Medeama handed cracking Confederation Cup group

Medeama SCMedeama have been handed the toughest possible draw in the CAF Confederaion Cup after they were thrown into group A alongside former champions league winners TP Mazembe.

The Ghanaian side, through to the group stage of the Confederations Cup at the second time of asking would need to dig deep in order to prolong their stay in the competition after the draw in Cairo also set them up against Tanzania’s Young Africans and MO Bejaia who are well know in Ghana for knocking out Kumasi Asante Kotoko a few years ago.

The group stage of the competition is due to run from June 17 to August 23rd. Medeama would be hoping to extend their participation beyond that and become the first Ghanaian clubs in an African club football competition final after Kotoko and Hearts contested the first Confederation Cup final in 2004.

Group B of the Confederation Cup is an all North African affair which features two Moroccoan teams with Fath Union Sports and Kawkab Athletic drawn against Etoile du Sahel and Ahly Tripoli.

The flagship African Champions League is also set to provide some fascinating contests.  South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, restored just before the draw after Congo DR’s AS Vita were thrown out would have their hands full in the group stages.

The South African champions face Nigeria’s Enyimba, Zamalek of Egypt and the Algeria outfit Es Setif in group B. Group A will revive an age old rivalry between Al Ahly of Egypt and the Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosa. The other teams in the group are WAC of Morocco and Zesco United.
