Dede Ayew’s rep slams talk of captaincy controversy

Gyan-Ayew

A spokesman for Ghana Black Stars’ deputy captain, Andre Ayew, has slammed suggestions that the Swansea City forward is undermining the team’s captain, Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan claimed in a recent interview that “I was named as the captain of Black Stars when it reached my turn, so people should wait until my reign is over. If God doesn’t make you a king and you crown yourself king, your reign will be fruitless.”

The comment has been taken as a swipe at Andre Ayew who has not hidden his ambition to become the captain of the Black Stars in future.

But a spokesman, Fiifi Tackie, says the suggestion of a power struggle between the two is nonsense.

“I don’t understand where this has come from. Dede understands there is a Ghana captain and he has always treated Gyan with utmost respect neither has he undermined him,” Tackie said.

“There is nothing wrong if Dede says he has ambitions to captain Ghana one day. Absolutely nothing wrong and I hope people would realise that is not a slight on  anybody’s leadership.”
