Commercial drivers cry over hardship; campaign for Akufo-Addo

A group of commercial drivers in the Central Region have formed a movement to campaign for a change in government, citing ‘hard economic conditions’ which they say is crippling their business.

Calling themselves “Drivers For Change,” they say the astronomical increment in fuel , insurance premiums, spare parts,  and road worthiness stickers among others under the National Democratic Congress-led government has necessitated the need for their call for change.

“We believe that if we do not call for change in the upcoming general elections in November 2016,  most of us will leave the driving business and there will be nothing for us to do,” President of the group, Kweku  Boateng said at the launch of group Tuesday in Cape Coast.

Change2

TV3’s Thomas Cann reported that about 200 commercial drivers attended the launch of the group have rallied support for the flag-bearer of the New Patriotic Party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

They claim to have 840 members in the central region, and would move to get members from other regions of the country.

They wore T-shirts designed with NPP colours with Nana Akufo-Addo’s picture and his party’s logo embossed in the shirts.

“We’re suffering . We will continue with our campaign until Nana Akufo-Addo wins power in 2017,” Mr Boateng said, noting “It has been very difficult to make our daily sales, renew our vehicle insurance premium and buy enough fuel to run our vehicles, let alone cater for our families,”

They argued that the rate at which prices of vehicle parts and petroleum products among other related items have gone up between 2008 and now has been sky-high.

They said petrol in 2008 was sold at GHC3.50 per gallon at a time that the crude price on the world market was 147 dollars a barrel, hence do not understand why it should now sell at GHC17.00 when crude is being sold 50 dollars a barrel.

“We have watched the situation very critically and have come to the conclusion that this government cannot make things better for us. Prices are increased without consultation and we only learn of the increases when we are buy items,” Mr Boateng said.

I wish Atsu could play more at club level – Desailly

0

Christian Atsu

Former France star Marcel Desailly has urged Ghanaian international Christian Atsu to be more active at the club level, as he expressed worry about the unstable nature of Christian Atsu’s club career so far.

The World and European Cup winner told 3FM 92.7 he is also not enthused that there are not enough Ghanaian players at a high level.

He told Yaw Ofosu Larbi. “They don’t play abroad, they are second choices, third choices just because the focus and the interest is the money from the beginning instead of building up knowledge and having a capacity. It’s not so bad we just have to structure it well.”

Though impressed by a few players, Desaily feels too many of the players are not at the right level including Black Stars midfielder Christian Atsu.

“We have too many players abroad. We have legitimate ones and top ones. I wish Atsu who has a great ability and capacity could at least play in his club. He has been moving around from Chelsea to Everton and now Malaga. I don’t know how well he’s doing there but I need him to be good. I believe in him. I believe in his capacity. Many others are stable in their club like Andre, like Jordan and it gives them experience of the high level but it is not enough. We need a lot more others who get involved at the high level of the game.”

Ecobank Nigeria fires 1,040 Workers

0

Ecobank-1

The gale of job losses being witnessed in the country due to the current economic hardship has caught up with Ecobank Nigeria, which has sacked over 1,040 of its employees.

Ealier, Diamond Bank Plc of Nigeria had sacked over 200 members of its workforce, while FBN Holdings, the parent company of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, recently gave notice it would prune the number of its employees by 1,000.

The PUNCH newspaper reported last Friday that its investigations had revealed that the affected staff members of Ecobank included full time and contract workers.

Top officials of the pan-African lender confirmed to correspondents that the initial list of those to be sacked had over 1,400, workers but was later reduced to “a little above 1,000.”

Ecobank spokespersons declined to comment on the number of workers who were disengaged.

However, the lender said in a statement that it had converted over 200 outsourced personnel to permanent employees as part of its drive to attract and reward talent, while also repositioning for improved efficiency.

In line with the recognition of excellence, the bank also said it had recently implemented a merit-based pay increase for the top performers across all cadres.

Ensuring efficiency

The Managing Director, Ecobank, Mr Charles Kie, was quoted as saying that converting qualified outsourced staff to permanent workers was in line with the bank’s commitment to developing and growing talent by nurturing its people along their career paths and giving them access to higher responsibilities.

He said the bank was resolute that recognising and rewarding excellence would drive its goal of achieving exceptional performance in the industry.

Mr Kie said, “the bank, in its renewed drive for optimal performance, has in addition realigned certain roles bank wide to ensure improved efficiency. This necessitates the exits of some staff who were adequately compensated.

“This is in furtherance of a market repositioning exercise designed to strengthen the bank’s business across all markets where it operates.”

He emphasised that the ETI was on a trajectory to achieve leadership and that the Nigerian subsidiary remained one of Ecobank Transnational Incorporated’s major affiliates as well as one of the country’s systemically important financial institutions.

Mr Kie explained, “Our focus is to improve the quality of service to our customers as well as our operational efficiency.

“We understand that people are our key assets; so, we have emphasised the need to reward our best performers, continue to re-invigorate our people, while also opening up new opportunities for talented and committed people to join us as permanent employees. At the same time, based on our repositioning plan, we had to disengage some staff, while ensuring that, in line with industry standards, they are treated fairly.”

Ecobank Group

Ecobank Nigeria is a member of the Ecobank Group, which is present in 36 African countries, including Ghana, where the bank remains the largest by assets, capital and profitability.

The Group employs nearly 19,000 people from 40 different countries in over 1,200 branches and offices.

ETI has posted over N40bn decline in its profit for the 2015 financial year, owing to high impairment charges.

“The National Championship will be a special event where we are keen to see the champion of champions in the National Competition, and we hope Vishal will make his school and country delighted,” he said.

Mr Mukesh Thakwani, Director of DPS International, Ghana could not hide his joy when his son once again won the competition. He seized the opportunity to thank the coaches of the participants for bringing out the best in the students and urged them to do more.

Parents present at the function expressed their excitement at the competition claiming it has brought them together as a family and gives their wards confidence as well as a boost in their academics, especially in the English language.

They suggest that the event should be held periodically in every school pledging to always encourage their wards to compete.

The South Asian Spelling Bee is an annual literacy platform for children of South Asian descent. It is an annual contest held each June and July to select the top two spellers nationwide. It is also aimed at teaching students the proper and effective use of the English Language.

This is the maiden competition held in Africa for children up to 14 years of age.

The contest was conducted in written and oral format which served as the elimination as well as the selection process for the finalists. Children had to spell over 15 words correctly to qualify for the afternoon oral round and from there the top three were awarded prize money and the top two qualified for the finals.

The event was organised by the South Asian advertising firm, Touchdown Media Inc. and sponsored by Metlife, a leading global provider of life insurance, annuities, employee benefits and asset management. NHIS and School Feeding are my ideas – Dr Mahama insists

0

Dr. Edward Mahama

The flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has reiterated that some of the social intervention programs implemented by successive governments were his ideas.

Dr. Edward Mahama in an interview with 3FM cited two major policies National Health Insurance Scheme and the School Feeding Program.

“You remember in 2004, or perhaps you were not following me, I said then that I was going to introduce a subject called thinking  into kindergarten, JHS, and SHS…Thinking, you have thought about the idea  you can implement it and that is what I have done.

“You know when I talk about the national health insurance, the papers at that time said where are you going to get the money, when I talked about school feeding they said we are HIPC, Dr Mahama is throwing dust into people’s eyes, how can he do it”.

He added that “They are all programs that exist now even though they are not properly run as I conceived them so I am saying that my fulfillment in life is contributing to the development of my nation”.

Dr. Mahama also called for strict implementation of building codes to prevent flooding in the country.

“These flood disasters in Accra they keep occurring. One, our systems are not working, building permits, siting of homes on the wrong place, people in authority close their eyes or take monies and allow people to do things they shouldn’t do; as I said it, because building codes are not followed, the regulatory agencies do not enforce the regulations for buildings, for constructions, and so we are collectively responsible” he explains.

Ghana Rugby gives blood to save lives

Blood donation

June 3 marked one year since over 160 people died directly or indirectly due to heavy flooding in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

The tragic event was remembered by a special blood donation event supported by Mr. Herbert Mensah, President of the Ghana Rugby Football Union and past Chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko football club, who mobilised a large contingent of Ghana Rugby players to show solidarity with the victims and their families.

Ghana Rugby players who joined the blood donation exercise in a show of solidarity included the captain of the national men’s sevens team, the Ghana Eagles, who recently lifted the Bronze Cup in the Africa Rugby international tournament in Lome, Togo.

Other players included Michael Ako Wilson (President of the Ghana Rugby Union Players Association (GRUPA)), Salisu Abdul Rahman better known as Hakim (captain of Conquerors SC who won the 2016 Ghana Rugby Club Championship), Jason Dzata, Razak Shabby, Solomon Akumba, Andrews Amisah, Prince Boamah, Francis Lawson, Rueben Banama, Andrews Amissah, Percy Adamson, Prince Kwaku, Nathaniel Addy, Razak  Shaibu, Moro Kwao, Solomon Akumba, Rafatu Innusah, Fussei Jibril, Etisam Abubakari, Jamila Annas, Rebecca, Kadija Adams, Fauzia Larry and Gifty Kukua Aggrey.

Herbert Mensah is also known as the person who have religiously since 2001 “remembered” the May 9, 2001 Accra Sports Stadium Disaster when 127 young football fans died needless during a match between arch rivals Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak.

Mensah said that both the tragedies of 2001 and 2015 could have been avoided if those in charge of the management of the match (2001) and those in charge of town planning had done their jobs responsibly.

“We can never forget these fatal events as they are a reminder to those charged with the responsibility of looking after the safety of people that the price of negligence can indeed be very costly, “Mensah said.

The blood donation exercise organised took place on Friday 3 June 2016 at Reverend Bruce Memorial Methodist Church at Odornaah close to the venue of the GOIL fire tragedy one year ago. The exercise was managed by the National Blood Service, Ghana (NBSG).

According to a spokesperson of NBSG the blood bank never has enough blood and that the Service depends on voluntary blood donors and voluntary donor organizers to bring in their friends, relatives and organized groups. She went on to say that blood donation is a noble, selfless service that not only gives the donor a feeling of joy and contentment but that it is in fact a civic responsibility.

A huge crowd remembered the event with many dignitaries in attendance including the Mayor of Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, and renowned lawyer Philip Addison who has been elected parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party in the Klottey Korley constituency.

The workers were returning from sugarcane harvest when the Kia truck [GR 878 -11] they were travelling in overturned on a hill at Apewosika in the Komenda-Edina-Aguafo-Abirem area on Monday at about 7:00pm.

One of the 75 workers who were on board the truck died on the spot and 62 others sustained various degree of injuries. The injured were rushed to the Central Regional Hospital where they were treated and discharged

ECG workers demand continuous use of suspended billing software

0

ECG

Workers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) to withdraw its directive to the power distributor to suspend its billing software.

The unionized staff of ECG claim say they have been compelled to issue the ultimatum because the PURC directive has given some customers the motivation to physically assault, intimidate and abuse some of the ECG staff.

The PURC in May issued a directive to the ECG to suspend the software, citing astronomical bills of post-paid customers which it traced to the billing software, as the basis.

Some consumers have in recent months been complaining of overbilling, with some claiming their bills have doubled although they consume the same quantity of power

Addressing the media on Monday, the General Secretary of the Public Utility Workers Union, Ato Bondzie Quaye said “the workers will take the next cause of action after seven days.

“The workers believe there is nothing wrong with the software but the problem is the lack of information about how the new software operates and the new billing system which have been introduced,” he said.

Mr Bondzi-Quaye said government’s assurances to settle its indebtedness to the ECG has not yielded any positive result, adding the plan to put ECG under concession will not help the company.

He claimed  “previous governments tried this tactic but it did not benefit us as a nation, the government should therefore rescind its decision of private participation in ECG for 25 years because Ghanaians cannot afford to pay for their electricity,”.

He said “the concession will be characterized by job losses and its attendant on social impact on the economy, high tariffs, creating a virtual private monopoly in the energy distribution section.”

He called on the government to address the leadership problem by appointing dynamic and competent leaders with a fixed tenure of five years.

“We must raise funds from local sources either through the stock exchange or pension funds instead of borrowing from international money market to invest in the energy sector.”

Who is afraid of Charlotte Osei? – Tarzan asks

0

Charlotte-Charles

Gabby Otchere –Darko and I engaged in one of our irregular Twitter exchanges recently.  It was short and polite enough not to make social media headlines.

In response to my comment that “the EC could not give a toss whether this year’s election was held on Nov 7 or Dec 7”, Gabby wondered if I had become the unofficial Spokesman for the EC”, I responded that I accepted the position gratis if it would assist in telling Ghanaians the truth about the EC’s activities.

The trigger for the above exchange was the latest pronouncement on Election 2016 from the Danquah Institute [DI], a think tank founded but no longer fronted by Gabby.

Addressing a news conference on Thursday 2nd June, the current Executive Director of the DI, urged the minority in Parliament as follows: “In as much as the country appears to be desirous of and impatient for change, the Minority should not allow the EC to impose a November 7, 2016 date on us if it cannot convince the country that it has taken the necessary, legitimate, logical, efficient and impartial steps to give Ghanaians a clean register as ordered by the apex court of the land”

The November 7 date was pushed by the political party representatives (including the NPP) on the Electoral Reform Committee set up by the EC after the 2012 December elections. Like most reforms proposed by the political parties, the EC agreed to the November 7 date. Why is the EC being vilified for simply implementing a proposal made by the political parties?

From the date of her appointment there has been a ferocious and, dare I say it, obsessive attack on Charlotte Osei led by The New Statesman, Danquah Institute and Gabby Otchere-Darko, including in the infamous “A love letter from Gabby to Charlotte” penned in August 2015.  The actions of the three in one single source has acted as the catalyst for the irrational attacks on the EC chair since.

Here comes the punch line: “So far, the Charlotte-Osei-led electoral management body of Ghana has shown nothing but odd contempt at all efforts to address the issue of Ghana’s bloated register”.

The DI was making its latest fixation with Charlotte Osei, the Executive Chairperson of the EC, for it is this demonic woman who has supposedly and single-handedly thwarted every manouvre, fair or foul, to get what the DI and the many guises posing as ventriloquists for the NPP constitute a credible register for this year’s elections.

Even though the DI boss gave a very comprehensive historical account of what led to the suggestion for Nov 7 to be adopted, he still went on to make the absurd and inaccurate assertion that “the Minority should not allow the EC to impose a November 7, 2016 date on us”.

Alas his own account contradicts his assertion for the simple fact that the EC did not initiate the process, it was the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC): and, more crucially Charlotte Osei was appointed long after the process which resulted in a unanimous adoption of the Nov 7 date. So where from this ‘Charlotte Osei- led EC Imposition?

The ink had barely dried on the above effort to demonize the EC and its chairperson, when the General Secretary of the Christian Council, Rev Dr. Kwabena Opuni Frimpong, weighed in with a call on the Electoral Commission of Ghana “to do all it can to be transparent as that is the only way Ghanaians, as well as the world, can trust it and the credibility of the 2016 general elections”.

He suggested that “it will only take the openness of Madam Charlotte Osei and her commission to avert any doubt that may lead to another marathon court battle. “

Unfortunately the man of God did not anchor his charge on any factual or checkable evidence of Charlotte Osei’s supposed obfuscation with the EC’s preparation towards this year’s election. When you read between the lines, it was yet another voice asking the EC to adopt the so-called validation process for achieving a supposedly credible register for this year’s elections, as promoted by the NPP and totally rejected by the Supreme Court of Ghana on May 5, 2016.

Despite the court ruling and the EC’s constitutional status to conduct elections, the good Reverend opined “I want to hear EC do an independent assessment of the current voters’ roll and come out with concrete steps and solutions in ensuring that we have a credible voter’s document devoid of doubt; this will rest every argument as soon as all parties are satisfied”

Let me try to debunk the EC’s so-called lack of transparency with some verifiable facts to the contrary. The present EC has been the first in the 4Th Republic to publish a calendar setting out all of the major activities and scheduled dates right up to the presumed election date of November 7.

This timetable was presented to the IPAC meeting of 22nd  December 2015 and is available on the EC’s revamped website for anyone who cares to know facts from fiction. This Charlotte Osei led EC has also been the first to publish the minutes of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), which minutes are circulated and discussed by all who attend IPAC meetings.

I could go on and to list the firsts of the many steps the EC has taken towards making its preparations towards this year’s elections very transparent.  Rather than do that, I challenge all those who believe otherwise to offer verifiable evidence for their claims or forever hold their peace and not disturb the peaceful environment necessary for the elections and beyond.

In saying this, I separate the genuine differences of opinion about what the SC ordered unanimously on May 5, 2015. As everyone should know, I have publicly called for clarity on the judgment. You also know that, I announced I would be going to the SC to seek clarification on public interest grounds. Sadly, the best legal advice I have obtained indicates that I have no locus as I was not a party to the original suit and the matter is now decided.

The EC has interpreted the judgment as consistent with its already established process for cleaning the register to make it public. Alas contrary to the raging debate amongst legal luminaries about what the order means, I believe that it is now up to the plaintiff to carry out its intent to go back to the SC to get the clarification and other reliefs for the presumed intransigence of ‘the Charlotte Osei led EC’.

Ever since she assumed the position of Executive Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission on 1st July 2015, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, has been abused, pillared, harassed and subjected to many wild accusations about her suitability, competence and presumed political bias.

Who can forget the ridiculous photo-shopped image of her as a supposed NDC Parliamentary Candidate in  2008? or the bogus petition to the President to have her removed as Chairperson on  the ignorant grounds of her membership of the board of Ghana Reinsurance Company?

Instead of wasting so much capital on fighting and resisting her appointment, Mrs. Charlotte Osei is our current EC Chairperson. She is young enough to be in the position for the best part of the next 30 years.

She is qualified, assured and not easily ruffled or brow-beaten into submission into accepting positions that she believes are untenable and unlawful.  If she has to, she will seek to show leadership by trying to persuade her six  other colleagues, whip together with her make up the Commission, to deliberate and arrive at a conclusion that is consistent with the EC’s mandate and laws of Ghana.

It is both an insult to the other members of the EC and we the people of Ghana for anyone to seek to put sand in our eyes and suggest that Madam Charlotte Osei has been imposed as an inflexible dictator to ensure that the NDC wins the forthcoming 2016 Elections for the NDC.

Ironically, it is the persistence of this obsession and its inevitably doomed efforts to demonize her, instead of focusing on convincing Ghanaians that it is capable and ready to offer a real change for the better that may lose the NPP the next election.

I support the Electoral Commission of Ghana as I have done consistently since Dr. Afari-Gyan assumed the position of Chairman in 1994. Anyone who needs proof of this can find it in the opinions I have shared since 1993 to date. It is founded on the 1992 constitution that makes the EC independent of political party influence and direction in its duty to conduct public elections in Ghana.

As I have observed since the birth of the 4th Republic, the EC is always seen as being in the pocket of the incumbent government. But the same Opposition accepts the result of an EC-conducted poll when it wins.
And when it does, it accepts the processes that guide the EC work, including the appointment of new Commissioners when old ones retire. That was how Charlotte Osei was appointed, and we must all learn to embrace her appointment and work with her commission to deliver a free, fair, and above all credible election in 2016, whether on Nov 7 0r Dec 7.

Nana Addo needs to go back to Oxford – Otokunor

0

Nana Akuffo-Addo

The standard bearer of the main opposition party, Nana Ado Dankwa Akufo-Addo, may have taken a swipe at President John Dramani Mahama and his administration in faraway Italy, tagging the NDC government as being clueless and confused, but back home in Ghana the governing NDC is not taking kind to the description at all.

One of such incensed members of the National Democratic Congress is the Deputy Research Officer of the governing party, Peter Boamah Otokunor, who said Nana Addo needs to go back to Oxford University for more tutelage in governance and management.

According to the Deputy Research Officer of the NDC, who was responding to Nana Addo’s comment on news and current affairs program Ghana Dadwen on Onua 95.1FM, said the NPP flagbearer’s comments may have been directed at his party rather not the President John Dramani-led administration, asking how can a leader of a political party without a substantive National Chairman, General Secretary and 1st vice, have the effrontery to tag a ruling party that is doing everything possible to better the lives of Ghanaians.

“Asempa, I was surprised when I heard Nana Addo saying all that about our president, if there is any leader who is clueless, then it is him Nana Addo, not the performing President and his ministers. What messages has he (Nana) got for the electorates, if he does not understand those two words (referring to cluelessness and confused), then I advise him to go back to Oxford,” Otokunor told the host Bright Kwesi Asempa.

The 2016 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo whiles addressing a town hall meeting in Modena, Italy on Saturday on Day-2 of his visit to that country, noted that the unending social and economic crises that have hit Ghana is because the Mahama-led administration has over the last seven years proven to be corrupt, incompetent, indecisive and confused.

According to him President Mahama and his ministers of state are totally confused and clueless about the way the Ghanaian economy should be run, citing what he described as a conflicting explanation from both the President and his Minister of Finance over directives on the taxation of allowances and pensions.

He added that they are enough testaments of how Ghana has been run to the ground by a clueless government.

“President says one thing; the Finance a minister says another. So who is telling us the truth? Are we going with the Finance Minister or with the President? There is complete confusion in his government,” he told the gathering of mostly NPP members.

But Mr Otokunor averred that the three-time flag bearer of the NPP could not be solely blamed for his attempt to run the government down for political reasons but rather people like Gabby Otchere Darko and the rest of management members of the flagbearer.

“When you have people like Amfo Kwakye who is being penciled down to become the Chief of Staff for Nana Ado and Gabby Asare Otchere Darko managing and writing speeches for him, what do you expect Nana to say? Nothing. He will only go onto the tangent of attacking President Mahama in order to save face. I now seriously believe these people are not ready to rule this country.”

Enumerating achievements of President John Dramani Mahama, Otokunor, as he is popularly called, mentioned the newly commissioned Komenda Sugar Factory, the Eastern Corridor road project, and many other such projects, construction and refurbishment of health facilities across the country, building of 200 free SHS, and many other projects and policies being implemented in fulfilment of ‘Changing Lives and Transforming Ghana’ agenda.

He condemned Nana Addo and his destructive nature in diverting attentions.

“Yes can’t you see how he (Nana) is destroying the NPP, so if they are given the mandate, do you know what they will do to this country. He and his running mate are always talking about competence, but where is their competence when their party is tearing into pieces? They should first put their house in order then Ghanaians can take them seriously.”

Mahama the biggest disaster of ‘youthful’ president – Sammy Awuku

Prez Mahama

National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammy Awuku says President John Dramani Mahama has become an irony of a leader for Ghanaian youth having projected himself as a “youthful” president.

According to Mr Awuku, mismanagement of the Ghanaian economy has made President Mahama “the biggest disaster of a president for the youth of Ghana”.

At a press conference in Accra on Monday, June 6, the leader of NPP’s youth said youth of Ghana have regretted voting for the president “because not only has the President not delivered on his promises, he has actually killed the little hope that was there”.

He mentioned youth employment programmes such as GYEEDA and YES as policies taken advantage of by government to “steal” and “abuse” taxpayers’ money.

“As we head to the November 7th elections, we expect the NDC to start rolling out numerous ‘youth employment modules’, which again will create avenues for the NDC to steal money and distribute monies and freebies, as they did in 2012.”

He, therefore, called on the youth of Ghana to organize and mobilize for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, leader of his party.

Sammy Awuku listed posting anomalies of trained nurses and midwives, maltreatment of newly recruited teachers and the recent police recruitment, which generated GH¢1.7 million within three days, according to him, as evidence of the employment downturn.

“Mahama kills jobs! Mahama kills futures! Mahama is simply bad for the youth of Ghana.”
