Persons arrested for engaging in galamsey at Anyinam issued Police inquiry bail

The Anyinam Police have issued police inquiry bail to the two suspects arrested by the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners for engaging in illegal mining, also known as galamsey at Anyinam in the Eastern Region.

The two suspects are among several others who had diverted the flow of the Birim river under the bridge at Anyinam.

The suspects were seen busily engaging in illegal mining with an excavator a few meters behind the Anyinam Police Station.

Their arrest infuriated the community members which resulted in a heated confrontation at the Anyinam Police Station.

According to Citi News sources within the regional command, the police who have begun investigations and are preparing dockets to get the suspects prosecuted have granted them bail to report daily at the station.

The source however disclosed that steps are underway to first get the suspects to reclaim the degraded site.

Meanwhile, the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners is continuing day two of its monitoring exercise with a visit to the Kyebi Water Treatment Plant which was shut down last year due to the activities of illegal miners.
