that do not have accreditation from the National Accreditation Board and yet they are turning out nurses, and that is a worry.”

Earlier this year some privately trained nurses were angered by the president’s directive to health institutions to first employ nurses trained by the state before considering others.

In a subtle reference to that, President Mahama explained that state trained nurses are bonded because their education was subsidized by government, “so our first obligation is to bonded nurses”.

“Like I said private training institutions that are turning out nurses, some of them are accredited, yes that is true, but others are not accredited but they are coming out and saying we are nurses we are unemployed.

“That needs to be streamlined that is because nursing training is still under the Ministry of Health. I think that we must move all training institutions under Ministry of Education and if that is done, then the Ministry of Education is better able to supervise accreditation of these institutions.”
