The Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency, Henry Kwabena Kokofu, erred if indeed he filed his nominations as an independent candidate at the Electoral Commission (EC) on Friday, September 30.

The NPP says its outgoing MP has gone contrary to the Article 3 (8) of the party’s constitution if indeed the MP filed his nominations.

The incumbent NPP MP for Bantama, Henry Kokofu, confirmed earlier reports that he filed his nomination to contest in the parliamentary election as an independent candidate.

“Yes, I filed to contest as an independent candidate; but I have called my representatives this morning to go to the Electoral Commission to withdraw it,” he said.

“I am not ready to talk about why I took that decision…at the appropriate time, I will explain,” Mr. Kokofu told the media on Monday.

Reacting to the issue on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa hosted by Kwame Karikari on Monday, the Ashanti Regional NPP Secretary, Sam Pyne, explained that Mr. Kokofu is out of town and regional executives are yet to talk to him.

Sam Pyne said if he did that and the party did not allow him, then he violated the Article 3 (8) of the party’s constitution.

He said he will come to Ghana on Thursday “and when he comes we shall talk to him. He will come and explain why he did that,” Sam Pyne added.

The incumbent for the Bantama Constituency in the Ashanti Regioon lost the NPP primary in June last year to his opponent, Daniel Aboagye.

Mr Kokofu polled 225 while his competitor Mr Aboagye polled 289 votes, making Mr Aboagye representative of the NPP for the December elections.
