Confirmed: Steven Gerrard joins Saudi Pro League as new manager for Al-Ettifaq

Former Aston Villa coach, Steven Gerrard has been confirmed as the new manager of Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq.

It comes as something of a surprise as the 43-year-old confirmed last month that he had been invited over to Saudi Arabia by the club but would not be pursuing the opportunity.

Speaking to Channel 4 during their coverage of England’s 7-0 win over North Macedonia, the Liverpool legend said: ‘I was invited over there to look at a potential offer, which I did.

‘I have been analysing that over the last couple of days. But, as we stand right now, I won’t be taking that offer up.’

Things have clearly changed as Al-Ettifaq confirmed Gerrard’s arrival with a social media post which read: ‘Where legends are found.

‘We’re thrilled to announce Steven Gerrard is our new head coach.

They added: ‘Tournaments know him and he knows them. The football legend brings his expertise to Fares Al-Dahna.’

Gerrard is not the only Liverpool legend to have moved to Saudi Arabia this summer, with Robbie Fowler appointed manager of second-tier side Al-Qadsiah FC.

That continues something of a globe-trotting managerial career for the former Reds and England striker, who has also taken charge of teams in India, Thailand, Australia and England.

Al-Ettifaq finished seventh of 16 teams in the Saudi Pro League last season, but although there have been several big-name signings in the division so far this summer, they have not made any in their playing squad.

Gerrard is back in managerial work for the first time since being dismissed as Aston Villa manager in October last year.
