I Take full Responsibility – Andre Ayew Apologizes for Ghana’s AFCON 2023 performance

Black Stars captain, Andre Ayew, took to video on Tuesday night, offering a heartfelt apology for Ghana’s disappointing performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The apology, coming eight days after the team’s dramatic 2-2 draw against Mozambique, signaled the end of their journey in the Côte d’Ivoire tournament.

In that crucial match, Ayew played a central role in the chaos, giving away a penalty in the dying minutes of normal time. A subsequent mistake by goalkeeper Richard Ofori allowed Mozambique to secure a corner and equalize. This turn of events led to a palpable disappointment for both Ghanaians and football fans.

“These past days have been very difficult for every Ghanaian and every Ghanaian football fan, and myself,” expressed the Le Havre man in his sincere apology. “I would like to apologize for the results of the AFCON that we just exited. We should have done better. We should have gotten better results too.”

Acknowledging his role as the captain of the squad, Ayew didn’t shy away from taking full responsibility for the team’s on-field performance.
“As the captain of the squad, I take full responsibility for what happened on the pitch for the playing body.

“In football, these are things that happen. These are things that make you stronger. What doesn’t kill makes you stronger individually and collectively,” he reflected, highlighting the resilience needed to navigate the challenges in the world of football.

Ayew expressed optimism, asserting that the team will rebound, emphasizing the adage, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”
