President Akufo-Addo to grace first Africa Cinema Summit in Ghana

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will attend the maiden edition of the Africa Cinema Summit (ACS) scheduled to take place in Accra from Tuesday, November 14 to 16, 2023.

The first of its kind in Africa, the two day event is a key commitment of the Ghana Cinema Agenda launched by the National Film Authority of Ghana (NFA) to revamp the film sector in Ghana since the authority was established in December 2019.

The Africa Cinema Summit is expected to bring together major players and decision-makers such as government officials, film authorities and commissions from various African countries tp explore ways to address challenges in the industry.

Over 20 African countries and many global players will be attending the summit including Uganda, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Nigeria.

Among them are South Africa’s Stekinokor, Century Cinemax, which is the largest cinema player in East Africa, Association of Nigerian Cinemas (CEAN), Canal Olympio and Pathe from French Africa. ( Related article: Ghana hosts first Africa cinema summit in November)

Also, Warner Brothers will premiere the thriller of The Color Purple, an upcoming American musical coming-of-age period drama film directed by Ghanaian filmmaker, Blitz Bazawule at the summit.

The decision of President Akufo – Addo to grace the maiden ACS gives weight to the relevance Ghana places on the cinema agenda in making room for adequate policies and regulation to push the agenda.

According to the 2021 UNESCO report, the film and creative sector is the largest employer in Africa with a projected value of over 20billion dollars.

The report also highlights that with a population of 1.4 billion, Africa only boasts of 1,700 screens. This means that roughly over 80% of the population have never had a cinema experience.

The situation may perhaps be worse in Ghana where the country only boasts of less than five functioning cinemas in the Greater and Ashanti regions, serving a population of over 35 million.

These gaps undoubtedly remain high, including the lack of infrastructure, funding, and adequate professional and expertise training.

Hence the summit, which is being organised by the NFA in partnership with Filmhouse Group and Silverbird Cinemas, Ghana, falls within the broader agenda and objectives to highlight opportunities for cinema growth and the required roles of players in the sector.

The Africa Cinema Summit will similarly provide a platform for stakeholders in the industry value chain across the world to discuss challenges and explore potential and opportunities in the African cinema space.

According to Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, the CEO of NFA and the convener, “the summit is premised on the two pillars of content growth and cinema screens growth on the continent”.

“It is imperative ACS becomes a national and continental dialogue and we should be proud to have done the work to finally make this happen not only for Ghana, but for the entire continent of Africa.

“Everyone needs to get involved in this conversation. From the student, teacher, market woman, corporate organisation, and of course, to Government”.

Cecilia Marfo cries uncontrollably on TV, blames Kennedy Agyapong, Diana Asamoah for the mess of her church

0

Popular Ghanaian gospel singer cum Prophetess, Cecilia Marfo, has shared her harrowing experience of how her church which used to be populated with over 400 members has diminished to a paltry 40 members.

She blamed the near-collapse state of her church on Kennedy Agyapong, the MP for Assin Central and a flagbearer aspirant of New Patriotic Party (NPP) and fellow gospel musician, Diana Asamoah, for their issues with her that led to some of her members not attending her church.

While narrating her ordeal, Cecilia Marfo was crying uncontrollably as she attributed it to the pains she had gone through due to the state of her church.

Speaking in an interview with JoyPrime TV on the Prime Morning show, Cecilia Marfo noted that she has forgiven all the people whose inactions affected her ministry but believes God will deal with them at the right time.

This is how the conversation ensued between Cecilia Marfo and the host of the program, Cecilia Marfo.

Rosely Felli: There was a time when Kennedy Agyapong was criticizing some gospel musicians, some people said it affected their church, were you also affected?

Cecilia Marfo: What they have done to me God will fight for me. I had over 400 church members. If I tell you it’s left with 40, would you believe it? Sometimes when I think about the church I cry and I know everyone will be held accountable by God,” [afterward she bowed down her head and started weeping uncontrollably].

Roselyn Felli: What Diana did pained you because she was like a sister to you, right?

Cecilia Marfo: When my sister Diana Asamoah invited me to her programme I attended, but God told me to keep quiet because I am not the one to judge. The people who have repented through my songs are more than my church members.

“I have controlled myself but the way I think about the church is worrying and I know God has been good to me. The Bible says we should let things go. It is past but she is my sister. As believers, we should be wary of certain things that we do.

It will be recalled that Diana Asamoah described Cecilia Marfo as someone who is immature in Christ due to her high tone when she is ministering.

“Cecilia is yet to mature in God but I believe by the grace of God, through guidance and counselling, she is growing,” said Diana Asamoah,”she stated in an interview with Zionfelix.

Diana added, “The Holy Spirit can be controlled if He is truly working within you. Imagine I start speaking to you right now in tongues, you won’t understand it. When you are mature in Christ, worshipping God is not about preaching or praying at the top of your lungs. It also doesn’t mean that shouting in prayer is not good but let the works of your life depict maturity in God.”

The comment did not sit well with Cecilia Marfo who deemed it disappointing.

Renowned Ghanaian gospel singer cum politician, Evangelist Diana Asamoah has opened up about her position on relationships and how she handles men when they make advances on her.

According to her, many men have approached her with marriage proposals, but she has declined them to stay focused and not distract herself from her ministry.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on Accra-based Okay FM on Monday, November 7, the singer disclosed that while many men approach her intending to enter her life, she remains resolute in not allowing them to do so, adding that she wants to focus on her ministry as an evangelist and gospel singer.

The Italian Embassy in Ghana is set to celebrate the eighth edition of the Italian Cuisine Week with a dinner event showcasing and offering gourmet Italian recipes paired with wines from the twenty (20) wine producing regions of Italy. Italian cuisine, celebrated around the world for its bold flavors and fresh ingredients, is much more than just food – it is a reflection of Italy’s rich cultural history. On his part, Dr. Alessandro Gerbino, the Director of ITA for West Africa underscores the need to improve bilateral relations between Italy and West Africa with the goal of boosting trade and economies of the partner countries. “Italy can bring a larger number of products meeting the expectations of the Ghanaian consumers, particularly in the higher segments of the market. The number of people in Ghana aspiring to quality products in growing constantly, and no country like Italy can offer such large basket of food and wine products that combine health, quality and strong identity. Several Ghanaian companies have started new collaborations with Italian suppliers that are giving strong results, and we hope more will be encouraged to do so. The annual Italian Cuisine Week offers an important occasion to showcase a selection of products, and can certainly be a starting point for new partnerships.” he reiterates.

Partner companies for this year’s celebrations include IMEXCO Ghana Ltd., Dogal & TAD Group, Don Emilio Ltd., Say Cheers, Panific and Barona. Others are Pomona Restaurant, Newco Catering and Logistics Ltd., and Pinocchio.

Guinness World Records: Irish chef dethrones Hilda Baci’s longest cooking marathon record

0

Alan Fisher, Irish, owner and chef of a restaurant in Japan, has broken two cooking-related Guinness World Records titles.

First up, he’s claimed the longest cooking marathon (individual) after clocking in a time of 119 hours 57 minutes. That is more than 24 hours longer than the previous record held by Nigerian chef Hilda Baci.

Hilda Baci

Alan then claimed the longest baking marathon (individual), with a time of 47 hours 21 minutes. The previous record holder was Wendy Sandner (USA) with a time of 31 hours 16 minutes.

What’s even more impressive is that Alan took on both attempts back to back, meaning he was at work in the kitchen for over 160 hours with just over a day of rest in between!

Recreating Irish culture in Japan

On the year of his graduation from Dublin City University in 2008, Alan was looking for a challenge. By going through an overseas graduate programme, which introduced Irish graduates to companies in Asia, Alan received a job offer at a company in Tokyo.

About six years later, Alan had established himself well in Tokyo, and also met his wife (and to-be business partner). But something didn’t feel right for him.

Alan Fisher

“After the wedding, saying goodbye to 30 friends and family who came over, I remember a feeling of being trapped, thinking to myself, ‘Is this it? Is this my life now, to have kids and work in the same company?’ It was time for the next challenge.”

So in August 2014, Alan took the leap of faith and decided to start his own business; it was not difficult for him to pick Irish food and culture as the main themes of the business.

Alan’s restaurant Kyojin Stewhouse focuses on the mainstays of Irish households: stews, soups, homemade breads, and potatoes. According to Alan, customers would not only feel like they’re in Ireland, but also feel as if they are in his home.

Breaking records

Alan learned about the longest cooking marathon record in March while he was participating in the “I Love Ireland” festival in Tokyo. During this festival, Alan stood inside a rented kitchen car and stayed overnight twice.

During a break, he searched on the internet to find out that the record at the time was held by Lata Tondon (India) with a time of 87 hours 45 minutes. Then in May, Alan realized that Hilda Baci had extended the record to 93 hours and 11 minutes.

Meanwhile, Alan was still trying to recover from the difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“When Omicron spread, a sudden dining out advisory from the local Government meant I lost all my reservations for the month of July 2022 and needed to take out a pandemic support loan just to pay bills,” he said.

“I was broke and heartbroken. To have worked so hard for so long, to give up your own savings, your own salary and then still need a loan simply to stay in business with no guarantee things will recover. That was a tough pill to swallow.”

Despite the recent easing of restrictions, Alan continued to carry this negative energy as he continued with his work. “Lata and Hilda’s achievements served as an inspiration,” he said.

In order to channel his frustration and negativity into something positive, Alan decided to take on the record-breaking journey himself.

The record attempt proved to be extremely challenging, even during the preparation phase. In particular, Alan had to make a food distribution plan so that there would be no wastage of the food he cooked. “Everything must be for human consumption. My attempt would only be successful if the people of Matsue got behind what I was doing and showed up to support the challenge.”

In addition, Alan needed to film the record his attempt for evidence. He was thankful that TSK, the local TV provider, came to help. “I know that they needed to allocate staff and resources to support this challenge. This costs time and money and is definitely not lost on me. I’m incredibly grateful to them.”

During the record attempt, Alan had to overcome different types of obstacles as time went by. During the longest baking marathon (individual) record attempt, it was his back that caused him trouble. Because Alan was mixing dough by hand, his posture got distorted, and as a result, his back got tight and sore.

Towards the end of the longest cooking marathon (individual) record attempt, Alan had to endure fatigue and sleepiness. “I peeled roughly 300 kg of potatoes during the cooking marathon. For the first few days, I would look forward to this each evening as it gave me a chance to sit down.”

“Towards the end of the cooking marathon however, as fatigue started to take hold I would find it more and more difficult to stay awake whenever I sat down to start peeling. The rhythm of the peeling would almost hypnotize me. I had one hallucination on the second-to-last day. I turned to ask someone to pass me something, like I would on any normal day only to realize there was no one there.”

Despite the challenges, Alan says it was the people of the town who supported his record attempt who gave him the push to carry on.

“It got to the point where I definitely couldn’t give up. In my mind, I was representing myself, my family, and Irish food, and through these attempts, I was sharing our story. As time went by it became clear that many people in Matsue were also wishing me well. As if I had been adopted into this community over 9,000 km from my home. How could I not persevere? That was the only option.”

After nine days of baking and cooking, Alan had made 357 kg worth of soda bread and 590 kg worth of dishes (3,360 portions consisting of 32 recipes). But it was all worth it when he received his two world record certificates.

Prince Harry allegedly declines invitation to celebrate King Charles III’s 75th Birthday

0

Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex is expected to miss his father King Charles III’s 75th birthday celebrations, after reports he turned down an invitation to attend.

King Charles will hold a party to celebrate the milestone on November 14, at Clarence House, in London. He extended an invitation to the Duke of Sussex, who has turned it down, The Sunday Times reported.

It comes two months after the prince reportedly refused to attend a memorial for the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s death.

It is believed the king and his son have not seen or spoken to each other in person since Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, last September.

Prince Harry attended the 70th anniversary celebrations for the king, who was Prince of Wales at the time.

During a BBC documentary to mark the occasion, the prince said his father was doing an “amazing job”. He also said he was thankful for the support Charles had given him and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

The couple stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and moved to the US.

The following year, they were interviewed by Oprah Winfrey and provided insights into life in the royal family.

Their revelations escalated during the first year of King Charles’s reign, with the couple featured in a Netflix documentary.

In the six-part series, they shed light on their troubled life within the royal family and accused Kensington Palace of lying to protect Prince William, now Prince of Wales.

That was followed a month later by the release of Harry’s autobiography, Spare, and accompanying media appearances, during which he shared further painful revelations.

A friend of the king told The Sunday Times that when Charles “gets to the end of another successful work day and thinks of his family, there will always be a twinge in his heart about a problem that he hasn’t been able to solve yet”.

“The current act is a challenging one, there are issues that aren’t resolved and there won’t be a rapprochement any time soon. There is the sense of a cooling-off period from the family that is under way after the aftershocks of the book and the interviews,” the friend said.

“But that doesn’t change the king’s love for his son. He’ll never not invite his son to a family gathering, because that’s not who he is.”

Visually impaired Jessika Inaba becomes UK’s first blind black barrister in ‘truly remarkable’ achievement

0

Visually impaired young woman, Jessika Inaba, 23, who’s from Camden in North London, has made history in the United Kingdom by becoming the first black and blind barrister in the country.

A woman has smashed through the ‘triple-glazed glass ceiling’ to become Britain’s first blind and Black barrister, in an achievement that has been described as ‘truly remarkable.

Jessikah Inaba qualified last week after studying for five years at a university in London using Braille.

Braille is a method that uses raised dots for writing, and with the help of friends and tutors, Jessika managed to complete her studies despite her blindness.

She started her law degree in 2017 and later pursued a master’s degree and professional training.

Her hard work paid off, and she quickly joined the United Kingdom Bar, making her one of the few black and blind women to achieve this worldwide, but first in the UK.

Jessika is completely blind due to a condition called Bilateral microphthalmia, which results in smaller-than-usual eyes.

She faced many challenges but never gave up on her dream.

“I’ve always believed in myself, and I know I can do this job well. The more people like me who go through training, the easier it will become for others.” She said.

Mahama, Bawumia are no match to me – Alan Kyerematen brags

0

The Founder of the Movement for Change and an independent presidential candidate for the 2024 general election, Alan Kyerematen shared his views on the aftermath of the just-ended NPP Presidential Primaries that saw the Party election Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the new Presidential Candidate for the ruling party.

Mr Kyerematen, dug deep into his perspective on the election of Dr Bawumia in a question & answer session with the state-owned Ghanaian Times.

Q. H.E the Vice President, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been elected as the flagbearer of the NPP. Are you surprised or was it expected?

Ans. Whilst using this opportunity to congratulate His Excellency the Vice President in taking over the mantle of leadership in the NPP, his selection as flagbearer is not a surprise to any serious political watcher. It was the widely anticipated outcome of the elections. I had been saying all along that the electoral process had been strategically and tactically skewed in favour of a particular candidate. That is what we saw on Saturday.

Q. What about the margin of victory? Surely, 60% is a clear indicator?

Ans. To the contrary. Judging from the widely publicized expected margin of not less than 80% in favour of the Vice President, I am inclined to think that the 60% vote for him provides a clear indication that the Vice President does not have total control of his own Party. The election results must also be analysed against the background that the Vice President has been campaigning for the Flagbearership since 2020, and has been the beneficiary of both State and Party sponsored support.

In addition to the above, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong’s strong showing, even in areas where he lost to the Vice President, points clearly to the fact that the Vice President lacks broad national appeal. Ken’s call to Alan supporters to vote for him, which seems to have worked in his favour, also shows my continuing relevance and popularity amongst the rank and file of the NPP.

Q. Can the NPP break the eight?

Ans. Well, the emerging chorus and narrative from the Party for ‘Unity’ to Break the Eight, has very little relevance to the loud public demand for change in the political leadership of our country, to respond to the critical challenges of our time. The call to Break the Eight does not reflect the everyday concerns of the majority of Ghanaians, about the ailing economy and the lack of jobs for the teeming youth of Ghana.

So for me, the chances of NPP Breaking the Eight is very slim. In the same vein, however, the NDC does not provide a credible alternative. It is against this background, that the ever-increasing appetite of Ghanaians for a ‘Third Force’, must be considered as the only hope for Ghana to rise again. This is where the newly established Movement for Change under my leadership, becomes the saving grace for Ghana.

My record both within Government and the Private Sector in Ghana and around the world, makes me the right choice to lead Ghana, after the expiration of the term of office of the current Government.

Q. So how do you rate your chances against other Presidential Candidates?

Ans. Without necessarily pre-empting the emergence of any other Presidential Candidates, it is likely that the personalities that will dominate the ballot paper in December 2024, will be Alan, Mahama and Bawumia. If this eventually materialises, then one can reasonably predict that I will win the general elections and become the first Independent Candidate to be elected as President of the Republic of Ghana.

Q. You sound very confident of a win. But we know independent candidates do not do so well compared to the candidates of the two dominant parties, the NPP and the NDC?

Ans. After over 30 years of rotation of power between the NDC and NPP in the Fourth Republic, voters are demanding that Ghana moves beyond the duopoly of NDC and NPP. Never in the history of our country, has the quest and thirst for change been so pronounced. Therefore, the case for a non-partisan Independent Presidential Candidate could not have been better articulated than now. In addition, I have been a dominant figure in NPP politics since its establishment, and therefore the viability of my candidature for President cannot be evaluated on the same basis, as other Independent Presidential Candidates that have emerged in the past.

Be that as it may, it is clear that the people of Ghana are looking for a transformational leader, and in all humility, I believe I am fit for that purpose, particularly with the outdooring of my Great Transformational Plan (GTP) for Ghana.

Mr. Kyerematen, thank you very much for your time, and good luck.

With nearly 40% of the voters rejecting the candidature of the Vice President, political experts are already predicting a looming defeat for the ruling party ahead of the 2024 General Election.
