0

Former Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah says he is open to the idea of working in Ghana again after spending two years in Sudan.

Appiah insist he is thoroughly enjoying his spell as Al Khartoum coach as he looks to build a side that will break the Al Hilal, Al Merreikh duopoly in the league.

But he is also aware coaching evolves and keeping his options open. He said :”you never know, in our line of work there is nothing like I will not do this again.

It’s always important to make yourself open and allow God to lead you and as to whether you will coach here or there depends on the day, the people around and whether you are prepared to work with them at any particular time.

It also depends on the available package. There are so many factors that will influence the call you make in that regard.”

Working with the Black Stars exposed Appiah to an income level that no Ghanaian side is capable of marching but Appiah admits Sudan has been good in financial terms

“Personally I will say it’s much better than here, for me where I am is even better than when I was with the Black Stars.”

The Ghana international has talked up his club’s chances as they chase a first victory in 14 games against the Hammers on Saturday

Aston Villa striker Jordan Ayew is looking forward to propel his side to victory as they host West Ham in the English Premier League on Boxing Day, claiming that the club have been on an improvement curve.

The Claret and Blue Army boast of one victory in their past 13 games in all competitions, and currently sit at the bottom of the Premier League log with seven points.

“I think we’re getting better and better,” Ayew told AV TV. “We are aiming for three points in the next game now. Then we will start again in the next match.

“I think we’ve been working hard all season – showing that fighting spirit – but the luck hasn’t been on our side.

“Now, things are changing bit by bit. We have to keep on this direction and hopefully, this coming weekend will be a very nice present for our supporters and the club.

“It’s West Ham now and we will keep on fighting and look to win the game. We all want to have a very good evening.”

Ayew again spoke on his stunning curling effort that earned Villa a point in a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United on Saturday.

He said: “I try that in training – looking to bend the ball from that angle.

“Thankfully this time, I did it well and got a bit of luck and the ball found the net.

“It was a very important goal for the club, the supporters and the confidence of the team.”

Ayew has four league goals to his name since joining Villa in the summer from French club Lorient.

Afoko wishes Ghanaians, NPP well at Xmas

0

The suspended National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Paul Awentami Afoko, has wished members of the NPP and Ghanaians in general a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year in advance and prayed for God’s blessings for everyone.

He has also called on Ghanaians, especially the entire membership of the NPP, not to lose hope.

In line with this, he urged members of the party and Ghanaians to use the Yuletide to do a self-introspection with the view to reforming ‘’our conduct for the good of the party and country.”

In a Christmas and New Year goodwill statement, Mr Afoko expressed his gratitude to Ghanaians, especially NPP members, who had had to endure pain and disappointment at what was happening within the NPP.

He said the last few months of the year had seen the NPP in very difficult times but “genuine peace and unity will be the result of justice and respect for the NPP Constitution”.

‘’Nevertheless, now that Christmas is with us once again, I wish to entreat members of our party to endeavour always to cherish democratic principles of rule of law, respect for each other’s opinion, love, unity, truthfulness and the abhorrence of corrupt practices, which the party prides itself on ,’’ he said.

Sadly, Mr Afoko noted, in the last five months or so, these beautiful principles which have held the party together and attracted many to its fold had not been adhered to but had been replaced by the unattractive principles of nepotism, intimidation, intra-party culture of silence, encouragement of corrupt practices and egregious breaches of the party’s constitution, which has left genuine party members in despair.

He said dissenting and opposing views of issues within a political party did not necessarily mean that persons with such opinions lacked loyalty to their party. “This new behaviour of our party does not resonate with our party members and is also driving potential members and sympathisers away,” he added.

“The great Dr K. A. Busia of blessed memory reminded us that, ‘The real test of a democracy is not just the right of a minority to disagree, but the right of an individual to disagree with the majority and still feel secure,’ ” he stated.

Mr Afoko gave an assurance that the root of these injustices and other negative practices within the party were being tackled at the appropriate forum and said it was his expectation that the law courts would help restore sanity to the manner in which the NPP conducts its affairs.

Ayariga’s move to form new party a failed mission – PNC

0

The People’s National Convention (PNC) has described as an “already failed mission” attempts by some members – particularly defeated flagbearer aspirant Hassan Ayariga – to form a new party.

Reports were rife on Monday morning that Mr Ayariga, who had led a failed contest of the party in the 2012 elections, is luring party executives with cars and motorbikes in a resolve to form a new party following his defeat to Dr Edward Mahama at the party’s congress in Wa, Upper East Region.

But a statement issued by the party on Monday said those “renegade” members should be resisted.

“We also want to use this medium to commend the exceptionally high commitment and love demonstrated by members of our beloved party in rejecting in the clearest terms possible, the shameless invitations that have been extended to them by those embarking on this already failed mission of forming a new party.”

Find below the statement:

PRESS RELEASE

It has come to the notice of the leadership of the party that, some individuals including certain renegade members of the party are going round the constituencies asking our executives to endorse forms meant for the formation of a new political party. Leadership therefore by this release, wishes to inform all members of the party that such visits should not be countenanced nor tolerated. Indeed, those individuals making these moves must be resisted.

We further like to state that, any member who signs any such documents is by that act, forfeiting his membership of our great party. And those who were hoodwinked or lied to, that such an exercise was with the party’s sanction must as a matter of urgency, write or cause to be written a disclaimer to the Electoral Commission in the person’s District.

We also like to inform all members that, such unscrupulous characters should not be afforded support of any kind. No member is to be seen accommodating or assisting them in any shape or form. Any member who fails to heed this instruction will be duly sanctioned by the party.

As for those undertaking this fraudulent exercise, we are warning them to stop harassing our members and look for their own people to found whatever entity they have set out to form. Ghana is a free country and everybody is entitled to form any association or group of his choosing, but that does not entitle anyone to predate on members of our party. We will not accept it and we will not allow it.

Meanwhile, we will like to use this opportunity to reassure our committed and hard working members that, the new leadership is poised now more than ever, to make the People’s National Convention a more formidable and electable alternative that Ghanaians have hankered for so long. We want to urge the rank and file of our great party not to be distracted in any way by this ignominious move, but apply themselves fully to the task ahead. This task seeks to offer Ghanaians as the Presidential Candidate has mentioned; New Beginnings, New Deal , New Force.

We also want to use this medium to commend the exceptionally high commitment and love demonstrated by members of our beloved party in rejecting in the clearest terms possible, the shameless invitations that have been extended to them by those embarking on this already failed mission of forming a new party.

Finally, we want to inform members of our party and all Ghanaians that, the flag bearer together with the national executive, will soon embark on a nation-wide thank-you tour to set the stage for next year’s campaign.

We have a great party, together we shall make it better!

God Bless Us All

She made the call at a brief ceremony whilst presenting assorted items to 132 widows and the aged at the Nungua Traditional Authority Hall in Accra.

The items donated included 20 mini bags of rice, 10 crates of soft drinks, 10 boxes filled with 2 litres of bottled cooking oil.

According to Naa Adjokor Mobonalor III, the donation was aimed at putting smiles on the faces of the aged and the widows during this yuletide season.

“It’s just a token from us meant to brighten the faces of these unfortunate ones during this Christmas season,” she said.

Describing them as vulnerable who had no hope in the society, she added, “it behoves on all of us to put smiles on their faces at all times especially during this yuletide season”.

7,000 nurses, midwives threaten to strike over unpaid salaries

0

About 7,000 nurses and midwives who have not been paid their full salaries and other benefits in the last three years have threatened to embark on an indefinite strike if government fails to settle all arrears by January 31, 2016.

The nurses and midwives who form the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives, say efforts to get the government to pay them all their outstanding salaries and benefits have not yielded any results

A statement issued Wednesday by the group said they have remained calm and rendered their services all these years due to discussions, promises and reassurances from the government, but was surprised to hear a claim from the government that all their arrears have been paid.

The group described the said claim as “a hoax which makes us doubt if the current system is not endorsing double standards with respect to justice administration”.

The Coalition said its members who have been paid are “not more than thirty percent” and that “most of them were not paid fully”.

“We are convinced enough that the government has not addressed our salaries and arrears issues with the necessary attention,” they stated.

The coalition said it has been left with no better alternative than to strike “if every single dime is not paid to our bank accounts by January 31st 2016”.

BNI, EOCO called upon to arrest Transport Minister, Smartty’s boss over MMT rebranding deal

0

A group calling itself Taxpayers League Ghana is pressing upon the country’s security agencies to pick up persons complicit in the GH¢3.6 million rebranding of 116 metro mass transit buses.

The public outcry over the deal has resulted in the resignation of the Minister of Transport, Dzifa Aku Attivor.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who directed a review into the deal, has also charged the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, to recover GH¢1.9 million from Messrs Smartty’s Management Limited as “excess payment made for the services rendered”.

But Taxpayers League Ghana in a statement issued on Thursday, December 24 said: “Since government has accepted that there was a wrong doing, the Minister must face the music and cough the taxpayers’ money back.”

It is, therefore, demanding an immediate arrest of not only Mrs Attivor but also the Chief Executive Officer of Smartty’s Management Limited, Selassie Ibrahim.

“We need the full amount back into the consolidated fund,” the statement said, mentioning the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, the Bureau of National Investigations and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) as the agencies to lead the arrest operation.
