Ghana’s Music Industry Lacks Veteran Musician Reward Structures – Wendy Shay

Singer Wendy Shay highlighted the absence of adequate structures to honor and reward veteran musicians.
She emphasized the necessity for a system acknowledging the invaluable contributions of seasoned artists who have paved the way for the industry’s growth.
She elaborated on the deficiency in Ghana’s music industry, pointing out the lack of frameworks to reward musicians who have significantly contributed to its development.

During an interview on TV3, Wendy Shay discussed her visit to the ailing K.K. Kabobo, currently battling liver disease.She conveyed a deep sense of concern upon witnessing the challenging circumstances faced by legends like K.K. Kabobo, attributing it to the industry’s absence of proper structures. Wendy Shay pointed out that if musicians like K.K. Kabobo had access to the benefits and opportunities enjoyed by the current generation, their situations might have taken a different turn.

“There was a little bit of a heartbreak to see our legends go through these kinds of states because I feel there is no structure in the industry that is paying musicians who have paid their dues. Imagine if at that time they had what we are enjoying today, I think they would have been fine because he had monster hit songs. And it’s just sad that we are now catching up,”she expressed.

Wendy Shay, who recently provided financial assistance to the ailing K.K. Kabobo, lamented the situation and advocated for a practical resolution. She urged the industry to establish a comprehensive framework ensuring that veteran musicians receive the acknowledgment, support, and rewards they rightfully deserve.
