Afrobeats lacks lyrical depth, says Fireboy

Nigerian music artist, Adedamola Adefolahan, popularly known as Fireboy DML, offers a critical perspective on the Afrobeats genre, pointing out a deficiency in meaningful lyrics and emotional depth.
He contends that Afrobeats primarily revolves around “vibes” and urges fellow musicians to inject the genre with “pure soul and lyricism.”
In a recent BET interview, Fireboy stresses the importance of artists delving into their emotions and life experiences to produce music that profoundly connects with audiences.
He observes, “The Afrobeats scene before I came in was built on vibes. But I realised that there was something lacking, and that was pure soul and lyricism in our music.”
Introducing a novel sub-genre called “Afro-Life,” Fireboy aims to infuse Afrobeats with profound lyricism and soulful melodies, seeking to elevate the genre’s artistic depth.
