“I’m human and I’m not perfect” – Shatta Wale subtly apologize to Kwame Despite, Fada Dickson as he marks his birthday

0

Multiple award-winning reggae-dancehall crooner Charles Nii Armah Mensah, famously known as Shatta Wale has shown remorse for his unethical behaviour on the internet these past weeks.

In a post sighted on his Facebook page, ‘On God’ crooner made a seemingly apologetic post citing the fact that he’s human and as such isn’t perfect.

“I have been thru the worst things but I trod on because of my belief in the most high God and that spirit has made me realize the most precious gift we have in this world ..” he added.

Shatta Wale recently lambasted popular media personality Kwasi Aboagye for disputing his claim that he was paid £80,000 for his performance at the Taabea Ghana Music Awards UK few weeks ago.

Kwesi Aboagye suggested that the £80,000 figure for Shatta Wale was an exaggeration, which couldn’t sit well with the dancehall performer.

Shatta Wale, while maintaining that he indeed received the stated amount, took to TikTok Live to issue threats against the broadcaster.

At one point, he directed his frustrations towards Kwasi Aboagye’s employers, Fada Dickson and Osei Kwame Despite, saying, “Kwasi Aboagye, if you’re not dismissed from Peace FM… you, Despite, and Fada Dickson are all acting foolish.

Fans think Shatta Wale is using his birthday as an opportunity to right all wrongs done to other industry folks going forward. He’s also set to release his most anticipated ‘Incoming’ record which features Tekno Miles from Nigeria off his ‘Konekt’ album.

Mother of Kikibees CEO breaks silence about his demise

0

Cecilia Adomah, mother of Kikibees CEO has kicked against claims that her son either committed suicide or died from the influence of drugs.

According to the bereaved mother, her son is nothing like the bad image that is been painted out there by the police.

In an interview with Bigscout media, Mrs. Cecilia Adomah said her son is a successful, young, and responsible businessman who would have no reason whatsoever to commit suicide or put his life in jeopardy.

She said her son, perhaps, met his untimely death because he trusts easily.

Recalling the last time she set eyes on him, Madam Cecilia Adomah, who resides in Amsterdam, said her son paid a visit to her, a week before meeting his untimely death in Ghana.

“My son Ben that I know isn’t a drug addict. He isn’t a drug addict. Jesus Christ! Ben came to visit me and spent a week here in Amsterdam, before leaving for Ghana, he even hugged me, kissed me and we prayed together. He left here around 1 am. He said he would be back soon and he left. It was his friend who even came to pick him up.

“When I heard reports that my son committed suicide, I was intrigued. This information is false. Why would Ben even want to kill himself? He is a responsible man with a wife and kids. He is hardworking and successful. So, what is he looking for in life that he doesn’t have? I was shocked. My son is very sobber, loves human, and trust easily, maybe that’s what landed us in this situation.

She also recounted the interesting manner in which some outsiders tried to break the news of her son’s death to her in church.

“I heard it when I was in church on Sunday, a lady called me on the phone to tell me about it. Exactly around that time, my daughter’s friends were around so they quickly snatched the phone from me.

“Other people came to tell me that Ben is injured so he is receiving treatment. At that moment, I was taken to home but I kept asking why about four people would tell me about a mere injury. So I asked them to tell me exactly what happened. So, the family came home and they told me that he was dead,” she added.

Ben’s younger brother, who sat next to his mother, insists that his mother was assassinated.

“For someone who took in substance and was hyper, why didn’t he knock anyone down with his car? Went all there way to someone’s house to kill himself. From the audio, you can tell that it is a well-calculated plot to assassinate my brother.

“You said someone is hyper and wants to kill you, so why didn’t you open the door for him to go out? From the audio, you can tell that they did something to him and he was gasping for breath,” he fumed.

Police reportedly presents findings in court

Earlier, a police report contained that Ben, prior to visiting his girlfriend on the night he died, took in some substances and became hyperactive, a situation which resulted in an altercation and destruction of property upon reaching her residence.

The reports further disclosed that at some point, Ben’s girlfriend had to maneuver her way out of the scene, because he threatened to kill her.

The police said Ben was found on the floor with marks on his arms and blood oozing out of his nose, a development which seemed as though he slumped and fell.

Kikibees CEO’s girlfriend arrested and charged with murder

Mam Yandey Joof, girlfriend of the late Bennet Agyekum-Adoma, owner of Kikibees Restaurant and Lounge, has been remanded into police custody by a District Court in Madina.

Her plea has been reserved by the court presided over by Justice Susana Nyakotey.

Muniru Kassim, the lawyer who represented the accused person (Mam Yandey Joof), said she had no hand in the death of the Kikibees CEO and that at the right time, the truth would prevail.

Sister Deborah’s silent activism in the humanitarian field

0

Ghanaian-Romanian television presenter, musician and model Deborah Owusu-Bonsu better known by her stage name as Sister Derby or Sister Deborah, has been quietly making a significant impact in charitable interventions.

While she has achieved fame for her striking appearances, music videos and live performances, it is her love, compassion and empathy for vulnerable children, marginalised groups of people and the environment that set her apart.

One of her most recent charitable activities was donating food items for the Easter Monday party at the Street Academy behind the Art Centre in Accra. For the past five years or so, the African Mermaid has been feeding the students of the Street Academy on special occasions, such as Easter Monday. Many at times, mothers, siblings and the elderly in the community are also fed, numbering about 600 people.

The food served on these occasions is freshly cooked with local ingredients and served in clean leaves. The African Mermaid foundation (T.A.M.) creates awareness about the need to reduce the use of plastics, thus they try to educate and inculcate the habit of using leaves and brown paper for packaging.

At the grounds, Victoria buckets with soap and water are provided for all to wash their hands before and after eating. Dustbins are also provided to ensure that the rubbish is disposed of properly. This way, the children are taught good manners and personal hygiene.

At the last children’s party, T.A.M. Foundation got sponsorship from Upcycle It Gh in the form of cloth tote bags that the children could use for provisions shopping instead of single-use plastic bags.

With songs such as Refuse Reuse Recycle, Child Care, Atewa Forest and African Mermaid composed together with her brother, Wanlov the Kubolor, Sister Deborah has always used her creativity and social media platforms to address urgent social issues and promote social change. The siblings received the Environment and Sanitation Award in December 2020.

Her humanitarian work is mainly directed towards the wellbeing of the beneficiaries rather than her personal acclaim. She understands and believes that the focus of giving should always be on the cause itself. In the case of T.A.M. Foundation, the purpose is helping children and educating them to care about the oceans and their surroundings with the aim to ensure a safe planet for us all. In a world where people often seek publicity for their charitable acts, the multitalented star, Sister Deborah’s modesty is refreshing.

NPP thugs who invaded UTV convicted; fined GH¢2400 each

0

Sixteen (16) New Patriotic Party (NPP) thugs who were arrested for invading the offices of United Television (UTV) on Saturday, October 7, 2023, have been convicted and fined GH₵2400 each by the Achimota Magistrate Court.

The men were charged with conspiracy to commit crimes and rioting. They pleaded guilty to the charges and were subsequently convicted by the court.

On Saturday, October 7, while the station’s prime-time entertainment show, ‘United Showbiz’ was ongoing, the thugs stormed the studio of UTV, disrupted the live programme, and proceeded to threaten to assault the host and her guests.

It later emerged that the thugs were led by the Klottey Korle Youth Organizer of the NPP, allegedly under the orders of Ernest Owusu Bempah, a Deputy Director of Communications and other leading figures of the ruling party.

The group of young youths were upset that A Plus – a panelist on the show – tore into pieces a letter from the NPP leadership to the management of UTV requesting a reform of the United Showbiz panel.

The Ghana Journalists Association, The Information Ministry and several organisations condemned the invasion of the NPP thugs. The National Chairman of the NPP Stephen Ntim subsequently rendered an unqualified apology to the management of UTV.

Chairman Ntim walked into the studios of Peace FM on Thursday and publicly condemned the action of the NPP things.

In rendering the apology, he assured that the party leadership will ensure that such reprehensible action is not repeated.

Otabil, ICGC still in court over Capital Bank collapse

0

Following the sentencing of founder of defunct Capital Bank William Ato Essien by an Accra High Court, some have asked why other key decision makers in the bank were not equally prosecuted.

The 14 others include William Ato Essien, Oheneba Osei Akoto, Stephen Enchill, Kingsley Atta Ghansah, Otabil and Associates, International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Kwadwo Ayisi Ahwireng, Isaac Osah Thompson-Mensah and John Kofi Mensah who are all shareholders of the defunct company and Fitzgerald Odonkor, Amadu Montia, Kofi Kwakwa and Francis Adu-Mante who were directors of the company.

Why Civil action?

The Receiver is seeking to recover more than 800 million cedis from these individuals.

For instance, the High Court is being asked to recover 468 million cedis being shareholders loan and 108 million cedis being facilities granted to Ato Essien and his related companies which remain outstanding.

The court has also been asked to allow a recovery of 51 million cedis from the ICGC.

Allegations of fraud

The receiver argues in court documents that the Directors of the defunct bank approved loans and placement of funds to themselves and related parties without the requisite collaterals and in clear breach of the Company’s internal policies, relevant banking regulations and Ghanaian Company law.

The directors are alleged to have supervised the disbursement of liquidity support (620 million cedis) granted by the Bank of Ghana in breach of banking regulations and guidelines issued by the Central Bank.

The High Court case remained on hold as the debate on this continued first at the High Court and later at the Court of Appeal.

Essien as happened at the High Court allowing him to challenge the BOG’s actions in the same suit.

The High Court has meanwhile set November 21 to hear legal arguments on whether the Receivers have the capacity to sustain the legal action since the assets of the bank now belong to GCB Bank.

From a trailblazer to global beggar: How Ghana borrowed $11 billion in four years

Following its exit from the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative, Ghana has consistently sought external commercial loans from the Eurobond market, typically securing funds at interest rates ranging from 6% to 11%. Each fiscal year, the country requires between $1 billion to $3 billion to support its budget and address Balance of Payment (BoP) challenges.

Before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ghanaian government had borrowed $5 billion from the Eurobond market between 2017 and 2019. Repayment was heavily reliant on revenue mobilization, a strategy that did not materialize as expected. Consequently, by the end of 2021, Ghana’s debt from the International Capital Market (ICM) had escalated to $11 billion.https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/0Ojgl/1/

2017: The grace period

In 2017, Ghana saw a change in leadership as President Akufo-Addo assumed office after winning the 2016 presidential elections. Under his administration, efforts were made to rejuvenate an economy heavily dependent on commodities. Shortly after his inauguration, Ken Ofori-Atta was appointed as the Finance Minister, and Dr. Ernest Addison was entrusted with leading Ghana’s central bank, the Bank of Ghana.

During this period, Ghana was halfway through a $918 million International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme initiated in 2015 under the previous administration led by John Dramani Mahama. The programme aimed to reduce inflation, public debt, and the deficit while fostering economic growth. Originally set to conclude in 2017, the IMF programme provided Balance of Payment (BoP) financing support, enabling the Ghanaian government to navigate the fiscal challenges of the year without resorting to borrowing from the Eurobond market.

2018: The starting point

Fueled by positive economic forecasts and boosted credit ratings resulting from investor confidence following the successful implementation of the IMF programme, the Akufo-Addo administration made its inaugural entry into the international capital market. By the close of 2018, the government had secured $2 billion through Eurobonds, issued in both 10-year and 30-year terms at $1 billion each in May. This marked Ghana’s sixth appearance in the International Capital Market since its debut in 2007.

Out of the total borrowed amount, $830.0 million was allocated to refinancing the 2022 Eurobond. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds, amounting to $750.0 million, was designated for budgetary support, while the remaining $420 million was deposited into the Sinking Fund.

2019: The triple zone

In 2019, Ghana made its seventh appearance in the capital market, marking a significant milestone by successfully issuing its first triple-tranche Eurobond offering on the International Capital Market (ICM). This issuance, conducted in March 2019, raised a total of $3.0 billion through 7-year, 12-year, and 31-year Eurobonds, with amounts of $750 million, $1.25 billion, and $1.0 billion respectively. The decision to launch this triple-tranche transaction was influenced by the positive sentiments expressed by the international investor community.

During 2019, Emerging Market (EM) yields were more attractive compared to those in developed markets, providing emerging economies like Ghana with a favourable opportunity to secure more loans. Consequently, by the end of the year, Ghana’s Eurobond debt had surged by more than half.

Out of the $3 billion borrowed, $283.0 million was utilized to buy back the 2023 Eurobond. Additionally, $1,872.7 million was allocated for budget support and critical infrastructure financing, while $843.9 million was earmarked for further liability management operations. The remaining $0.4 million was retained in the Eurobond account.

2020: Covid-19 and more loans

Just before the onset of the COVID-19 lockdown, Ghana received strong backing from the capital market, a sentiment reinforced by Moody’s, the international ratings agency, which expressed confidence in the country’s economy and provided a positive outlook. In February 2020, Ghana achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first African nation to issue a 41-year bond and a second tri-tranche on the International Capital Market (ICM).

Through this endeavour, Ghana successfully raised a total of $3.0 billion by issuing 6-year, 14-year, and 40-year Eurobonds in amounts of $1.25 billion, $1.0 billion, and $750.0 million respectively. The coupon rates for these tranches were set at 6.375%, 7.875%, and 8.750% for the short-dated, medium-dated, and long-dated segments respectively. Over three years (2018-2020), Ghana accumulated a total borrowing of $8 billion from the ICM, bringing its total Eurobond issuance from 2007 to 2020 to $11.75 billion.

In the fiscal year of 2020, the $3 billion proceeds were utilized for liability management operations, refinancing energy sector debt, and meeting budgetary requirements.

2021: From trailblazer to global beggar

In 2021, following the conclusion of the Covid-19 lockdown, Ghana reopened for international trade, yet faced the challenge of a substantial budget deficit. The country’s financial stability relied heavily on support from the International Capital Market (ICM). In a groundbreaking move, Ghana became the first African nation to issue a zero-coupon tranche Eurobond as part of its inaugural 4-tranche Eurobond issuance, totalling a face value of $3.03 billion and generating proceeds of $2.88 billion.

This innovative transaction not only made Ghana the first sub-Saharan African Sovereign to issue a US$ bond since the pandemic began, but also expanded its market access by introducing the inventive use of a zero-coupon tranche. Out of the $2.88 billion borrowed, $125.9 million (including charges) was allocated to buy back the 2023 Eurobond through a tender offer. Additionally, $1.5 billion was used for budget support, while $1.26 billion was directed towards further liability management operations.

By the close of 2021, Ghana had accumulated a total Eurobond borrowing of $11 billion over four years: $2 billion in 2018, $3 billion in 2019, $3 billion in 2020 during the pandemic, and a final $3 billion in 2021.

In 2022, Ghana faced economic challenges as emerging markets experienced soaring coupon rates for bonds, rendering them exorbitantly expensive. The escalation of sovereign bond interest rates was exacerbated by tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Consequently, only three countries—Nigeria, South Africa, and Angola—managed to issue Eurobonds in the first half of the year.

Other nations, including Kenya and Ghana, were priced out of the international capital markets due to unsustainable interest rates. Consequently, these countries turned to IMF-supported programmes. For Ghana, the burden of debt servicing obligations, limited to interest payments only, was projected to reach approximately $5 billion at both domestic and external levels in 2023.

The burden ahead

The government of Ghana is expected to pay outstanding Eurobond loans worth at least $7.85 billion in the next 10 years, without a debt restructuring.

According to data contained in the 2021 debt report released by the Finance Ministry, nine outstanding Eurobonds maturing in the next 10 years could cost the government at least $7.85bn, with about $3.7 billion (41.13%) of the total amount expected to be serviced in the next five years.

Less than two years after Ghana became a trailblazer as the first country in Africa to issue a zero-coupon tranche Eurobond, the country has announced its intention to suspend payments on most of its external debts (including Eurobonds) to pave the way for a $3 billion IMF bailout package.

External debt restructuring headache

At the external level, Ghana is grappling with severe economic challenges, primarily centered around its Balance of Payments (BoP) issues. These problems have led to a depletion of the country’s international reserves and resulted in crises such as exchange rate fluctuations.

The country had to undergo debt restructuring to qualify for a three-year Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme aimed at providing BoP support. The IMF estimates that Ghana needs around $15 billion between 2023 and 2026 to address its BoP challenges.

The IMF has pledged $3 billion, the World Bank $1.55 billion, with the remaining $10.5 billion expected to come from external debt restructuring. Securing the $10.5 billion debt relief from external creditors poses a significant challenge for Ghana.

The country received the first tranche of $600 million after an assurance from external creditors. However, access to the subsequent tranches depends on passing the reviews, contingent on concluding financing assurances with foreign creditors.

Ghana’s debt arrangement with foreign creditors is anticipated to release approximately $2.5 billion in 2023 alone, helping bridge the BoP deficit.

In various debt restructuring negotiations worldwide, countries grappling with debt issues, such as Ghana, Zambia and Sri Lanka, find themselves caught in the crossfire of geopolitical tensions. A significant battleground emerges as China and the IMF struggle fiercely to resolve debt crises.

This complex situation underscores the challenging landscape of global debt restructuring and the significant impact it can have on countries like Ghana.

Certainly, the situation where China holds all of Ghana’s collateralised loans positions it as a pivotal player at the negotiation table for debt treatment.

This factor is crucial in determining the financing assurances Ghana needs to secure its second IMF bailout package, amounting to $600 million.

Ghana stands at a critical economic juncture, where the success of its 17th IMF programme hinges on substantial debt relief, expenditure cuts and significant revenue mobilisation.

Good news is nigh as Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has disclosed that Ghana has secured assurances from both China and France regarding the Memorandum of Outstanding (MoU) for the restructuring of the country’s external bilateral debts.

“We have met the Central Bank Governor of China and we don’t perceive any opposition or reluctance in participating positively when it comes to the Memorandum of Understanding on restructuring of our external bilateral debts” the Finance Minister said.

Mr Ofori-Atta revealed that “The Chinese government within the past months is close to reaching a similar deal with Zambia, Sri Lanka and Suriname, so following that trend, we expect some similar cooperation from them when it comes to Ghana”.

Answering questions from Journalists on the sidelines of the Annual International Monetary Fund/ World Bank meetings in Marrakesh, Morocco the Finance Minister noted that Ghana’s engagement under the G20 Common Framework has shown that it is working for countries with debt challenges and there are indeed mechanisms to restructure their debts.

“We have made tremendous progress under this framework compared to other countries on a similar path,” the Minister said.
