The Ashanti regional town of Krofuom is in turmoil after a young man in his early 20s was allegedly brutalized to death Thursday evening by the police.

Osei Tawaih was returning from a public toilet when the police patrol team pursuing two criminals on a motorbike mistook him for one of the criminals, and subjected him to serious beatings until he became unconscious and died.

According to eyewitnesses, not even a plea of innocence from the residents and the young man’s foster mother could restrain the police from using their taser and gun butts on him.

The mother told Joy FM, the son returned from town to leave his backpack at home to attend nature’s call.

Only to be informed later that he has been mistaken for a criminal and allegedly killed by the police.

The body of the deceased was later dumped at the Manhyia Government Hospital by the police without going through the necessary paper works.

Angered by the gruesome murder, residents of Krofuom poured onto the streets Friday morning to protest the action of the police.

They burnt car tyres and blocked some key roads as their anger swells.

The residents numbering over 300 are demanding justice for Osei Tawiah, and do not want to have the police presence in the area until their demand is met.

They are therefore calling on the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye to live up to his accolade as a productive police officer by bringing his men to book.
