West Ham deal elevates Dede as 3rd most expensive Ghanaian player

Dede Ayew WestHam

Andre Ayew’s £20.5m move from Swansea to West Ham United has made him the third most expensive  Ghanaian footballer of all time behind Michael Essien and Baba Rahman.

West Ham paid a club record fee for the deputy Ghana captain on Monday and it is also a fee that took him past the likes of Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoahh and Sulley Muntari but still someway behind Michael Essien.

Here is a list of the ten most expensive Ghanaian players of all time

Michael Essien £24.4m from Lyon to Chelsea

More than ten years after Essien became the most expensive Ghanaian footballer ever, he still holds unto that title. He was considered one of the best midfielders in the world at the time and went on to give seven great years to the club.

Baba Rahman £21m from Auburg to Chelsea

When Baba Rahman became Chelsea’s second high profile Ghanaian signing last summer, it was after a race for his signature involving many clubs. That  £21m has not been good value just yet given Rahman’s negligible contribution on the field but the loan spell at Schalke in Germany may be what sparks him into life finally.

Andre Ayew   £20m from Swansea to West Ham

He arrived at Swansea from Marseille for free but now the Welsh club have made a handsome profit on Dede Ayew thanks to his 12 goals in his debut EPL season and general work rate. At 26 years, he has also possibly arrived at the club at just the perfect time.

The likes of Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah, Sulley Muntari, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Bernard Mensah all fit in the top ten but the exact order is contentious given the varying exchange rate of the major currencies.
