How my SHS killed my dream of becoming one of Ghana’s most successful athlete – Samini

Celebrated Ghanaian music icon, Emmanuel Andrews Sammini widely recognized as Samini, maintains his belief that he could have become one of the country’s most accomplished athletes if he had attended a Senior High School equipped with facilities and policies to nurture sports talents.

Samini is convinced that his promising athletic career, which began during his primary school days, could have flourished on the global stage if he had enrolled in a school actively involved in inter-school sports competitions at the time.

During an interview on Angel FM, Samini emphasized that he didn’t intend to diminish the impact of St. Margareth Mary SHS in Dansoman on his life and career. Instead, he highlighted the absence of favorable conditions for nurturing talented sports students during his schooling years.

The award-winning musician also shared anecdotes of how he used to sneak out of campus to participate in inter-school competitions held at El Wak and Accra Academy.

“The only reason Ghana didn’t hear of me as an athlete is because I went to a high school which was very new then. We used to sneak out of school for inter-co to have a feel of it. Wesley Grammar, Accra Academy, Ebenezer, and all those schools used to participate but we had to jump walls because nothing used to happen on our campus.

“During my basic school days, I was known to be a runner. Those who know me can attest to the fact that I was a sprinter. Unfortunately, my SHS did not participate in such activities. I couldn’t explore most of the sporting opportunities” he said.

Samini also revealed his footballing prowess, mentioning that he was often deployed in the wing positions due to his remarkable speed.

In a confident tone, Samini boasted that he holds the position of the top striker in the soccer team comprised of Ghanaian musicians and proudly claims to have scored the highest number of goals in a competitive match.

“I played football also. My coach liked my pace so he mostly deployed me as a striker. In the current musician team, I’m the leading striker. I have scored the most goals also.

In addition to his high school education at St Margareth Mary, Dansoman, Samini recently graduated from the Ghana Institute of Management Public Administration (GIMPA).
