Bessa Simons elected as MUSIGA President

0

Popular Highlife Legend Bessa Simons has been elected as the new president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), ending years of postponed elections that have plagued the organization.

MUSIGA’s elections have been marred by various obstacles, with the most recent being rejected by an Accra high court in August.

Bessa Simons who had been serving as MUSIGA’s acting president, secured a total of 324 votes, defeating his sole rival, Ras Caleb, who received 66 votes.

The legendary Highlife musician who hails from a family of musicians, began his musical journey during his days at Aggrey Memorial Boarding School in Cape Coast.

He continued his education at the National Academy of Music in Winneba, now known as the University of Education, Winneba. He later obtained a diploma from the School of Audio Engineering in London, UK.

Simons is a former member of the pioneering Afro-funk group Osibisa and the current frontman of the Bessa band. He is behind hits like ‘Sii Nana’, ‘Awo Yi’ and ‘Belembe.’

He has also collaborated with big names in Ghanaian music, including Ebo Taylor, Pat Thomas, Papa Yankson, C.K. Mann, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley and the Tagoe Sisters.

Among the ‘Belembe’ crooner’s initial obligations at MUSIGA is the crucial task of re-establishing unity and trust among its members.

In July, MUSIGA’s leadership openly disapproved of certain members who had decided to form a breakaway union.

“After the failure of their legal machinations and manoeuvring, this latest attempt to break the ranks of MUSIGA is unwarranted and must be condemned by all well-meaning musicians,” Simons said.

Meanwhile, the polls on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, which saw participation from MUSIGA members across Ghana, brought several other executives into power, including Thomas Yawson as first vice president, Abena Ruthy as second vice president and SK Agyemang as general secretary.

The rest are Eddie Eyison as national treasurer, Gifty Ghansah as national welfare officer, and Chizzy Wailer as national organiser.

Kwabena Kwabena urges artistes to employ poets for song lyrics

0

Multiple award-winning Ghanaian highlife singer and songwriter, George Kwabena Adu popularly known as Kwabena Kwabena has urged fellow musicians to employ poets in the songwriting process to help shape their craft when producing their songs.

Speaking on Joy Prime, he identified that poets are skilled in writing compelling lyrics that adequately appeal to consumers.

His statements come in the wake of a recent controversy where Kuami Eugene accused Mr. Drew of not acknowledging him for writing the latter’s most recent hit song, ‘Case’.

“Musicians should start to appreciate people who have various talents. There are people who are good producers, there are people who are good composers, and there are people who write good stories.

“I must admit, we need to start employing poets; people who can write or put together beautiful English pieces, then we can get composers to actually produce the melody,” he said.

He made these points while raising concerns about the quality of songs in Ghana.

According to the ‘Adult Music’ crooner, most Ghanaian musicians do not consider songwriting an important craft, a situation, that could impede growth and the quality of songs being churned lately.

Touching on claims that his colleagues have turned songwriting into a full-time business, Kwabena Kwabena, said he doesn’t charge for writing songs.

MTN Ghana Leads Conversation On Cybersecurity And Digital Transformation For SMEs

The Senior Manager, Enterprise Information, Security and Governance at MTN, Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei has called on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) to build the requisite capacity and resources to manage cybersecurity issues and challenges. She made the call at the second MTN Business Executive Breakfast series held in Accra last week.

Jacqueline Hanson- Kotei said, “most SMEs face cybersecurity issues and challenges because they do not have the requisite tools and resources. Risk assessment of the loopholes and vulnerabilities in a business and an understanding of regulatory requirements regarding your space can serve as a good foundation for mitigating this risk. It is also important to look at the people you work with i.e., your staff and third parties because their digital practices could pose a risk to your business.’

Organized under the theme, ‘Cybersecurity and Digital Transformation of SMEs,’ the forum presented the opportunity for key industry players and experts to discuss and share knowledge, exchange ideas, push for policy formulation and collaborate on cybersecurity and digital transformation for SMEs.

Ms. Adwoa Asamoah, Audit and Compliance Lead at the Ghana Cyber Security Authority, who delivered the keynote address on behalf of the Director General, commended MTN Ghana for leading the conversation on cybersecurity and digital transformation. “In today’s world of digital advancement, the world has become more connected than ever. While this presents incredible opportunities for growth and innovation, it also brings forth a pressing concern – the need to protect our citizens as well as SMEs from the dark side of the internet. SMEs are the backbone of the economy. The vital role SMEs play in job creation, innovation and economic growth cannot be overemphasized. She recommended that SMEs receive training in cybersecurity to equip them to identify and fight cyber-attacks.”

Ms. Asamoah also indicated that the government has initiated and established various mechanisms to address Ghana’s cybersecurity challenges. Key interventions are the enactment of the Cybersecurity Act 2020 (Act 1038) CSA, the licensing of cybersecurity service providers and accreditation of cyber security establishments and professionals in a bid to regulate services in accordance with approved standards and procedures.

Panelists who led the discussions at the forum were C.K. Bruce, CEO of Innovare Ghana, Jacqueline Hanson-Kotei, and Audrey Mnisi, Banking Ops, Risk and cybersecurity Specialist at Ghana

Association of Banks. Key areas of deliberations included key cybersecurity challenges that SMEs typically face in their digital transformation, how robust cybersecurity practices act as a catalyst for SME growth and competitiveness, as well as success stories of SMEs that have successfully leveraged cybersecurity to scale their businesses. Others included essential cybersecurity frameworks, guidelines and best practices SMEs should consider in their strategies, key data protection and cybersecurity regulations that they should be aware of and comply with among other pertinent discussions.

Panelists also recommended some solutions including the call for the enforcement of robust access controls to restrict unauthorized access to sensitive systems and data to reduce potential attacks and minimize the impact of a breach. They also called for the allocation of appropriate resources and all stakeholders should adhere to cyber security policies and practices.

In his remarks, the Chief Information Officer of MTN, Mr. Bernard Acquah, commended all the speakers for the insights shared and called for continuous conversations on cybersecurity to ensure that there is more awareness amongst various stakeholder groups.

Late Mohbad’s father asks forgiveness, readies to speak the truth about his son’s death

0

Mohbad’s father has now come out to spill everything that happened on the day his son died while speaking with BBC Yoruba.

The father begged the Nigerian to forgive him for everything that had happened in burying his son, Mohbad so rapidly.

The late singer’s father describes how his son was assaulted and lived in fear after his contract with Naira Marley and Company expired.

The father went on to say that he taught Naira Marley to be a decent person because of how he acted when he came to his house to plead with him about his son.

According to appearances, the late singer’s father does an excellent job on Mohbad both before and after his death.

The Post Captions:

‘My son died at about 3 pm, nobody called me. By the time I got to his house, it was 10 pm and I saw a lot of crowds. We were denied a police report at the station, We tried to take him to the mortuary but there was no space, and I couldn’t be watching him in the house. I had to bury him. Nigerians should forgive me if I offended them.

“Nobody loves him like me. I have never seen Samlarry before in my life. The first day I went to Naira Marley’s house, Mohbad was eating and Naira picked a spoon and was eating with him. This touched me that he loved him so much but my son told me Naira was evil. When I went to Naira’s room to beg him to forgive my son whatever he might have done, I didn’t know he was recording me.

“The first time Samlarry ever beat him, he told me not to say anything, he reported at the police station but nothing was done. Since then he had always been living with fear. He was beaten again during his video shoot with Zlatan. I need justice for him. As a Pastor, I can’t fight this traditionally because of my religion. If they want to do the DNA test, let them do it,” Mohbad’s father said.

So today, I can boldly say I earned a day to celebrate myself because I deserve it. Happy blessed birthday to me 🥂

This is why NPP ‘hooligans’ stormed UTV studio and disrupted live show

0

Some persons believed to be affiliated with the governing New Patriotic Party stormed the studio of Accra-based United Television (UTV) on Saturday, October 7, 2023.

These persons disrupted the live late-night entertainment show of the station, ‘United Showbiz’ on Saturday. The live show was halted for several minutes before the police arrived to restore normalcy.

The police have so far arrested 16 suspects in connection with the invasion.

Many stakeholders have condemned the attack including the Ministry of Information, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the National Media Commission (NMC).

The youth were captured on video demanding to be part of the programme claiming that it has been turned into a political show.

They described as distasteful previous comments by some of the panellists that sought to put the Akufo-Addo/Dr Bawumia’s government in a bad light.

They claimed to have invaded the studio to demand an unqualified apology from A Plus, a musician and political activist, for allegedly tearing a copy of a letter addressed to the management of UTV to streamline the show.

The NPP supporters later occupied the seats which were originally occupied by the guests demanding the whereabouts of A Plus.

One of their leaders said, “A Plus sat here and tore our document from our party [NPP] that seeks to streamline the show, that is our party property, we need him to render an unqualified apology.

They cannot be sitting here and doing politics. We know this programme is supposed to be a showbiz programme, personally, I love the programme, we enjoy it because it’s an entertainment programme. But recently, we have realised that it’s turning from an entertainment programme to a strict political programme, and we have seen that there are so many NDC people on the show, but we are not finding an NPP person.”

“We saw what the former hostess Nana Ama McBrown was doing, and it was quite fantastic. It is our constitutional right to protect our party. What A Plus did was a gross disrespect to our party. You have [through this programme] insulted our General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, our President and his vice”.

After calm was restored, MzGee said, “We had some uninvited guests who came to disrupt our show, we didn’t plan to go on that long break, but we were forced to break due to the invasion. I’m sure you have seen some of the visuals online, we don’t know who they were and who sent them. Please forgive us for the break, but everyone is ok. This is an entertainment show, but some of our people in the creative arts joined the recent demonstrations, how can we not talk about it?”

“We don’t do politics, but when there’s a trending political issue which concerns members in the creative industry, we discuss it, because we also buy fuel, we pay tax. Members in the creative industry are also concerned with developmental issues in the country. If those in the creative arts talk about such political issues with entertainment linings, it doesn’t mean we are doing politics”.

Sonnie Badu, a gospel artiste who was supposed to be in the studio, narrated, “I was looking forward to being on United Showbiz, but we had a serious security alert, my team decided that we shouldn’t go in. We saw about 50 thugs invading the premises and attacked some of the workers and producers. One of the producers told us to leave the premises, I was hoping to be on the show but safety first, I’m so sorry, hopefully, one day I will get there. God bless you”.

The director of photography and one of the producers of the show were allegedly assaulted, while the hostess, MzGee and guests were said to have been traumatised in the process.

Tax prostitutes, weed sellers too – ‘Sarcastic’ Afia Schwarzenegger tells GRA

0

Controversial Ghanaian media personality and socialite, Afia Schwarzenegger, has called on the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to tax prostitutes and weed sellers after announcing its decision to collect tax from other menial jobs.

According to her, the decision by the GRA to tax bloggers, influencers, and Masters of Ceremonies (MCs) is quite unfortunate; hence, other menial jobs in the country should equally be taxed.

The controversial socialite, in a sarcastic post, said the Ghana Revenue Authority should tax weed sellers, prostitutes, and coffin makers because their professions are equally relevant as those being planned to be taxed.

“I have heard that GRA wants to tax influencers, MCs, and bloggers. We have heard. But please GRA, when will you tax prostitutes and weed sellers? If you go to the Dome Crossing, the amount of money passes there [by weed sellers].

“When will you tax weed sellers, bouncers (macho men), and coffin makers? you want to tax MCs, is that a job that we collect tax? We want an answer on when you’ll tax prostitutes and weed sellers. We want an answer because some jobs are not as valuable as others,” Afia Schwarzenegger said in a video posted on her Instagram page.

Her reaction comes following the announcement of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) that bloggers, influencers, and Masters of Ceremonies would be taxed, which raised eyebrows among some Ghanaians.

Many said the government did not put to use the monies generated from the Electronic Transfer Levy, otherwise known as E-Levy, yet other taxes have been introduced to rake in revenue for the state.

MohBad’s death: Nursing assistant allegedly injected him with drugs before he died – Authorities say

0

Authorities in Nigeria said a nursing assistant allegedly injected MohBad with drugs after he complained of “unbearable pains” following a “violent fight” with a childhood friend before he later died. The nursing assistant has since been named as prime suspect in the 27-year-old’s death, BBC reported.

The singer, whose real name is Ilerioluwa Aloba, passed away in a Lagos hospital on September 12, but he was hastily buried. The circumstances surrounding his death triggered protests in southern Nigeria as fans and sympathizers took to the streets to call for justice. People on social media have been using the hashtag #justiceformohbad to call on authorities to get to the bottom of the matter.

Authorities in the West African nation on Friday said the nursing assistant was allegedly negligent when she injected MohBad with the drugs. Authorities also expatiated what happened prior to his death, saying that he sustained an injury after he got into a fight with a friend identified as Oluwatosin Owoduni.

The deceased singer is said to have suffered an injury to his arm after he hit a car window while trying to strike Owoduni. After his injury was exacerbated over the subsequent days, another friend identified as Ayobami Sadiq got in touch with the nursing assistant and arranged for her to come to the deceased Afrobeats star’s home to treat him.

Lagos State Police Command commissioner Idowu Owohunwa said the nursing assistant administered three injections on MohBad. He, however, started vomiting and convulsing not too long after. He was then taken to a hospital where he died.

Owohunwa said the current investigation into MohBad’s death established the nursing assistant, identified as Feyisayo Ogedengbe, was unqualified to administer injections, BBC reported. Sadiq and Owoduni have since been arrested, but police haven’t provided details on the charges they have brought against Ogedengbe. Sadiq was, however, detained for allegedly conspiring to commit a felony for allegedly arranging for an unqualified nursing assistant to render medical aid to MohBad in a “non-clinical setting.”

The recent revelations by the police come after singer Naira Marley and music promoter Sam Larry were invited to assist with investigations into MohBad’s death. The deceased 27-year-old was initially signed to Marley’s Marlian Records. But he parted ways with his boss following a highly publicized feud. In the wake of his death, a section of Nigerians called out Marley for his alleged harsh treatment of the singer when they parted ways.

Authorities arrested Marley and Sam Larry on suspicion of bullying and harassing MohBad. And though authorities said Marley and Sam Larry were abroad when MohBad sustained the injury that led to his supposed death, they stated that “there are ample electronic and credible witnesses’ evidence linking them to cyberbullying, threat to life, assault occasioning harm and conduct likely to cause breach of peace against the deceased in his lifetime.”

Marley has, however, publicly stated that he has no hand in the death of MohBad.
