Akufo-Addo announces state funeral for Theresa Kufour on November 16

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced a state funeral for the late former First Lady, Theresa Kufuor.

The president at a meeting with the family of the late former first lady announced that a befitting state funeral would be held on November 16, 2023.

He made the announcement on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, when a delegation from the deceased family paid a courtesy call on the President at the Jubilee House to formally inform the Office of the President of Mrs Kufour’s demise.

Her one-week observation is currently taking place at her residence in Peduase, Aburi, on Wednesday, October 11, 2023.

The former first lady passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at the age of 87, following illness.

She was the wife of former President, John Agyekum Kufour who ruled Ghana from 2000 to 2008.

2,000 families to lose houses to save Weija Dam

0

More than 2,000 families will be forced to evacuate their houses according to a demolition order issued by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to some residents in Gbawe Gonse in the Weija Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region.

Last Monday, October 9, 2023, a number of houses were marked with red paint inscription that read “to be demolished by GWCL” and the date October 9, 2023, written below it.

The markings were done by some men in civilian clothes suspected to be from the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly and the GWCL under the supervision of armed men in military uniforms.

Call on government

When the Daily Graphic visited the area on Tuesday, October 10, it found that some buildings that were more than 600 metres from the river with others on a nearby hill had been marked for demolition.

“The marking was done on October 9, 2023, and that was the date they wrote on all the buildings.

That has left most of us confused because it doesn’t state when the demolition would be done or give us a grace period to evacuate our buildings,” said Mr Asare who had been living in the community for the past 30 years.

Mr Asare, who is also a government appointee to the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly called on the government to intervene to ensure the demolition was not carried out and lives were protected.

“We support any initiative to protect the water body but that must not involve the use of the military”, said Mr Asare who called for an engagement between the GWCL and the residents to come up with permanent solutions to the issue.

For residents and homeowners in the affected areas, including Agape Down, Agape Royal and Ablekuma Joma, the move to demolish their over 500 houses had left them spending the last two days under the looming fear that their hundreds of millions of Ghana cedis-worth properties were going to be pulled down with no compensation or a resettlement plan.

Already, a number of houses had been demolished about a fortnight ago in Joma, a nearby community in the same municipality with no prior notice or compensation for the victims.

The demolition in the two communities will be the second in 12 years in the same area by the GWCL following a demolition of more than 500 completed and uncompleted houses in December 2011 which left more than 2,000 people homeless and led to the death of a pregnant woman.

During the first demolition exercise, the GWCL cited encroachment of the buffer zone of the Densu River which feeds the Weija Dam, a crucial national asset providing potable water for thousands of residents of the central and western parts of Accra as the reason.

However, with the upcoming demolition, no reasons have been given while most of the houses that have been marked were far from the buffer zone of the river.

Houses marked

“Many people went into abject poverty after the first demolition of houses in this area, marriages were broken, and many died slowly.

How can we as a nation be doing this to our own people?

We are not foreigners.

We are Ghanaians who have toiled to earn some income to provide shelter for ourselves and our families,” a resident whose house had been marked with red paint indicating plans of the GWCL to pull it down, stated.

A woman whose one-storey building had been marked, Agatha Ofori, said she had been subjected to emotional torture “I cannot sleep.

It has not been easy for us”.

She said “My husband and I learned after we had built our house and moved in that some houses in this area were demolished some time ago.

Looking at the current cost of land and building materials, how can we evacuate our homes now?

Where will we go with our children?”

A retiree, John Kpeglo, who has rebuilt half of his building which was pulled down during the first demolition exercise said: “I am afraid.

I plead with the government to help us.”

He said the landlords association was ready to plant trees to demarcate the land and state clearly what the boundaries were.

Duriing the visit, it came to light that the distraught residents had just ended a meeting to discuss the way forward.

Most of the affected residents, especially the women with their eyes heavy with tears, appealed to the government to come to their aid.

They said the assembly had provided GPS addresses to houses in the area and took property rates from them, and the Electricity Company of Ghana had supplied electricity to the area while the community had demarcated electoral areas.

“No one can say we live here illegally because these things were not done for ghosts,” said one resident who pointed to a request notice from the assembly for property rate on one of the houses.

They believe the earmarked demolition was being done at the blind side of the court since there was a standing injunction against any demolition in the area.

Others wanted to know what will happen to the government agencies such as the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Land Commission, Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly,

Forestry Commission, Ministry of Works and Housing and Ghana Water Company Limited that sat aloof and allowed the people to sell and build on the land after the first demolition exercise more than a decade ago.

However, when the Daily Graphic contacted the Head of Communications of the GWCL, Stanley Martey, he said he could not comment on the issue and that the company was not aware of the demolition exercise.

Arnold punches Shatta Wale for insulting Kwame Despite, Fada Dickson

0

Popular media personality and Entertainment pundit, Arnold Asamoah Baidoo has blasted controversial reggae/dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale for going hard on business mogul, Kwame Despite and his protege, Fada Dickson of Despite Media Group.

According to Arnold, he sees no valid reason why Shatta Wale would throw insults at such renowned personalities just because an employee of them went hard at him.

Arnold claims Shatta Wale has been doing this same thing to his fellow acts, yet no one comes out at him, so he does not seem to understand why he should get mad at Kwasi Aboagye for dishing out his own type of meal to him.

He went on to call Shatta Wale a “malafaka” who can and does attack any and everyone as he wants but when he is given a little dosage of his own medicine then he’s angry.

This whole issue came up when Shatta Wale announced that he was paid £80,000 to perform at the Ghana Music Awards-UK which raised many eyebrows.

However, Kwasi Aboagye, an entertainment show host on Peace FM came out to debunk the news saying no Ghanaian organizer can afford to pay such money for a performance which didn’t sit well with Shatta Wale.

According to Mr Aboagye, the dancehall musician’s insults wouldn’t deter him from speaking the truth.

“I still stand by my statements. Go ahead and insult. That’s the only thing you can do,” he stated.

He expressed that his statement was based on thorough fact-checking backed by confirmation from reliable sources.

“When we are talking about issues, it is not about insults. As a journalist, I am a member of the fourth estate of the realm. We fact-checked. If it is not true, it is my duty as a journalist to fact-check. And people have called me to confirm that indeed, it is not true,” Kwasi Aboagye further added.

He said parading such claims could expose him to being taxed.

“If he won’t learn from it but rather insult, then that’s his business. Soon the UK government will come after you and you will learn. They have a threshold for income and £80,000 is above that threshold.

As a foreign entertainer, you’d have to pay once you earn above that money, there is a 20%. Next time, you will learn,” he noted.

Shatta Wale insults Kwasi Aboagye, Despite and Fadda Dickson over £80,000 performance fee claim

0

Controversial Dancehall artist Shatta Wale has strongly lambasted popular media personality Kwasi Aboagye for disputing his claim that he was paid £80,000 for his performance at the Taabea Ghana Music Awards UK.

During a recent radio show by Kwesi Aboagye, he openly expressed skepticism regarding Shatta Wale’s reported performance fee, suggesting that the £80,000 figure for the multiple award-winning dancehall performer was an exaggeration.

Shatta Wale, while maintaining that he indeed received the stated amount, took to TikTok live to issue threats against the broadcaster.

At one point, he directed his frustrations towards Kwasi Aboagye’s employers, Fada Dickson and Osei Kwame Despite, saying, “Kwasi Aboagye, if you’re not dismissed from Peace FM… you, Despite, and Fada Dickson are all acting foolish.

“I never misappropriated anyone’s funds. Nobody was aware when I was struggling at Circle. Just because you have a company, even those within the organization, can’t anyone point out that your actions are unreasonable? You folks are in Ghana thinking you’re billionaires,” he angrily expressed.

Michael Jackson’s jacket up for auction, could fetch over $400k

0

A legendary jacket once worn by the pop icon Michael Jackson is scheduled to be auctioned in London in November. The iconic jacket, famously seen in a 1984 Pepsi commercial, is part of a collection of over 200 pieces of music memorabilia up for sale.

The custom-made black-and-white leather jacket which was worn by Jackson in the commercial is estimated to be within the price range of £200,000 ($246,000) to £400,000 ($492,000). The jacket was part of the first in a series of ads featuring the superstar for the soft drink.

The Pepsi commercial from 1984 is famous because it was in this work Jackson suffered burn injuries due to a pyrotechnic malfunction. He however wore a different jacket for the commercial, according to the BBC.

The auction of Jackson’s iconic jacket will be conducted by costume and prop vendor Propstore including that of George Michael’s La Rocka jacket, worn during a 1987 duet with Aretha Franklin. A beehive hairpiece, used by Amy Winehouse in her 2007 music video for “You Know I’m No Good,” featured on her final album “Back To Black,” will also be available for sale.

The upcoming auction includes a wide range of memorabilia related to music legends such as David Bowie, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles.

Notable items on auction include a Gibson guitar once owned by AC/DC’s Angus Young, with a potential value of up to £120,000 while a belt buckle that was owned by John Lennon is estimated to be worth as much as £60,000.

Mark Hochman, the director of music and posters at Propstore, said he expects strong competition in the bidding process for these valuable items.

He noted that many of the exclusive lots being auctioned are making their debut in the public market, adding to the anticipated interest and competitiveness among potential buyers.

Jackson’s memorabilia has a history of fetching high prices at auctions. For instance, a black fedora hat he wore just before debuting his iconic moonwalk dance in 1983 was recently sold in Paris for $82,280.

Actress Pascaline Edwards survives near-fatal accident on Accra-Tema Motorway

0

Award-winning veteran Ghanaian actress, Pascaline Edwards, has disclosed her near-death experience while driving on the Accra-Tema motorway.

The actress took to social media to reveal how she escaped a motor accident after her tyre and rim got damaged due to the poor state of the highway.

In a Twitter post detailing her experience, Pascaline Edwards said but for God’s intervention, she would’ve died on the spot.

“I could’ve died on the motorway yesterday. Burst tire and broken rim. If it wasn’t for God,” she stated.

Edwards is considered a diva in the Ghanaian movie scene, with over a hundred movies to her credit in a professional career spanning a little over two decades and Ghana’s Best Female Actress in 2002.

Prior to this incident, some celebrities, during the #OccupyJulorbi protest, narrated instances where they suffered a similar fate on the Accra-Tema motorway.

Comedian SDK, in particular, recounted how he almost died from a driver’s inability to sight a pothole.

“We are exercising our rights; we need good roads. I stay at Spintex; you have passed the motorway before, right? I almost died on the Tema-Motorway because one driver did not know that there

Former Capital Bank CEO Ato Essien jailed 15 years for stealing

0

Former Chief Executive Officer and founder of defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with hard labour.

This follows his failure to pay in full an amount of GH¢90 million he agreed to pay the state despite several lifelines given him since December 2022.

Ato Essien pleaded guilty to 16 counts of stealing, money laundering and conspiracy to steal for his role in the collapse of Capital Bank.

He however entered a plea bargain with the state under section 35(7) of the courts ACT 459.

Under the agreement, Mr. Essien was expected to pay GH¢90 million for which he paid GH¢30 million cedis on December 13.

He was to pay the GH¢60 million remainder in three equal instalments in 2023; GH¢20 million by April 28, another GH¢20 million by August 31 and the last GH¢20 million by December 15, 2023.

A major condition of the agreement was that the court would not hesitate to impose a custodial sentence if he missed any of the payment deadlines.

But as of April 28, Mr. Essien had not paid all the GH¢20 million due to be settled.

The state filed an application on May 2, 2023, to get a custodial sentence imposed on the convict (Ato Essien).

But that application was not heard as the presiding judge, Justice Eric Kyei Baffour gave him (Ato Essien) about six months to redeem himself.

But between January this year to October 12, Ato Essien has only paid GH¢7 million in addition to the GH¢30 million previously paid.

With GH¢53 million of the agreed sum outstanding, the judge having exhausted his patience allowed the state to move the application.

The judge upon hearing the application jailed Ato Essien to spend 15 years in prison.

OSP petitions Chief Justice, wants new judge to handle Cecilia Dapaah’s case

0

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has petitioned the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, to remove Justice Edward Twum as the presiding Judge on the confirmation application against the seizure and freezing of properties of former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

The anti-graft body is scheduled to move its application for the court to approve its decision to seize some 2.8 million cedis and 590,000 dollars found in the home of Cecilia Dapaah and the freezing of her bank accounts on suspicion of being tainted properties.

This is after the court on Wednesday granted an application by lawyers of Cecilia Dapaah to move the hearing date of the confirmation to a much earlier date than October 18 which used to be the date.

But lawyers of the office of the special prosecutor say they cannot have Justice Edward Twum hear the application as he is prejudiced against them.

The request is grounded on the OSP’s belief that Justice Edward Twum appears to be highly prejudiced against the OSP and the person of the Special Prosecutor.

Consequently, as it stands, the OSP would not and cannot be reasonably expected to be parties to proceedings before the said judge.

Jada Pinkett Smith reveals how Chris Rock once asked her out when she had marital issues with Will Smith

0

Will Smith, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith’s drama goes way beyond the infamous Oscars slap in 2022.

In a recent candid interview, Actress, and TV host and producer, Jada Pinkett Smith, known for her role in “Girls Trip,” shared some eye-opening details about her history with comedian Chris Rock. Amid the revelation that she and her husband, Will Smith, have been living separate lives for the past seven years, Jada disclosed an interesting encounter with Chris.

She revealed that during the summers when rumors of divorce swirled around her and Will, Chris took it upon himself to step into the picture. Jada explained to People in an interview published on October 11, “And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce. So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized, and that was that.”

This revelation comes in the wake of Jada’s appearance on the Today Show, where she openly discussed her separation from actor Will Smith. They’ve been apart since 2016 but have not officially divorced. They struggled with figuring out how to navigate their partnership and maintain their public image as a happy couple.

Their marriage, which began in 1997, has been under the spotlight for various reasons. Singer August Alsina claimed to have been romantically involved with Jada in 2020, shedding light on their challenging times. The 2022 Oscars incident, where Will slapped Chris Rock for joking about Jada’s hair loss, further exposed their marital issues.

Jada’s recent interview with People highlighted that their marriage faced challenges as early as 2016. She shared, “By 2016, we were both exhausted with trying and stuck in our fantasies of what the other person should be.”

For those eager to dive deeper into Jada Pinkett Smith’s life and experiences, her upcoming memoir, “Worthy,” set to be released on October 17, promises to offer more insights into her personal journey, career, and early life. Will Smith and I have been separated since 2016 – Jada Pinkett Smith reveals

0

American actress and talk show host, Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed that she and her husband Will Smith have been living “completely separate lives” since 2016.

In a clip from her forthcoming NBC News primetime special with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith said the couple had not previously gone public with their separation because they were not “ready yet.”

They were “still trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership,” she said.

“How do we present that to people?” she told Kotb. “We hadn’t figured that out.”

Jada Pinkett, 52, and Will Smith, 55, have been married since 1997. Pinkett Smith said they are not legally divorced.

Their marriage has come under scrutiny in recent years. In July 2020, singer August Alsina revealed that he had been romantically involved with Pinkett Smith, something she confirmed during an episode of her Facebook Watch show “Red Table Talk.”

“We were still trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership,” she said. “How do we present that to people? We hadn’t figured that out.”

“I got into an entanglement with August,” Pinkett Smith said at the time, explaining then that the superstar couple “were going through a very difficult time” when it occurred.

Then there was the Oscars slap. During the 2022 Academy Awards, Smith stormed the stage and slapped presenter Chris Rock after he made a joke about Pinkett Smith being bald. She suffers from alopecia, which has caused her hair loss.

In a new interview with People, Pinkett Smith opened up about the incident, which she said, like many other people, she initially thought was a comedic bit between the two men.

“I thought, ‘This is a skit.’ I was like, ‘There’s no way that Will hit him,’” she recalled. “It wasn’t until Will started to walk back to his chair that I even realized it wasn’t a skit.”

She told the publication that as soon as they were alone she asked Smith, “Are you okay?”

Pinkett Smith told Kotb during their interview that the marriage fractured because of “a lot of things.”

“I think by the time we got to 2016, we we both just exhausted with trying…I think we were both kind of still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”Pinkett said

She said she “made a promise” that there would never be a reason for her and Smith to divorce “and I just haven’t been able to break that promise,” she said.

Pinkett Smith reveals more about her marriage, career and early life in her forthcoming memoir, “Worthy.” The book releases Oct. 17.

Shatta Wale gifts cash to man who found missing GHS100K and returned it

0

Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale has, out of the goodness of his heart, decided to gift a man for his act of integrity.

As reported by Adom FM, a currently unemployed man made a remarkable discovery when he found a polythene bag containing over GH¢100,000, a key, and an ID card in the backseat of a taxi he had taken from the Mobile filling station at Nima to Abossey Okai.

This good Samaritan chose not to keep the discovered items for himself and instead, he delivered them to the studios of Adom FM, initiating efforts to locate the rightful owner.

When questioned about why he did not consider keeping the significant amount of money, especially given his current unemployed status, he explained that it went against his principles and values. He felt compelled to do the right thing, emphasizing that this is how he was raised.
