Head of Human Security at the Presidency Brigadier-General (retd) Joseph Nunoo-Mensah has expressed desire to study law.

The septuagenarian says not even his age will stop him from acquiring further knowledge to become a lawyer.

Speaking on Onua FM’s Y3n S3mpa on Wednesday, June 1, the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) said studying law will help him in his fight against oppression of the poor and less-privileged in the country.

According to him, Ghana needs committed citizens to progress.

The retired army officer has engaged in philanthropic endeavours including the building of primary and senior high schools. He aided in the erection of the new O’Reilly SHS and Nsaba Presby SHS.

The Security Advisor to the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills says his law studies will highly likely take place in the United Kingdom, where he will travel to soon to meet fellow septuagenarians.

Brigadier-General Nunoo-Mensah, 77, condemned persons with the mindset of making money in politics.

“Then, you are in the wrong job. You are better off being an armed robber.”

Politics is about helping the less-privileged, he insisted.

Nunoo-Mensah lambasts Black Stars over winning bonuses

black stars

The current Black Stars players are greedy and do not have the nation at heart, retired army general Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah has said.

Brigadier-General Nunoo Mensah, who is the Head of the Human Security at the National Security, says the current crop of players are only playing to milk the nation unlike in the olden days when Dr. Kwame Nkrumah made sure the players played for nation from heart.

Brigadier-General (rtd) Nunoo-Mensah recalled how “former Black Star players such as Rev Osei Kofi, Kwame Adarkwa, Wilberforce Nfum, Aggrey Fynn among others were ready to die for Ghana”.

“That is why they were able to win in four consecutive times, 1963, 1965, 1978 and 1982 for the nation.”

He said these players played with patriotism “but today, young people are making money in football because today’s players are paid huge sums of money from the state coffers”.

The former National Security Advisor said: “Dr. Kwame Nkrumah will make you die for Ghana but today, nobody is ready to serve Ghana.

“They are only interested in money and that is killing the nation.”

Winning bonuses for each player of the Black Stars is currently $8,000, which is different from an appearance fee for a tournament.

Russia expands nuclear energy partnerships with African countries

Nuclear plant

The Russian Federation is rapidly expanding partnership with African countries on nuclear energy programmes, as demand for electricity grows in emerging economies.

Three African countries – Kenya, Nigeria and Zambia – are new to sign memorandum of understandings with Russia at the ATOMEXPO 2016 International Forum in Moscow, the largest meeting of world leaders and experts on nuclear power.

Nigeria’s cooperation with Russia is in the construction of a centre for nuclear science and technology in advance nuclear research.

“Nigeria does have other energy resources but we’re talking about a balanced and diversified energy basket and nuclear energy happens to be one that is considered. Again, I think it is environmentally friendly [and] will also lead to a better conservation of other resources,” noted Franklin Osaisai, Director-General of Nigerian Atomic Energy Commission.

The research centre is to support Nigeria in the use of nuclear for purposes of agriculture and medicine development, explained Sergey Kirienko, General Director of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM).

Kenya is also seeks cooperation in the sphere of uses of atomic energy for peaceful purposes.

“Everybody today is going green, so with us signing the MOU today will give us an opportunity, a window for us to interact more to know about what advantages are there,” said Hillary Ngondi Kyengo, Kenyan Ambassador in Russia.

Zambia is also signing an agreement in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Last year, Ghana signed a similar agreement, as part of countries increasingly looking for solutions to their energy deficits.

Nuclear is seen as a cleaner energy source and nuclear technologies are useful in industry, medicine and agriculture.

The partnerships often involve joint development of atomic energy infrastructure, design and construction of power and research nuclear reactors, as well as the exploration and production of uranium deposits.

Circle traders suspend business to commemorate June 3 disaster

0

June 3Traders at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, close to the June 3 Flood and Fire Disasters, have decided to stop all trading activities from Wednesday for three days.

This is to commemorate the one year anniversary of the disaster that claimed over 150 lives.

The traders, who sell along the Vienna-Odawna area, say they will organize a cleanup exercise to rid the place off filth especially plastic waste.

Speaking with 3 News, Andy Best, station manager of the Odawna Apawu Station, the venue, where the twin disaster happened said the move is to make the drainage there clean to allow free flow of water, to prevent flooding and another disaster, as the rains set in.

“We miss our fallen brothers, and in their memory, we want to stop all trading and remember them.

“We will use the day to mourn them and also clean this place. We believe that, our gutters must be clean and free to prevent any flooding, now that the rains are coming,” he explained.

Mr. Best said not enough has been done by government to forestall flood.

“After the incidence, we haven’t seen anything from government. So we have come up with our own measures. Any time we see the clouds gathering, we just pack up. We do not want a repeat of last year’s incident.”

In a related development, an art work of plastic of a man carrying a blackened person to signify the burnt body in front of the defunct GOIL filling station has been erected to remind the public of the souls that were perished that day.

The art work is also supposed to bring a flash back of the general shock of the tragedy and awaken the attitudinal change in the citizens of Accra.

Ghana’s problems are human issues – General Nunoo Mensah

0

Nunoo

Head of the Human Security at the National Security, Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo Mensah (retd) has reminded leaders that “all the problems we have in Ghana are human issues”.

He says “hunger, shelter/accommodation, employment among others are the basic needs of the people and they transform into insecurity if the citizens lack such basic needs”.

The former Chief of Defence Staff was speaking on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Kwame Karikari on Wednesday.

He explained that “unemployment creates crime but African leaders have turned deaf ears unto these basic principles”.

The former National Security advisor said “African leaders make me sad because leaders go into politics to make money even though leaders are to serve and to lead”.

Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah said “we are not progressing as a nation because we are not disciplined. Parents must train their children because education is not the only university”.

YOUTH AND DEVELOPMENT

He reminded the youth that “there is no peace anywhere. Everywhere is hot so the youth must not sit and think someone will build Ghana for us. We Ghanaians must build it ourselves”.

Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah advised that “youth must struggle to gain what they want; but today, the youth don’t want to struggle. They want to make quick money”.

HOT KITCHEN

A few years ago he retorted agitated workers demanding better condition of service that “if the kitchen is too hot for you, get out”.

After that controversial refrain, General Nunoo Mensah said “President Mahama sent someone to tell me to cease fire after I made that comment and I stand by that comment 100%”.

He said workers go on strike without thinking of the nation, blamed both government and workers for the frequent unnecessary strikes.

He explained that “when you talk, they don’t listen that is why the nation is like this. We are not progressing”.

JUSAG calls off strike

0

Supreme Court

The Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) on Wednesday called off its 11-day-old strike.

JUSAG declared strike on Friday, May 20 over their consolidated salaries, a grievance they claimed has been on government’s negotiating table since last year.

The strike brought activities of the judicial service to a halt. A number of court cases have had to be postponed because there were no judicial service workers to supervise activities at the court.

The striking workers were scheduled to resume negotiations on Wednesday, June 1, for further instruction on the wayforward.

But at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, JUSAG President Alex Nartey indicated that the leadership has made progress in getting their request met.

He explained that a framework has been concluded with the Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Haruna Iddrisu to have their concerns addressed.

He therefore called on all JUSAG members to resume work immediately as negotiation continues.

“It has become necessary to appeal to all members of the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana and workers of the judicial service to resume work immediately,” he announced.

Fuel prices to go up by 3% from Wednesday

0

fuelPrices of petroleum products are to go up by three percent at the pump from Wednesday, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana has hinted.

The marginal increment is prompted by the rise of crude oil prices on the international market which has been influenced by the rising demand for crude oil from mostly developing countries, Onua FM has gathered.

“There will be between two to three percent increase in prices of petrol and diesel at the pump tomorrow [Wednesday],” Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana, Duncan Amoah, told Onua FM.

He added: “It is not expected that transport fares will go up. Though there is an upcoming window for review of transports fares, the increase in prices petroleum products are not that significant to automatically result in an increase in transport fares,”

Mr Amoah noted there are indications that prices of crude oil on the international market would go up soon.

He said the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) are meeting this week to reach a decision  on a possible cut down on the volume of oil sold on the market, noting “the index are prompting another rise in international price for crude oil if OPEC endorses this decision.”

Mr Alex Nartey (L), President of JUSAG

Members of the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana have vowed to continue with their strike until government gives them a definite date for the implementation of their consolidated salary.

According to the Association, the government has failed to give firm a date to implement the new consolidated salary scheme which has been approved by the Judicial Council for payment by the government for the past year.

At an emergency national executive committee meeting Tuesday, the leadership of the group said they were not satisfied with the government’s response in resolving the matter that led to the declaration of strike on May 20.

The Association also said it has identified some key issues which it is expecting the government to resolve quickly but declined to say what those issues are.

President of the association, Alex Nartey, said they want the government to be clear on when the 32 directors of the Judicial Service will be paid.

No show in court

Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission on Tuesday failed to appear in court for the hearing of an application seeking to compel members of the Association to call off the strike.

When the case was called, lawyers for the Commission were absent. Members of JUSSAG and their lawyers were however present.

Executive Secretary of the National Labour Commission, Charles Bawaduah, later explained the Commission failed to appear in court because it was awaiting on the leadership of the Association to call off the strike.

He said if JUSSAG had called off its strike, it would have filed a motion to withdraw the case from court.

He said in view of the development, they will seek another date from the court registry for the case to be gone into

3FM introduces new programme ‘Beatz Africa’

0

beatsafrica
3FM 92.7 has introduced a refreshing Sunday afternoon musical programme dubbed Beatz Africa designed to celebrate the African continent and its rich musical culture.

Beatz Africa first aired on Sunday, May 29 on 3FM with the regular host of the mid-morning show Urban Blend, Miriam Osei Agyemang, who thrills listeners with soothing African music from across the continent.

Highlighting on what listeners should be expecting from her as she takes over the airwaves every Sunday between the hours of 3pm and 5pm, Miriam emphasized the importance of African music in the society and stated that Beatz Africa is designed to bring African nationals living in Ghana together.

“Beatz Africa is a two-hour show on 3FM and a musical show with a difference in the sense that we noticed that music from Africa is crossing boundaries and at a fast pace particularly Beatz Africa and that is because it’s more urban and youthful and what better way to celebrate the continent in its rich musical culture than to create a show that will become a world stage for Afro Beat and so that’s how come there’s Beatz Africa.

“What Beatz Africa will do is to unite the African continent through music so on a typical show, we will play a mix of different Afro beats from different parts of Africa and we will intersperse it with some profiles of about three countries. So, we will pick say Nigeria and do a profile of Nigeria and then speak to Nigerians in Ghana to sell Nigeria to us from their opinion or their perspective and then we will have a Top 10 trending of latest Afro Beatz on the continent and then also we are using this as a platform to bring together as many African nationals in Ghana.”

Miriam further went on to lay emphasis on 3FM’s mid morning show Urban Blend describing it as a ‘feel good’ show.

“I call the Urban Blend a mid morning companion and it’s the kind of show that gives you the energy to work when you are in your office or when you are going about your normal activities between the hours of 10am – 2pm.

“It’s two shows put into one because from 12pm – 2pm, we call it the Midday Flavor which is a mid tempo kind of a show and so after we’ve kept you going on high energy music from 10am – 12pm, we now let you settle in and prepare to let you wrap up your day with mellow soothing songs from 12pm – 2pm.

“Aside the music, we inform, we talk about lifestyle related issues and we pick on topical issues and make it more of a social topic . For instance we will talk about how to save money, how to ensure unity in your office, social institutions and stuff like that.

“It’s a feel good show for the one who is urban and one who is contemporary as well as one who appreciates music”.

Why men always underestimate their partner’s libido

0

libido

While husbands may complain of being brushed off with a gentle ‘not tonight dear’, their wives actually want to have sex far more often than they realise, a study has revealed.

A team of researchers found that men in long-term relationships often underestimate how often their wives or girlfriends are in the mood.

Scientists think men tend not to initiate sex on some nights when their partner actually is open to the idea – because they are trying to avoid the possibility of sexual rejection, which could leave them feeling upset or resentful.

By assuming their partner isn’t interested, and therefore not initiating sex, the men are able to avoid this sense of disappointment. But in fact, according to the research, women in long-term relationships or marriages are open to having sex on many more nights than their partners realise.

However on occasions when women are open to the possibility of having sex, they will not necessarily take the initiative – and so their partners could simply fall asleep without realising they have missed their opportunity.

The research, carried out by psychologists at the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario in Canada, was published earlier this month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. It consists of three separate studies, following 229 long-term couples, most of whom were heterosexual, ranging in age from 18 to 68 years old.

The couples had been together for around six years on average, and said they tended to have sex once or twice a week on average.

In the first study, couples kept a diary for three weeks reporting their level of sexual desire each day, as well as their perception of their partner’s level of desire and their level of relationship satisfaction.

The second study saw couples record their levels of desire as well as their perception of their partner’s levels of desire.

In the third and final study, 101 couples kept a diary over the course of three weeks, making notes on the same issues. They were also asked to record each day how motivated they were to avoid sexual rejection.

All three studies showed that men consistently underestimated their female partner’s sexual desire – with scientists suggesting this was because they were attempting to avoid rejection.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, women were able to far more accurately predict whether or not their partner was interested in sex. They also reported being more satisfied in the relationship than their partner believed they were.

Previously, studies have claimed that men tend to perceive greater sexual interest in women’s behaviour than actually exists, known as ‘sexual over-perception bias’.

However, researchers have only ever tested this effect in the context of men’s early encounters with women. The latest study is the first to examine how people perceive their partner’s sexual desire in long-term relationships.

The findings show that, unlike during first encounters, men in long-term relationships actually demonstrate an ‘under-perception bias’. Researcher Dr Kristen Mark said: ‘The assumption that women are going to be the lower-desire partner needs to be thrown out.’

Parliament urged to pass ‘GMO’ bill

0

gmo

Parliament has been urged to pass the Plant Breeders Bill to protect intellectual property for food security.

Former Head of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Professor Walter Sandow Alhassan explained that concerns on the bill have nothing to do with genetic modifications given the fact that they are not dangerous as perceived.

He added that we should rather be more concerned with pesticide residue on food crops which are more dangerous and pose a health risk to humans upon consumption.

With change in climate and continuous post-harvest loss in recent times, scientists believe there is an urgent need to improve on crop assertions and crop resistance against droughts and diseases.

At Bonsu in the East Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region, Professor Walter Alhassan shared with residents reasons why Parliament must pass the Plant Breeders Bill urgently, launching the global status of biotech.

He said there was the need to strengthen regulatory agencies on food while more investment in research is taken up seriously in order to meet global changing trends and safeguard against food security.

Dr. Lawreance Aboagye, who heads the Plant Genetic Resources Research Institute (PGRRI), explained that efforts at collection and preserving of crop assertions have not been devoid of challenges.

He allayed fears on food security, but pointed out that food security wasn’t just about the production and processing of food but more critically the nutritional values as well.

Professor Kenneth Danso of the Biotechnology and Nuclear Agriculture Research Institute (BNARI) under the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) emphasized there was the need to deal with crop assertions rather than the usual inputs for farmers.

He cautioned against the perception of force ripening of fruits and other crops suggesting they were the results of genetic manipulation.

The country has permits on two Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) crops, cowpea and rice, which are currently undergoing field trials from donor funding.
