Nigerian journalist Lerin Nicodemus labels Burna Boy a “fraud” and “uninspiring artiste”

Nigerian TV presenter Lerin Nicodemus has ignited a fiery debate within the music industry by labelling Grammy-winning artist Damini “Burna Boy” Ogulu as “the most uninspiring artiste.”

Nicodemus made this controversial statement in response to Burna Boy’s recent comments suggesting that Afrobeats music lacks “substance.”

The media personality’s criticism stems from Burna Boy’s perceived change in attitude towards Afrobeats.

She accused Burna Boy of riding the wave of international recognition and profiting from Afrobeats’ popularity on the global stage, only to now condemn the genre’s supposed lack of depth.

Lerin Nicodemus further argued that Burna Boy’s actions made him appear hypocritical, as he built his brand on the foundations of Pan-African activism inspired by the legendary Fela Kuti.

In her statement, Nicodemus went on to describe Burna Boy as a “fraud” for allegedly failing to implement the Pan-African ideals he often alluded to in his music and public persona.

She pointed out that despite positioning himself as an advocate for social change, Burna Boy has remained silent or made mockery of societal issues during times of socio-political turmoil in Nigeria and Africa at large.

The TV presenter didn’t stop at criticizing Burna Boy’s activism. Nicodemus compared him unfavourably with his contemporaries, Wizkid and Davido, who she believes actively promote Afrobeats and uplift upcoming artists.

She accused Burna Boy of belittling others whenever an opportunity arises, in stark contrast to the supportive stance taken by Wizkid and Davido.
