The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) is assuring the various transport unions that government is not taking over their business with the advent of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

The bus system, known as ‘Ayaalolo,’ is to afford commuters easy means of transport in the capital. A five-day piloting of the system which started on Monday had to be suspended for technical reasons.

Speaking at a press briefing after the launch of the test drive, acting General Secretary of the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council, Andrews Kwesi Kwakye said: “the buses are going to be run by these same old transport corporations, GPRTU, PROTOA etc. So, nobody is coming to take over anybody’s business.”

He said all transport bodies under the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council are involved in the BRT transport business.

Some commercial drivers, in Accra, had earlier threatened a protest over the introduction of the BRT.

However, a member of PROTOA, John Nartey, told the media he has been trained as a driver of the BRT and has quality driving skills now to work for the betterment of the BRT.
