The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has demystified notions by a section of the Ghanaian populace particularly politicians that it has suddenly gotten itself involved and interested in presidential debate when it has stayed aloof over the years.
The Director of Communications for the Commission, Madam Joyce Afutu, says the Commission has been engaged in this kind of dialogue since 2004 with focus on bringing to the attention of politicians, the actual needs of the voter populace.
Speaking on a possible date for the dialogue, madam Afutu said the Commission is in wait of the Electoral Commission’s list of actual candidates to engage in the dialogue.
Although their research team is yet to publish its findings this year, it is certain the actual date for the dialogue shall be out in August.
The Commission, according to Madam Afutu, has embarked on a series of research that ensures the voice of the voiceless is heard.
She stated that research had always been the basis of the dialogue held with the political parties contesting to be voted to power.
She explained that 2012 research revealed three basic needs of the people ahead of that general election.
“In 2012, the main issues that featured in our research were three. Education, Health and issue of unemployment were the major problems and concerns of the citizenry.” She said.
She said the issues were made known to the parties in a form of dialogue to help their candidates address the actual need of the people in their manifestos.
The Commission, according to her, is awaiting their research team to come up with results of their findings to enable them start the dialogue.
