After a year of stalemate, members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) have finally elected the chief of Amakom, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, as the new Presiding Member.
He won by 100 votes to become the next Presiding Member.
TV3’s William Evans-Nkum reports that a total of 123 out of 147 assembly members voted at the TUC Hall in Kumasi, Thursday afternoon.
After voting, a maximum of 100 assembly members voted Yes whilst 22 voted No, one vote was rejected.
Since October 2015, elections held on different occasions to elect a presiding member for the KMA have been riddled with confusion. At least 8 attempts to get a PM was made.
On September 27, 2016 the two candidates who contested and failed to hit the two-thirds majority in the previous elections stepped down to allow new candidates to contest.
On October 4, 2016, Abraham Boadi and Michael Adusei contested but none was able to secure the required numbers to assume the vacant position.
The Manhyia Palace was petitioned about the development which has stalled developments in the electoral areas.
The need for a compromised candidate became necessary and Nana Adu Mensah Asare was finally elected.
He was sworn into office by his Lordship Justice Charles Agyei Wilson.
Nana Adu Mensah Asare expressed his gratitude to the assembly members.
Early on, the chief of Adum Baffour Kese, the chief of Domeabra Nana Kusi Boadum and the chief of Bebere Nana Yaw Atta had their membership of the assembly revoked. This enabled Nana Adu Mensah Asare to be made a member of the assembly leading to his election.
