Front runners of the 2016 presidential elections are scheduled to file their nominations on Thursday, September 29, 3news.com has gathered.

John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) are expected to be at the head office of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) to file their nominations.

The presidential candidates are expected to make available a banker’s draft for GH¢50,000 as filing fees, a charge that has already generated controversy among relatively smaller political parties.

The PPP as well as the Independent People’s Party (IPP) are already in court to stop the EC from taking the fee.

But the two main contenders appear unperturbed by the charge.

Nana Akufo-Addo, who has lost the past two elections and making a third attempt, will be filing at 9:00am on Thursday, his party’s National Organiser told TV3 on Wednesday.

John Boadu was dismissive of the filing fee, saying on News @ 10 that it was not backed by law.

The NDC has also given notification that its candidate, Mr Mahama, who won the last elections by 50.63 per cent, will file at 1:00pm at the EC head office.

PPP says its flagbearer will also file on Thursday but without the fee, claiming any party that pays the money stands in contempt of court.

Aside the fee for presidential candidates, parliamentary candidates, who are expected to file at the EC’s district offices, will pay GH¢10,000.
