Lithium mining: Christian Council, Chief Imam’s office reject govt’s deal

0

The clergy in Ghana has out rightly rejected the recent agreement reached by the government of Ghana for the exploration of the country’s Lithium mineral resources.

The government signed a 15-year lease agreement with lithium mining company Barari DV Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Limited, to commence the construction and mining of lithium at Ewoyaa in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region.

The deal includes a 10% royalty and 13% free carried interest by the state, surpassing the existing 5% and 10%, respectively, for other mining agreements.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), on the deal, on Tuesday, December 12, 2023, representatives of the Christian Council of Ghana and the Office of the National Chief Imam of Ghana, came to an agreement that the government’s deal with Barari DV was not in the interest of the country.

Some of the members of the Christian Council said that the Lithium resources of the country should be left in the ground if the government can not get a deal that would be in the interest of Ghanaians.

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Dr Paul Kwabena Boafo, said that Ghanaians should not sit down and allow this to happen.

“We cannot as a nation sit down and let this also go down the drain and let people take it away for us to suffer, for our people to suffer.

“I think that what we ought to do is take this agreement, look at it critically, come out with what we would need… 100% should be on the table, that this is what Ghanaians need. It should ensure to the benefit of Ghanaians,” he said.

Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, the spokesperson for Ghana’s National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, said that all stakeholders in the country should have been engaged before the deal was signed.

He called for the contract to be abrogated for more consultation.

“The mineral resources of our country do not belong to us alone. It belongs to the children unborn. Those who negotiate it must do it in our interest.

“Let us stop the contract, go into it and ensure that it is done in a manner that benefits Ghana,” he added.

A member of the Council of State, Sam Okudzeto, called on the Parliament of Ghana to use its powers to ensure that the contract agreement is not implemented.

Background

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, signed the first-ever lease for the exploitation of lithium in the country on October 19, this year.

This followed Cabinet’s approval of the Green Minerals Policy, which makes it mandatory for prospective holders of leases for lithium and other green minerals to establish a refinery for processing the resource.

Since the granting of the lithium mining lease, some CSOs, individuals and institutions have criticised the deal, describing it as bad for the country.

There have also been calls to grant mining leases through a tender process.

Mr Jinapor, however, defended the government’s position at a state-organised press conference last Thursday.

He was supported by the Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi, and that of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng.

Music has no language barrier – Joseph Matthew responds to Nathaniel Bassey’s claims

0

UK-based Ghanaian Afro-Gospel musician, Joseph Matthew has challenged the notion that Ghanaian gospel artists need to sing in English to achieve global recognition.

According to him, language shouldn’t be a barrier to spreading God’s word through music and so Ghanaian musicians shouldn’t be forced to sing in English.

In a video posted on his Instagram page yesterday, the artiste who is known for songs such as Halleluyah, Nyame Ye, My Story, Not Alone and The Name explained that the power of music goes beyond language and racial backgrounds.

Joseph Matthew pointed out that musicians needed conscious efforts to grow their songs globally and not necessarily singing in English.

“Any Ghanaian supporting Nathaniel Bassey’s comments is ignorant. To go global you need the right plugs. It’s not just about language, there are so many factors that work together so we shouldn’t encourage this narrative,” he stated.

Joseph Matthew’s comments add up to the growing conversation about the choice of language by Ghanaian gospel musicians following a passionate appeal by Nigeria’s Nathaniel Bassey for the latter to sing in English to grow their global audience.

Bassey urged Ghanaian gospel musicians to write songs in English, asserting that the world needed to hear their songs and was very optimistic that Ghanaians will be able to hold concerts in Nigeria in future.

“Yes, I know you love your local dialect, Twi, but there is an anointing on you and the world needs to hear your songs,” Nathaniel Bassey said at Jesus Christ Encounter event held at the Accra Sports Stadium recently.

Turkish football bosses suspended all leagues after a referee was punched to the ground by a club president following a top-flight game on Monday.

Halil Umut Meler was struck by MKE Ankaragucu president Faruk Koca, who ran on to the pitch after his team conceded a 97th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 Super Lig draw with Caykur Rizespor.

“The matches in all leagues have been postponed indefinitely,” Turkish FA [TFF] chairman Mehmet Buyukeksi told a news conference.

“This attack is a night of shame for Turkish football,” he added.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino called the incident “totally unacceptable” and said that violence has “no place in our sport or society”.

“Without match officials there is no football,” he said. “Referees, players, fans and staff have to be safe and secure to enjoy the game, and I call on the relevant authorities to ensure that this is strictly implemented and respected at all levels.”

Meler received several blows from others as he lay on the turf and suffered injuries including a minor fracture.

The incident sparked chaotic scenes involving players and club officials.

Koca required treatment in hospital but “detention procedures will be carried out after the treatment”, said Turkey’s minister of internal affairs, Ali Yerlikaya.

Yerlikaya added others had been arrested for their part in the incident, which he “strongly condemned”.

Meler, 37, is one of Turkey’s top referees and officiates international games for Fifa. He is also on Uefa’s elite referee list.

He also required hospital treatment and the chief physician of the hospital where he was treated, Dr Mehmet Yorubulut, said: “There is no life threat for the moment. He only has bleeding around his left eye and a small fracture.

“We will [monitor] our referee until the morning due to head trauma. We will discharge him from hospital after the necessary examinations in the morning.”
