Popular Nigerian singer, Rema has emerged as the inaugural recipient of the “Best Afrobeats” award at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards.
It would be recalled that the event organizers introduced a new category named “Best Afrobeats” for the 2023 ceremony.
The initial nominees included French superstar Aya Nakamura, alongside Nigerian artists Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema.
Even though the award ceremony was cancelled due to the Israel-Hamas conflict, the winners were still announced on Sunday, November 6, 2023.
Rema was declared the winner of the “Best Afrobeats” category, while Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz received the award for “Best African Act.”
In the “Best Collaboration” category, Rema and Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” did not secure the win, losing to Jung Kook and Latto’s “Seven.”
Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy missed out on three awards, including “Best Afrobeats,” “Best African Act,” and “Best Live Performer.”
This happened shortly after he lost all seven nominations at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.
American singer Taylor Swift led the list of winners with three awards at the 2023 MTV EMAs, receiving honours for “Best Video,” “Best Artist,” and “Best Live.”
Nigerian singer and label boss, Abdulazeez Fashola, better known as Naira Marley, and Lagos socialite, Samson Eletu, better known as Sam Larry, have been granted bail by a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State after the magistrate had ordered the remand of Naira Marley and Sam Larry in police custody for 21 days over the death of 27-year-old Nigerian singer Mohbad, who died earlier in September.
They, however, have to provide three sureties with a sum of N20 million (GH₵297,134.63) to process their release.
The magistrate, Adeola Olatunbosun told the defendants to submit their passports and ordered that they are to report weekly to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti.
In her ruling, Olatunbosun stated: “As part of the bail conditions, the defendants are to surrender their passports and make weekly appearances at the State Criminal Investigation Department.”
The duo had filed a fundamental rights suit to challenge their continued detention over the death of Mohbad.
Joined as defendants in the suit filed before the Federal High Court in Lagos were the police and the Lagos magistrate, Adeola Olatunbosun, who ordered their remand in police custody for 21 days.
Naira Marley and Sam Larry each demanded N20m damages from the defendants.
In the suit filed through their lawyer, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), they are urging the court to declare that the continued detention “at the Homicide Section of the Lagos State Police Command, Panti, Yaba, Lagos State since October 4, 2023,” constituted a violation of their rights.
It would be recalled that Naira Marely and Sam Larry had been arrested upon their return to the country after they were linked to the death of late singer, Mohbad.
A video which showed Sam Larry trying to assault Mohbad while he was on set spurred more speculation as to his alleged involvement in the death.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president of Ghana, has won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary, setting him up for a showdown with former president and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 general election.
Dr Bawumia defeated a field of three other candidates, including Kennedy Agyapong, the outspoken Assin Central MP, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former Minister for Agriculture and former Mampong MP, Francis Addai-Nimoh.
Certified results announced by a deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, revealed that Dr Bawumia polled 118210 votes representing 61.47% while his closest contender Mr Agyapong polled 71,996 votes representing 37.41%.
Dr. Afriyie Akoto who placed a distant third polled 1,459 votes representing 0.76% while Addai-Nimoh garnered a meagre 731 representing 0.41%.
A total of 192 446 delegates voted in Saturday’s presidential primary. The total valid votes were 193, 346 with 900 votes rejected. Turn out was 94.63%.
Bawumia was predicted from the start to win the presidential primary but he, however, failed to meet the target of 80% set by members of his campaign team.
Several MPs and Ministers threw their support behind Dr Bawumia who is a popular figure within the NPP.
Dr Bawumia makes history by becoming the first non-Akan to lead the NPP into a general election after being the running mate to President Akufo-Addo since 2008.
The 2024 election is expected to be a close contest. Both Bawumia and Mahama are strong candidates, and they both have their strengths and weaknesses.
The outcome of the election will likely depend on several factors, including the state of the economy, the candidates’ campaigns, and the turnout of voters.

Aaron Amoah Adepa, better known as Okomfuor Black, the first biological son of the celebrated hiplife artiste, Mzbel has caused massive stir online.
According to him, he’s a traditionalist, pours libation and doesn’t believe in God.
In a recent conversation with Obi TV, he sighted what he claims to be contradictions in the supernatural realm citing science as a reason all such are in place.
Adepa made a bold statement that he wasn’t created by God but by his mother because it’s his mother who takes care of him.
“I believe through science that human beings were created and not born and as such, I never got to see God as my father or my mother” he said.
The 10-year-old boy added that he pours libations to his ancestors which baffled the host and went to state that Jesus Christ did not come to die for our sins stating a controversial reason.
He called the thoughts of hell stupidity as according to him, it doesn’t make sense to create a hellhole for sinners when you can easily erase sin as the almighty.

Outspoken Entertainment critic Sally Mann has attacked netizens for waging war against Maxwell Mensah, Nana Ama McBrown’s husband.
As rumours of McBrown’s husband’s infidelity heightened, he faced all sorts of backlashes for what has been described as not acknowledging the kind of wife he has.
In tons of videos making waves online, some netizens wondered why Mr. Maxwell Mensah would cheat on a ‘superwoman’ like McBrown, who they perceive is way out of his league.
But Sally Mann has frowned at this development.
In a discussion with Power FM, Sally has labelled individuals parading such assertions as gullible and unwise.
She has warned such people against projecting McBrown as more important and better than her husband.
“A lot of people are saying all sorts about this issue,” she said. “It has gotten to the point that some people are saying that the man doesn’t deserve her. Fools! That’s not what the Bible says. Those people are foolish. God has joined people together and fans are making unnecessary comparisons. Sitting in the comfort of their homes and identifying who among the couple is better than the other. When Maxwell was toasting Nana Ama McBrown, where were these social media sagging breast aunties?”
She continued: “It is their marriage and if you don’t have a solution for them, shut up! People should stop projecting Nana Ama McBrown over her husband. Stop making her look better than her husband. Nana Ama McBrown is not better than Maxwell. If he is engaging in extra marital affair, who are you to be talking about it? Stop insulting the man who honoured McBrown, it is as a result of this honour that a lot of brands now work with McBrown.”
Sally also said an old video of her labelling McBrown as a good wife, which is currently circulating on social media, was taken out of contest.
“This week, someone sent me a video of myself nine months ago, saying McBrown was a good wife,” she said. “The time I made those statements was around the exact time I was criticizing her for dressing like a Hollywood star when she had not even gotten anywhere close. It was around the exact time I spoke about her liposuction procedure. But as gullible and shallow minded some Ghanaians are, they are focusing on the part where I praised her for being a good wife. Such nonsense individuals. When people make statements, you want to pick the part that suits you and leave the important ones.”
Nana Ama McBrown has been in the spotlight recently due to the tumultuous events surrounding her marriage, which have garnered considerable attention from the public and the media. Odehyie Selly’s song is a powerful message of encouragement, urging Nana Ama McBrown to remain resolute in the face of the controversy that has surrounded her in recent days.
The song not only celebrates the positive impact that Nana Ama McBrown has had on the entertainment industry and the nation as a whole but also serves as a reminder of her inner strength and resilience. It sends a clear message that she should not allow herself to be broken or disheartened by the rumors and speculations that have circulated in both social and traditional media.
Odehyie Selly’s musical tribute is a touching demonstration of support and solidarity, highlighting the importance of standing by a beloved public figure during trying times.
This heartfelt composition is a testament to the power of music in conveying messages of encouragement, hope, and resilience, and it is a beautiful way to acknowledge Nana Ama McBrown’s enduring influence and strength in the face of adversity.

As part of the rollout, Mr Eazi has been inviting the public to experience the music alongside the art at multi-sensory exhibition listening experiences, with the first two taking place in Accra, Ghana at Gallery 1957, and in the U.K. during the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, from October 12-15, at Somerset House in London.

A dispute arose after Prempeh College raised objections to the riddle during the semi-final contest, citing that their contestant’s answer, “principle of superposition,” deserved full marks.
They argued that this principle was the same as the “principle of linear superposition” mentioned in the contest as the answer.
Responding to Prempeh College, the organizers of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Primetime Limited, have affirmed their decision not to award any marks to Prempeh College for the answer they provided in a riddle during the 2023 semi-final contest between Opoku Ware and Pope John Seminary School.
This follows a protest initiated by Prempeh College, requesting a review of the result and the awarding of the required marks for their answer.
In a letter addressed to Prempeh College, Primetime Limited stated that they had thoroughly reviewed the matter, including discussions with their physics consultant and the Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, and after careful consideration, the organizers concluded that there was no error in the initial decision made during the competition.
“The Quiz Mistress exercises discretion on whether an answer provided by a contestant is sufficiently responsive and would have accepted the answer given by the Prempeh College contestants if, in her professional opinion, the target key and the answer given by the contestants were synonymous.
“She did not in this case, opting instead to maintain the more precise original key. When the complaint came to the attention of the Physics consultant, full consideration was given to all the issues raised, and the protesters, after receiving complete attention, were satisfied with the explanation and counterexample that were given by the consultant.
“The Quiz Mistress’s ruling is affirmed,” part of the statement read.
Grammy award-winning American singer cum songwriter, Taylor Swift has officially become a billionaire, making her the first singer to enter the billionaire’s club solely through music, according to a new report by Bloomberg.
The Pop superstar did it again as the first-ever singer to enter the billionaire’s club with profits from music alone. The singer hit the milestone thanks to the phenomenal success of her ‘Eras Tour’, her concert film, the value of her new music and the re-release of her earlier studio albums.
Bloomberg, in its report, listed Swift among the ranks of fellow billionaire artists Rihanna and Jay-Z. According to the report, an in-depth analysis of Swift’s finances reveals she made her 10-figure fortune “almost entirely from her music.”
It must be noted that Rihanna achieved her billionaire status from revenue that came in through her beauty and clothing lines. Jay-Z, on the other hand, made his fortune through a series of investments, businesses and various other endeavours not pertaining to the music industry.
According to Bloomberg, Swift now has an estimated net worth of a whopping $1.1 billion.
This number came from an analysis of her music catalogue, merch sales, tour revenue and more. She reportedly made $400 million from music releases since 2019. She also earned an impressive $370 million from ticket and merchandise sales.
Her other sources of income include $120 million from Spotify and YouTube earnings and an additional $80 million from royalties from her music sales. The remaining $110 million is the current value of her five personal properties.
Also, Taylor’s ticket sales from her 53 North American concerts generated ticket sales of over $2.2 billion.
Bloomberg Economics estimates that in total, the tour has added $4.3 billion to the country’s gross domestic product.
Prior to the tour that kicked off in June, Forbes featured Taylor Swift on their list of self-made women in America, with a net worth of $740 million.
According to the report, Swift’s fame and fortune is only expected to grow as she takes her tour to South America at the end of this year. She is also scheduled to perform in Asia, Australia and Europe in 2024.
