The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) says the country’s borders will not be closed as a result of the upcoming elections.
It however said thorough checks will be conducted on travellers to safeguard the security of the country.
Answering a question on security at the borders ahead of the 2016 elections, Head of Public Relations at GIS Francis Palmdeti, said the country operates an open border with its neighbours and in the absence of any eventuality, it will so be.
“We can’t close our borders because we have elections coming on,” the Assistant Controller of immigration (ACOI) said on TV3’s Midday Live on Monday, July 11.
ACOI Palmdeti also clarified the recent African Union policy on a 30-day visa upon arrival for African nationals.
He said the protocol does not mean a visa-free entry as pertains to nationals of the sub-region.
One would have to pay a fee for the visa upon arrival, he said, adding that the general fee is currently $150.
“With this particular policy it gives them 30-day expiration but they will obtain the visas on arrival and it is not free.”
