I’m done with comedy – David Oscar

0

David Oscar

Stand-up comedian David Oscar can now be rightly be referred to as a former comedian after reiterating that his passion has shifted to music.

He, however, says he did not abandon comedy because of failure in that industry, as his critics have suggested.

David Oscar, who came into the limelight after exhibiting his humorous character on the defunct Stars of the Future reality show, has announced his entry into the music scene.

Oscar’s time in comedy could have been described as rocky with many criticizing his jokes as not funny.

As a result, his new love for music has been described by critics as a clear admission of failure in comedy.

Speaking on 3FM’s mid morning show ‘Urban Blend’ hosted by Miriam Agyemang, the former stand-up comedian said: “I’m a music artiste and I declared on a different platform that I am done with comedy and I think a lot of people missed that.

“It gets to a point where you cannot express certain experiences and certain feelings you have cannot be expressed comedically and being an artiste I’m always in constant search for ways to express myself and I think that music came in at the right time.

“I think that I came in at a time to play my role and if you were to measure the success of GH comedy based on the role that some of us played, it has been very successful so I wonder why anybody would think that I am failed comedian that is why am doing music.

“Those who liked me liked me for my comedy and those who hated me hated me for my comedy”.

Reggae music

Oscar noted that he takes inspiration from artistes like Morgan Heritage, Bob Marley, and Peter Tosh as he embarks on his new artistic journey.

“Most of my songs are all reggae songs including the ones you haven’t heard and my biggest inspiration is reggae music.

“I think that I probably don’t listen to any other kind of music apart from reggae and it’s because of the message.

“It’s the message that I carry which I want to share and apart from my personal orientation which I don’t want to talk about but it gives me a very good outlet be able to share my story truthfully with my audience”.

MzVee: My mum will kill me if I drop out of school

Female dancehall artiste and composer MzVee says her mum will “kill” her if she drops out of school.

MzVee had earlier last week announced that she is abandoning schooling at the Ghana Telecom University College in Accra and enrolling on an online course to complete her education.

She said her reasons for taking that decision is that lecturers mark her down as they assume she does not have enough time for her education because of her career.

In an exclusive interview with TV3’s Adwoa Amorfa, the ‘Natural Girl’ hitmaker said she decided to switch schools to lessen her workload and stated that her mother will kill her if she does not finish her education.

“I’m not dropping out of school but I only want to lessen my work load as going to school and doing the music is really difficult.

“I’m still going to finish and get my degree so I am doing this online course so I can have time to do my studio work and also work whiles I travel and most importantly don’t get marked down for not attending lectures.”

She advised the youth to take education seriously to enable them find better opportunities in the future.

“Education is very important as I am here forcing people to go to school by doing a whole scholarship thing for them to go to school.

“I say it’s important because I am the kind of person who would like to manage my own business in future so I need general knowledge about business.

“It’s very easy to throw school away and just do music but I want that extra thing added to me so I am just going to finish school.

“There is no way I would have worked with the World Bank and gone to give speeches and stuff like that if I hadn’t gone to school.

“My mum will kill me by the way if I don’t finish school and I don’t want to disappoint her because she has really supported me right from the start so I need to do this for myself and for her.”

Mahama to blame for delay in my suit against EC – Ramadan

President Mahama must pay JUSAG members so they can resume work for me to file my suit, Abu Ramadan demands

Former Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Abu Ramadan is faulting President John Dramani Mahama for the delay in him filing a contempt suit against the Electoral Commission of Ghana over the interpretation on the May 5 judgement of the Supreme Court.

One of the plaintiffs in the landmark case, Mr Ramadan resolved to sue the Commission after it interpreted the judgement as affirming its autonomy and the status quo regarding the cleaning of the register.

On Thursday, May 26, however, one of the justices of the Supreme Court, Jones Dotse, explained that the judgement was “forthright” and “clear”, asking the Commission to remove names of NHIS-registrants and immediately giving them opportunity to re-register.

Though the Commission is yet to react to this seeming clarification from the Supreme Court justice, Mr Ramadan says he is waiting for the suspension of the strike by the Judicial Services Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) for him to head to the courts to cite the EC.

“My humble appeal since yesterday has been on the president to pay judicial workers [and] to take steps in resolving the problem between himself and the judicial staff,” he said on News @10 on Thursday.

He also asked the Chair of the EC, Charlotte Osei, to presume on the industrial action to comply with the Supreme Court ruling to avert him taking the legal action.

“I am hoping before the judicial workers resume their normal duties and call off the strike, she will find wisdom in implementing fully the orders of the court so that we don’t have another legal tussle on our hands.”

The workers declared strike on Friday, May 20 and have been holding discussions with the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations on the resolution of their grievances.

“As long they remain home, we don’t have the opportunity to file our suit.”

Sissala West

Asked about his motivation in filing the landmark suit in the first place, Mr Ramadan revealed how his party was frustrated by the parliamentary elections in the Sissala West Constituency in 2012.

According to him, many Burkinabes mysteriously with National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards thronged the Constituency, the home constituency of PNC’s founder, to vote.

The then DCE was plain by saying those voters were not whites but black Africans, he said.

“And you ask yourself, are we having an African election? We are not electing an AU president or ECOWAS president. We are electing president of Ghana.”

But for that, Mr Ramadan maintained, the PNC would have won the seat.

“If the register is clean and we regularise the register and make it such that we have only Ghanaians on the rergister [that will be] the true reflection. Because there [are] presidents who have come and gone and I believe Limann’s legacy will continue to live on and Limann’s name will never die. The people of Sissala know what Limann did for them.”

NDC distances itself from Amaliba’s attack on Justice Dotse

0

Abraham Amaliba

The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has distanced itself from comments made by a leading member of its legal team, Abraham Amaliba.

A Deputy General Secretary of the party, Mr. Koku Anyidoho, said Mr. Amaliba’s comments are entirely his and do not reflect the position of the governing party.

Hours after a Supreme Court judge Justice Jones Dotse granted a rare interview clarifying a recent judgment of the apex court which divided opinion, Mr. Amaliba spoke to Joy News condemning the eminent judge.

Justice Dotse’s comments were in respect of varying interpretations given to the Supreme Court’s judgment on a case brought against the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Attorney-General by a former Youth Organizer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan and one Evans Nimako.

The Court asked the EC to delete from the electoral roll names of persons who used National Health Insurance cards as proof of citizenship to register to vote.

The Electoral Commission interpreted the judgment of the court as not ordering it to delete names of persons who registered with the outlawed cards.

The EC’s interpretation was countered by the lawyer of the plaintiffs, Nana Asante Bedietuo who said the ruling of the court was for the EC to clean the register of NHIS carders.

Clarifying the judgment, Justice Jones Dotse disclosed on May 26 that the court’s ruling asked the EC to delete names of persons with NHIS carders from the register.

His comment did not sit well with Mr Amaliba who claimed the judge has brought the name of the Supreme Court into disrepute.

He told Joy News’ Evans Mensah on Top Story, Thursday, May 26 that “it is unethical for a judge to come out in the open to discuss his own judgment.”

Mr. Amaliba said the judge spoke like a “political commentator” and his views cannot overrule that of the entire court.

But in a swift reaction, Mr Anyidoho said the NDC does not share the views expressed by Mr Amaliba.

He said the NDC has gained greater understanding in “what the learned Justice [Dotse] of the Supreme Court said” and have learned something from it.

According to him, Justice Dotse only “went on to reiterate the position of his colleagues in the Supreme Court.”

Meanwhile, one of the plaintiffs, Abu Ramadan has indicated he will be heading back to court to seek an enforcement of the court’s orders.

Confusion at Krofuom as police brutality leads to man’s death

police

The Ashanti regional town of Krofuom is in turmoil after a young man in his early 20s was allegedly brutalized to death Thursday evening by the police.

Osei Tawaih was returning from a public toilet when the police patrol team pursuing two criminals on a motorbike mistook him for one of the criminals, and subjected him to serious beatings until he became unconscious and died.

According to eyewitnesses, not even a plea of innocence from the residents and the young man’s foster mother could restrain the police from using their taser and gun butts on him.

Krofuom

The mother told Joy FM, the son returned from town to leave his backpack at home to attend nature’s call.

Only to be informed later that he has been mistaken for a criminal and allegedly killed by the police.

The body of the deceased was later dumped at the Manhyia Government Hospital by the police without going through the necessary paper works.

Angered by the gruesome murder, residents of Krofuom poured onto the streets Friday morning to protest the action of the police.

They burnt car tyres and blocked some key roads as their anger swells.

The residents numbering over 300 are demanding justice for Osei Tawiah, and do not want to have the police presence in the area until their demand is met.

They are therefore calling on the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye to live up to his accolade as a productive police officer by bringing his men to book.
