Nearly 3 decades after his death in 1996, rapper Tupac Shakur is still setting records.
The legacy of Tupac Shakur, one of the most influential and iconic figures in the history of hip-hop, continues to captivate fans and collectors alike, even years after his untimely passing.
On Monday, Sotheby’s New York said a piece of jewellery once owned by the “California Love” rapper sold for over $1 million.
The gold, ruby and diamond crown ring became “the most valuable Hip Hop artefact ever sold at auction,” according to the auction house.
A significant artifact, which happens to be a ring worn by the ‘Dear Mama’ rapper during his last public appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in September 1996, was sold at a staggering price of $1Million in a high- profile auction, stirring a frenzy among music enthusiasts and memorabilia collectors.
The ring features an inscription referencing Kidada Jones, the daughter of legendary composer Quincy Jones, who was engaged to Tupac at the time of his death.
Tupac’s godmother offered the ring for auction. She told Sotheby’s the ring was designed by the rapper himself and was made in New York City after he had just signed with Death Row Records. Before the auction, Sotheby’s had estimated the ring would sell for between $200,000 and $300,000.
