I wrote my “16 Years” song in a Taxi – MzBel

Legendary Ghanaian Hiplife artist, Belinda Ekuah Amoah, widely known as Mzbel has revealed that she wrote her monster hit song, “16 Years” in a Taxi.

Mzbel made this known while speaking about the inspiration behind the song in an interview on 3Music’s Big Conversation as she shared that her experiences on the issue inspired her and she immediately got to writing.

According to the songstress, she was riding in a Taxi when she heard a conversation on the radio about the girl child and rape by Maame Dokono.

“I was in a taxi when I came up with the lyrics. I used to stay with a lot of girls from James Town, so I watched how they talk and the way they behaved. And Maame Dokono was always on the radio talking about rape, so we were in a taxi one day and we were listening to Maame Dokono and I was watching how people were reacting to the stories and I came up with the song ’16 yrs’, she shared.

She continued, ”So I started writing in the taxi and when I got home, I built on it and that was it”

When asked if she saw the impact of the song coming, the music diva responded;

”Not at all, I didn’t even know it would go outside Ghana. It was just another nice song I thought I have done. But the next minute, it was in Nigeria, Togo and in Equatorial Guinea.”

The hit song ’16 years’ was released 2007 featuring the legendary Castro ‘de Destroyer’ and was produced by Jay Q.
