Some celebrities have joined Day 2 of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration that started on Thursday, 21 September 2023.
On Friday (22 September 2023) morning, celebrities Efia Odo, E.L., Kelvyn Boy and comedian Warris were spotted among the demontrators that converged on the 37 bus terminal to march to the Jubilee House.
E.L. told journalists he was absent on the first day of the demonstration because it was impromptu but needed to be on the ground today, since it was not late to participate.
“It’s up to us, celebrities; it’s up to us, the people; and let the powers that be, know that we are actually thinking and we have the power to make change happen”.
He said: “Whenever I come back to Ghana, I realise that things have actually deteriorated to a certain extent and it has been chipping away… for a very long time”.
“I’m getting worried about it. For the generation to come, I’m getting worried about the children. You know my children and others that are going to come after this. It’s going to impact them greatly. This is the time to actually make that effort to make something change”, E.L. said.
Meanwhile, the minority caucus has said it is “appalled that the Ghana Police Service is increasingly seen to be lending itself to a regime of terror and tyranny that is being meted out to critics of this intolerant Akufo-Addo/Bawumia New Patriotic Party government”.
A statement signed by Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson condemned the “terror” unleashed on #OccupyJulorbiHouse protesters by the “terror squad” of the Police Service.
The caucus condemned the arrest and brutal assault of protesters and journalists by police officers.
The Police Service has denied the accusations of assault but the Minority Caucus said its alleged brutality is at variance with its motto.
“We condemn, in no uncertain terms, the police officers’ ruthless and barbaric crackdown on the unarmed peaceful protesters”, the caucus said.
It added: “For a police service that is badly and widely criticised for its partisan policing methods in recent years, and for which a parliamentary probe is currently ongoing, the 16th-century style crackdown and terror unleashed by them on the peaceful protesters in Accra yesterday further dims the reputation of the Ghana Police Service”.
