Sonnie Badu heats the stage with electrifying performance at “Rhythms Of Africa” concert

0

Renowned UK-based Ghanaian Gospel musician Dr Sonnie Badu in partnership with Image Bureau, an events company founded by media mogul George Quaye, on Saturday, December 9, 2023, electrified the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Center in Accra with a remarkable gospel musical concert “Rhythms of Africa.”

Offering an overview of the event, the stage setup was undeniably world-class. The harmonious blend of sounds from instruments, vibrant LCDs, and the seamless synergy among backing vocalists created a captivating experience for the audience.

Despite the slated 7 PM start time, the event experienced a delay. Ghanaians and foreigners began streaming in earlier than expected, even while sound checks were still in progress.

The entrance of the Grand Arena was inundated with eager individuals, yearning to experience the performances of musicians set to enchant music lovers with their luscious presentations.

The lineup of musicians that join the UK-based iconic Ghanaian gospel singer in delivering soul-stirring performances includes MOG Music, Piesie Esther, Joe Mettle, Nacee, and Perez Musik from Ghana, as well as Neon Adejo and Preye Odede from Nigeria.

Before the show commenced, Ghana’s finest MC, Nathaniel Attoh, had to apologise to the audience for the late start to the program. Some disappointed fans expressed their displeasure with the delay through vocal outbursts.

In the charged atmosphere, a comforting ministration proved to be a fitting way to compensate for the delay. The perfect vibe was set when contemporary gospel artist, FRA delivered a soul-stirring performance of his hit song, “You dey feel the vibe.”

The mood was just right after his performance, with the crowd continuing to pour in, some finding themselves standing due to the overwhelming attendance.

Periodically, musical performances were momentarily paused to pay tribute to esteemed past gospel musicians by presenting them with plaques of appreciation.

A succession of electrifying and enchanting performances kept the audience in high spirits as artists like Perez Musik, Nacee, Neon Adejo, and Preye Odede enchanted the crowd with gospel tunes. Noteworthy was Preye Odede’s performance, where he became so engrossed that he resisted handing over the microphone when his allotted time concluded.

Commendably, the impeccable chemistry of his band, as it left everyone in awe, almost as if a spell had been cast on the audience.

The event gave an unforgettable experience, providing a spiritual journey by touching souls for the Kingdom of God.

Committee Chairman ‘missing in Parliament’ during Anti-Gay Bill consideration

0

Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, Chairman of the Constitutional, Legal, and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, found himself noticeably absent during the pivotal consideration stage of the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values 2021,” commonly known as the anti-gay bill.

Despite his earlier presence in the House on Friday, December 8, 2023, Anyimadu-Antwi’s absence at this crucial juncture prompted the Ranking Member, Bernard Ahiafor, to step in and guide the House through the bill’s amendment stage.

Initially slated for consideration on Wednesday, the bill encountered obstacles when concerns were raised by the First Deputy Speaker, Joe Osei-Owusu, and the Majority leadership regarding the absence of the Committee Chairman.

This setback led to frustration among the bill’s sponsors, who accused the Majority leadership of impeding its progress.

Lead sponsor Samuel Nartey George, MP for Ningo Prampram, went as far as threatening to expose NPP MPs allegedly influenced by LGBTQ+ advocates in the country.

Despite these prior hindrances, Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin assured the House on Thursday that the bill would be enacted before the festive season recess.

However, when the consideration stage was announced on Friday, the Committee Chairman was conspicuously absent, raising eyebrows given the previous listing in the Order of Paper.

Speaker Alban Bagbin maintained that the House could proceed with the bill’s consideration despite the Committee Chairman’s absence, and indeed, it did.

The session addressed Clause 1, involving five of the 17 proposed amendments.

As outlined in the accompanying memorandum, the bill’s objective is to establish proper human sexual rights and uphold Ghanaian family values.

It seeks to prohibit LGBTQ+ and related activities, as well as the promotion or advocacy for such matters.

Additionally, the bill aims to ensure the protection and support of individuals, particularly children, associated with LGBTQ+ matters.

As the anti-gay bill progresses, the absence of the Committee Chairman during this critical phase adds a layer of intrigue to the legislative proceedings.

Angelina Jolie trashes Hollywood calling it shallow and unhealthy place

0

American actress cum filmmaker, Angelina Jolie has disclosed that she wouldn’t be an actress if she was starting out in the entertainment industry today.

That was just one of the revelations the star shared in her recently published interview with the Wall Street Journal Magazine.

In an article, titled “Angelina Jolie Is Rebuilding Her Life,” she talked “healing” after her split from Brad Pitt to her plans for the future.

She also touched on her feelings about the town that helped make her a star.

“I grew up in quite a shallow place,” Jolie said of Hollywood. “Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.”

The daughter of actor Jon Voight, Jolie told the publication, “Because I grew up around Hollywood, I was never very impressed with it. I never bought into it as significant or important.”

But given the choice to break into the industry now, Jolie probably wouldn’t.

“I wouldn’t be an actress today,” she said, with the caveat that perhaps she would have done theater, but not Hollywood. “When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”

Part of the scrutiny has come about as a result of her filing from divorce seven years ago from Pitt with whom she shares six children.

During that time, Jolie has cut back on work and mostly been at home with her children.

“We had to heal,” she said of her family. “There are things we needed to heal from.”

She understands the interest in her life. At one point she and Pitt were a golden couple in the industry.

“Since I was young, people liked the part of me that’s pretty tough and maybe a bit wild—that’s the part that I think people enjoy,” Jolie said. “I’m not the one [who] you want to hear about my pain or my sadness. You know, that’s not entertaining.”

The humanitarian who is as comfortable in a refugee camp as she is on a movie set, said she plans to eventually move from Los Angeles and spend more time at her home in Cambodia.

“It’s part of what happened after my divorce,” Jolie said. “I lost the ability to live and travel as freely. I will move when I can.”

Data costs and poor internet are keeping Ghanaians from streaming music – Bullgod bemoans

0

Artiste manager, Lawrence Nana Asiamah Hanson, popularly known as Bullgod has asserted that Ghanaian musicians are experiencing limited support for their music on major streaming platforms due to exorbitant costs of data and poor internet connectivity in the country.

Bullgod contends that Ghanaians are inherently supportive of their artistes but are hindered by the challenges of expensive data and unreliable internet, posing significant obstacles to the growth of music streaming for local musicians.

Bullgod who is well-known for managing several successful Ghanaian artistes, including some of the biggest names in the industry, pointed out that the majority of music streams for Ghanaian artistes come from outside the country.

“Let’s talk about the matters and these are facts. Check your streams and you’ll know all is from outside. If you check, the reason why we don’t stream our music is because data is expensive. If the artistes are genuine with their analytics, they will tell you that most of their streams are from outside, Ghanaians living in the diaspora.”

“Out there, let’s say in the other regions if they are relaxing and they want to stream music, the thing will not even stream, and you’ll see nor kpa, your 10 cedis worth of data is gone. Who will try that thing?”

“Nobody is sitting in Tarkwa or wherever where the network is even bad there will stream your music. Look, we are in Accra, and you know Accra is the hub, and everybody makes wild dey go find something. How many people will be streaming music?”, he remarked in a recent interview on TV3.

Parliament approves 2024 Budget

0

Parliament of Ghana on Thursday approved the 2024 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the government for the year ending December 31, 2024.

This will allow the government to spend a total of GH¢ 259,052,474,750 from the Consolidated Fund and other public funds in the next financial year.

The approval followed a 138 to 136 headcount which saw the “Ayes” by the Majority have the day.

Announcing the outcome of the headcount, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, said: “At the end of the headcount, the “Ayes” are 138 and the “Nay” 136. Absent: One.

“Honourable members, the ‘Ayes” have it and this House accordingly approves the budget statement and economic policy of the government for the year ending December 31, 2024.”

The Majority Caucus was able to have a breakthrough as their members turned up in their numbers for a showdown with their colleagues on the other side of the House.

Although the Minority Caucus also had its members present in their numbers, the absence of the Member of Parliament for Assin North, James Gyakye Quayson, did not help their bid to reject the budget after polling 136 “Nays”.

The Minority had attempted to resist the approval of the budget on grounds that it contained new tax handles that would not serve the interest of the ordinary Ghanaian and businesses.

These taxes are expected to rake in about GH¢ 11 billion for the government next year.

The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, was present in the House to witness the proceedings.

Boycott

The Majority in Parliament on November 29, 2023, staged a walkout ahead of the approval of the budget.

The boycott came about after the Majority and the Minority Leaders had taken turns to wrap up a week-long debate and a presentation by the Minister of Finance in the House.

The Speaker of Parliament then put a voice vote on the motion and declared that the “Ayes” by the Majority had it.

But the Speaker’s ruling was challenged by the Minority on the grounds that there was no distinctive difference between the “Ayes” and the “Nays” by the Minority.

Invoking Order 113 (2), the Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, called for a headcount or division.

The Speaker heeded the request by the Deputy Minority leader and instructed the Clerks at the Table to conduct the headcount, saying that the names of each MP would be called out for him or her to stand up.

But the Majority strongly objected to the Speaker’s decision on grounds that he had earlier declared the “Ayes” in favour of the motion and should stand by his decision and disallow the headcount.

Consequently, members of the Majority Caucus staged a walkout from the Chamber, disrupting the approval process for the budget.

However, when the House was due to approve the budget the following day, most of the members of the Majority Caucus failed to show up.

They were, however, represented by the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu; the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh.

Video: Don Little arrested for allegedly slapping policeman after knocking down motor rider

0

Kumawood actor, Don Little has found himself at the wrong side of the law for knocking down a motor rider with his car in Kasoa, Central Region and also allegedly slapping a police man.

The incident occurred when he was rushing a friend grappling with suicidal thoughts to the hospital.

Eyewitnesses revealed that Don Little, attempting to navigate through a group of motorbike riders on the road, unintentionally collided with one of them.

Despite sounding his horn in an effort to clear the way, he was unsuccessful, resulting in the collision.

A police officer present at the scene alleged that the actor had assaulted him, claiming he was slapped twice.

Don Little vehemently denied the accusations, stating that his sole focus was on getting his distressed friend to the hospital.

Giving accounts on what transpired at the scene in an interview sighted by Graphic Showbiz on GH TV on their YouTube channel, an unnamed sourced shared that “According to Don Little, his friend called him that one of their friends wanted to commit suicide, so he should intervene. On his way to the hospital with his friend, he was in a hurry.

“He got to a place where there were motor riders on the way, so he blew the horn for them to give him way, but it wasn’t successful.”

The situation escalated as the police officer insisted on Don Little’s arrest, leading to the actor being taken to the Kasoa police station.

During an interaction with the police, Don Little expressed his disbelief, questioning why he was being detained while attempting to assist someone in need.

“I was taking someone to the hospital, and one of the motor riders was in the middle lane, and I clashed with him. How can you allow the person I was taking to the hospital to go and arrest me,” Don Little stated during the police questioning.
