Sonnie Badu apologizes to Dr. Kweku Oteng after calling him out over concert snub

0

UK-based Ghanaian gospel singer, Sonnie Badu has sent an apology to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Angel Group of Companies, Dr. Kweku Oteng after calling him out for not answering his call despite a promise by the business mogul to support his ‘Rhythms of Africa’ concert financially.

According to him, his decision to make the issue public was due to the frustration that grew in him after an impression was created that Dr. Kweku Oteng supported his concert which was not true.

Sonnie Badu noted that he has learnt his lessons from what happened and would not repeat the same attitude another time which could affect his relationship with prominent people.

Read the full statement below

Let me use my platform to apologize to Dr. Kweku Oteng for calling him out on Okay 101.7FM – for not sponsoring my concert, ‘Rhythms of Africa’.

For those of you who don’t know: I remained loyal to him and honored him gracefully in Atlanta, Georgia.

For my major concert in Atlanta, Dr. Oteng promised to support the project but came up short.

For the recently held concert in Ghana, I paid a courtesy call on him and once again, he pledged to support the project, only for him to disappoint me again – after placing so much trust in his words and hoping he would make amends for his earlier failed promise.

After my visit to him, I excitingly posted on my social media platforms about his willingness to support the project.

I must admit that, it was extremely frustrating that an impression was created that Dr. Oteng had supported the successful concert that took place at the Grand Arena over the weekend and I felt the need to clear the air.

Nonetheless, I apologize sincerely to Dr. Oteng for bringing this out in the public domain.

I have learnt my lesson not to depend on man and indeed, when I turned back to God, he surprised me and made ‘Rhythms of Africa’, arguably one of the best events in Ghana thus far.

God bless you, Sir!

On Saturday, December 9, 2023, Sonnie Badu in partnership with Image Bureau, an events company founded by media mogul George Quaye, electrified the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Center in Accra with a remarkable gospel musical concert “Rhythms of Africa” despite the finacial challenges they faced.

How Taylor Swift became the Trojan horse of academia

0

Taylor Swift once said that if she were not a record-breaking, hit-making, three-time-Grammy-album-of-the-year winning superstar (our adjectives, not hers), she would’ve liked to have returned to the classroom.

“I would have gone to college, and I would probably be involved with a form of business where words and ideas are at the forefront,” she told GQ in 2015. “Such as marketing.”

She might be a bit too famous now to sit in on a business class for a marketing degree. But her music and persona have proven ripe for academic dissection on college campuses, amongst Swifties or otherwise.

Universities across the US, from Harvard to the University of Texas at Austin to Stanford, are now offering courses on Swift’s body of work and the decade-plus-long discourse her work and life have inspired. It’s a fitting honor for the singer-songwriter, whose stardom and success have reached new heights in 2023.

Arizona State this semester offered a course on the psychology of Swift’s songs. At the University of Florida, honors students will study the role of women in popular music beginning with Swift and moving onto Dolly Parton and Aretha Franklin.

At UC Berkeley, she’s inspired a business course in artistic entrepreneurship for her meticulous crafting of her own image and the lengths she’s gone to to own her work. And, naturally, the wordsmith has also inspired a bevy of English classes comparing her work to that of titans of the Western canon, from Shakespeare to Yeats.

Taylor Swift is something of an academic Trojan horse — including her name in a course description might immediately grab students’ attention, but instructors know now how to engage students by framing a potentially heady subject through the lens of possibly the most famous woman on Earth (or at the very least, Time’s “Person of the Year” for 2023).

“(Swift) gives us this lever to talk about what we’re otherwise having more difficulty convincing people is important,” said Elizabeth Scala, a professor of medieval romance, historiography and culture at the University of Texas at Austin, who next semester will reprise her literary studies course that uses Swift’s songbook as one of its primary texts.

The student response has been rapturous: Melina Jimenez, a senior lecturer who’s teaching the upcoming Swift course at the University of Florida, said her course, capped at 15 students, filled within seconds once registration opened.

Per instructors who teach her work, Swift’s music can do what many academics have tried and failed to do before — get students genuinely excited to learn something. It’s also much easier to write an essay about Chaucer when you’re comparing his work to one of Swift’s many earworms.

Swift’s appeal to students has made classes engaging and exciting

Before teaching their respective classes on Swift, the singer-songwriter had infiltrated instructors’ lives in various ways: Scala’s younger daughter is a diehard Swiftie and quizzes her mother on her favorite “Taylor’s Version” vault tracks. Jimenez listened in on Swift-centric conversations between her students but couldn’t decipher their meaning due to her not being a Swiftie.

“She’s the last monoculture,” Scala said. “Everybody can come together and enjoy (her music). It’s both highly specific and biographical but also really, really relatable to anyone.”

Scala’s literary studies class used to get students hooked through J.K. Rowling’s wildly popular “Harry Potter” series, but she was growing bored with the curriculum she’d built around the boy who lived. Then, in late 2021, Scala along with millions watched the premiere of Swift’s “All Too Well” short film, depicting a relationship gone sour set to the new, lengthier version of a song from Swift’s album “Red.”

While listening to “All Too Well,” Scala started, nearly inadvertently, drawing a curriculum around the song. She heard in its lyrics comparisons to the works of Homer. She found Swift playing with different literary forms and traditions. Even the debate between which version of the song was the true iteration felt like its own lesson.

“That’s when the popcorn went off in my head,” Scala said.

She asked her daughter, the Swiftie, to be sure the Swift-centric course would be as exciting to fans as it was to her, an academic. Her daughter told her it would likely be one of the most popular courses at the University of Texas at Austin.

The first iteration of her Swift course, called “The Taylor Swift Songbook,” was offered in 2022. It was one of the first Swift-themed classes taught at a major university, along with New York University’s course that explored “the appeal and aversions” of Swift, taught by Rolling Stone journalist Brittany Spanos.

Suddenly, Scala’s students were finding new layers to appreciate about “Romeo and Juliet,” one of the Shakespeare plays to which high schoolers are most often subjected. When Scala reframed Romeo and Juliet’s first meeting like a song — uttering flowery quatrains at each other, the lovebirds make a sonnet, she said — her students finally found something new and exciting in the centuries-old text they found boring just a few years earlier. (It helps, too, that Swift incorporated Shakespeare’s doomed lovers into one of her most popular early songs.)

Part of the reason why Jimenez is offering her course at UF is to better understand the intense idolatry that follows Swift, she said. Swift’s fame has only multiplied in the years since her debut — even after “1989,” which many critics assumed was Swift’s artistic peak.

Then, in the pandemic came “Folklore” and “Evermore,” folk-influenced records featuring well-regarded indie artists like Bon Iver and The National. After that, came “Taylor’s Versions,” re-recordings of her albums with masters she did not have ownership of, and “Midnights.” And then, this year, she kicked off the blockbuster Eras Tour, the highest-grossing concert tour in history. Oh, and she recorded the tour for a film version of her concert, which became its own phenomenon.

Jimenez may not have been a born and bred Swiftie like many of her students, but she understood the cultural impact of women artists who preceded Swift — Parton, Franklin and Billie Holiday are regarded as feminist heroes who’ve irrevocably changed their industry and art.

“More than anything else, selfishly, I want to learn what makes Swift so interesting for young people,” Jimenez said. “But I also want to find connections with other women artists who have stirred similar feelings with older generations, and hopefully introduce (them to) students (who) hadn’t given (them) much thought because they hadn’t spent the same time with their lyrics.”

The classes ask hard questions about Swift, too

These Swift-centric classes aren’t about idol worship, though they are often heavily populated (and often taught) by Swifties.

Katherine Jeng, a student at Rice University who this semester taught the one-credit class “Miss Americana: The Evolution and Lyrics of Taylor Swift,” told CNN she wanted her curriculum to acknowledge criticisms of Taylor. This includes accusations of leveraging “rainbow capitalism,” or publicly supporting the LGBTQ community for financial gain, on the album “Lover,” or drawing ire for remaining publicly apolitical until after the 2016 election.

She wanted these conversations, similar to the ones she and her fellow students were having outside the classroom, to take place while encouraging students that it’s okay to still love a pop culture colossus who’s a work-in-progress.

“I wanted to make sure we allowed for space to recognize how she’s learning and growing as a person and as a celebrity,” she said.

Taking Swift seriously, flaws and all, has been a major element of her public reappraisal since “Reputation,” her 2017 album recorded after a public flap with Kanye West and his then-wife Kim Kardashian. She’s been a critical darling throughout her career, but her public relationships have often outshone whatever art she’s making. Her early material’s focus on girlhood, young love and heartbreak, among other familiar themes to anyone who’s been 16, hasn’t always been considered serious work worthy of recognition.

But Ava Jeffs has always taken Swift seriously. The Stanford sophomore views each of her albums as self-contained storybooks, with their own worlds, characters, motifs. She’s grown up with Swift, relating more to her music the older she gets. She even wrote her Stanford application essay on Swift’s song “Clean,” the final track on her renowned “1989,” which she rerecorded this year.

“(Swift) kind of, in a way, helped me get here,” Jeffs told CNN.

In the spring, she’ll teach a course about Swift’s narrative storytelling through song. She sees Swift as a lifelong English teacher, in a way, and her close reads of Swift’s songs have prepared her for her first time teaching, she said.

“They can get as much out of the work as I did, and as I do now,” Jeffs said. “They can use that in their own life to process things. That’s what people get from stories and songs — someone putting into words what you can’t sometimes. I think that’s what Taylor’s always done.”

Trevor Noah to host the 2024 Grammy Awards

0

Trevor Noah will take center stage again to host the 2024 Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy revealed on Wednesday night.

The former host of The Daily Show revealed on his podcast today that he will return for a fourth time as master of ceremonies for the 66th annual fete. He will also serve as a producer on the show.

Previously, Noah hosted the show in 2021, 2022 and earlier this year.

“I think it’s also important to acknowledge something. I’m hosting the Grammys,” Noah concurrently announced on his podcast “What Now? With Trevor Noah.” “I’m excited about that, yeah, it’s a lot of fun. I enjoy the Grammys because I get to watch the show in person and then experience and comment on it in person while it is happening.”

Nominees for the 2024 Grammys are led by SZA, who received nine nods for her blockbuster album “SOS” and appears in three of the big four categories (with the exception of best new artist, of course). Behind her, Victoria Monét, mixing engineer Serban Ghenea, and Phoebe Bridgers tie for seven nominations, with the latter receiving nods as both a solo artist and as part of her group Boygenius.

Eight musicians tied for six nominations: producer Jack Antonoff, Jon Batiste, Boygenius, Brandy Clark, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift. Overall, the top three general-field categories were largely dominated by women, as only three went to a recording from a male artist out of the 24 nominations.

Of the potential big moments at the 2024 Grammys, Swift could potentially net the most album of the year wins if “Midnights” sweeps the category and secures her a fourth victory. “Barbie: The Soundtrack” could also clean up with its 12 nominations, including four out of the five slots in the songs written for visual media category.

The 66th annual Grammy Awards will take place on February 4, 2024. The show is set to be broadcast from Crypto.com Arena and will air on CBS and Paramount+.

I’m fathering a child I know it’s not mine – Salinko exposes ex-lover after DNA

0

Renowned Kumawood actor, Abraham Kofi Davies well-known as Salinko has disclosed that he has taken the responsibility of fathering a child he knows is not his since he presently doesn’t have the means to do a DNA test.

Speaking in a recent interview with Emelia Brobbey on Okukuseku, the comic actor explained that he has found himself in such a situation because his ex-girlfriend wasn’t truthful with him about the paternity of the pregnancy and took full responsibility for it.

He mentioned that he was initially excited about the news of being a father since they lost their first pregnancy.

So to make things easier for her in the second pregnancy, he brought the lady to stay at his plush house in Kumasi while he worked in Accra.

However, just four months after his partner gave birth, the truth emerged that the latter was dating two men when he received a distressing call while working in Accra about a man who had stormed his house, accusing him of snatching his woman and child.

The comic actor said he instructed his girlfriend to vacate his house while he returned to Accra to address the situation. To his surprise, the accuser turned out to be a colleague Kumawood actor.

With the development, he demanded an explanation from his ex-girlfriend, who, in the presence of her family, confessed to double dating.

“After I sent her packing, she brought in her father to apologise on her behalf. I told them I am already attached to the child so I will continue taking care until he grows and I can afford a DNA. But deep down, we all know I am not the father,” Salinko revealed in an interview on Adom TV‘s Okukuseku.

Reggie Zippy cries for not seeing his kids for almost a year after divorce

0

UK-based Ghanaian musician, Reggie Zippy has taken to social media to voice out his frustration about how he hasn’t been allowed to see his children for almost a year.

Recall that a few months ago, Reggie’s marriage to his ex-wife Edith Ward came to an end after 15 years.

After their nasty divorce, Reggie who claims to be taking good care of his kids said he can’t fathom why he is being denied from seeing or talking to them and he is close to giving up on the battle to see his kids.

“For how long should a father continue trying to re-establish his relationship with his children after the breakdown of marriage? Because at this very moment, I am very close to giving up on this unfair battle and focusing on the next chapter of my life.

“I am only human and GOD knows how much I have tried to do right by my children, their mother and entire families both mum and dad sides,” he shared.

The “Adoma” hitmaker declared to accept his loss and move on with his life if he is not allowed to see his kids before the end of this year.

“If I don’t speak with my children by 31st DECEMBER 2023, I will accept my losses and consider myself as a DEADBEAT DAD from 2024 and beyond because even GOD KNOWS WHAT I HAVE BEEN THROUGH SINCE January 2007 till date. I Love you DIOR🩷, I Love you NOLAN💙 and I Love IKHON❤️,” he added.

Lithium mining: Elon Musk to visit Ghana?

0

The Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Tesla, Elon Musk, may have been presented with yet another reason to visit Ghana following advanced plans to mine lithium in the West African country.

According to the Member of Parliament for Anyaa Sowutuom, Dickson Adomako Kissi, it will not be a surprise to see the billionaire investor visiting Ghana soon as a result of the importance of lithium to the operations of his company.

“I am happy that something from Ghana will go to space because lithium is one of the things that help in space exploration. Talking about batteries and all. And from the look of things, we might soon receive a visit from Elon Musk.

“Ghana is now closer to California due to lithium,” he stated while appearing as a guest on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo morning show.

He urged the government to ensure bonding with societies related to lithium and also called for measures to locally add value to the raw materials mined.

The government of Ghana has signed an agreement with Barari DV Limited for the mining of Ghana’s lithium.

However, details of the deal have attracted public criticism on the benefits Ghana is likely to gain.

According to critics, including the IEA, the agreement which gives Ghana a 10% royalty is a shortchange against the development of the country. But the government on the other hand describes the deal as the best Ghana has ever signed for the mining of the nation’s natural resources.

Chris Rock declines offer to host Golden Globes 2024 awards after infamous Oscars slap

0

The 2024 Golden Globes may be facing a hosting crisis, as A-listers Chris Rock, Ali Wong, and the “Smartless” podcast trio of Will Arnett, Sean Hayes, and Jason Bateman have all reportedly declined the offer to helm the Hollywood ceremony. Rock’s decision, following the infamous Oscars slap incident where Will Smith took to the stage in response to a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, comes as no surprise.

Wong, a comedian and actress known for her outspoken humor, was also approached but ultimately declined the gig. Similarly, the “Smartless” co-hosts, known for their chemistry and comedic timing, have also passed on the opportunity.

The Golden Globes, historically a star-studded event, has faced declining viewership and controversy in recent years, including accusations of ethical lapses and a lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization behind the awards. This has led to many actors and studios boycotting the ceremony in recent years.

While Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who have successfully co-hosted the Globes four times in the past, remain a possibility, a source close to the duo told CNN, “They would never do it (again). They’re done.”

The reasons for the A-list rejections are varied, according to industry insiders. Some cite the thankless nature of the job, with its long hours, demanding expectations, and potential for negative publicity. Others point to the “politics” involved and the pressure to please both the HFPA and the Hollywood audience.

Regardless of the specific reasons, the lack of interest from major stars raises questions about the future of the Golden Globes. Can the ceremony, once a prestigious and highly anticipated event, regain its footing without the participation of Hollywood’s top talent? Only time will tell.

18 brands cut ties with Sean “Diddy” Combs following alleged sexual assault

0

Several companies are reportedly cutting ties with Sean “Diddy” Combs following the string of sexual abuse allegations brought against the music mogul.

Eighteen companies have terminated their partnership with Combs’ e-commerce platform Empower Global, according to a report from Rolling Stone published Sunday.

Founded by Combs in 2021, Empower Global aims to promote Black-owned businesses with a digital marketplace that creates “opportunities for Black entrepreneurs to build and scale successful businesses and for everyone to ‘Shop Black’ daily with ease,” according to its official website.

One company that’s parted ways with Empower Global is lifestyle and fashion brand House of Takura, which confirmed its departure from the company in an email to USA TODAY Monday.

“We take the allegations against Mr. Combs very seriously and find such behavior abhorrent and intolerable,” founder Annette Njau told Rolling Stone. “We believe in victims’ rights and support victims in speaking their truth, even against the most powerful of people.”

Undergarment and shapewear line Nuudii System has also terminated its professional relationship with Combs’ company. In an email to USA TODAY Monday, Nuudii System CEO Annette Azan said the decision was quickly prompted by the allegations of sexual assault against Combs.

“Nuudii System is a women’s brand, (owned and run by me and my two daughters). We believe women and stand in support of them,” Azan said. “Frankly, we are sick of men trying to control our bodies and using their power to harm us.”

USA TODAY has reached out to Combs’ representative for comment.

Other companies that have reportedly left Empower Global include skincare brand Tsuri, jewelry label Fulaba, footwear line Rebecca Allen and sunscreen brand Baby Donna. USA TODAY has reached out to representatives of these companies for comment.

The exodus of these companies isn’t the only shake-up in Combs’ business life. Last month, cable TV network Revolt (which Combs co-founded) revealed that Combs stepped down as chairman of the company. The network did not disclose the reason for Combs’ departure in its statement.

What is Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs being accused of?

Combs, one the most influential hip-hop producers and executives of the past three decades, has been caught up in a whirlwind series of legal battles, including a bombshell lawsuit by ex-girlfriend Cassie that accused him of rape, sex trafficking and physical abuse. The pair settled the case Nov. 17, just one day after Cassie filed her lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

After Combs and Cassie’s settlement, two more women came forward to accuse him of sexual abuse. Both suits were filed in late November on the eve of the expiration of the Adult Survivors Act, a New York law permitting victims of sexual abuse a one-year window to file civil action regardless of the statute of limitations.

The filings detail acts of sexual assault, beatings and forced drugging allegedly committed in the early 1990s by Combs, then a talent director, party promoter and rising figure in New York City’s hip-hop community.

Last week, an unnamed woman filed an additional lawsuit against Combs on accusations of rape and sex trafficking, alleging Combs and two others gang raped her when she was 17 years old. Harve Pierre, former president of Combs’ Bad Boy Entertainment, was also named in the suit.

“For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy,” Combs said in a statement at the time. “Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”

Sarkodie’s ‘Rapperholic Exhibition’ an eye opener

0

In July this year, Jay-Z, his imprint Roc-Nation and the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) put together ‘Book of HOV’—a public exhibition chronicling Jay-Z’s musical legacy and it was unequivocally one of the best highlights of the year in pop culture.

I knew that, if there was any Ghanaian artiste who had what it takes to replicate what the American superstar did, it had to be Sarkodie!

Critically acclaimed, longevity, consistency, dominance, influence and one of the most decorated acts of all time, it was just fitting and grand for Sarkodie’s musical legacy, which spans almost two decades to be on display.

And in an industry and country where we have no dedicated museums for the creative industry and no ‘Walk of Fame’ concept, the Jay-Z-BPL model is the way to go.

Storied Career

Active in 2005, first album in 2009, Sarkodie’s career has been golden and the accomplishments struck thus far are enough to bask over and celebrate.

It is no ordinary feat that in an industry where new ‘Kings’ are made easily and ‘old ‘ luminaries are retired early, Sarkodie’s longevity and ability to remain dominant, relevant and ‘hungry’ needs a louder touting.

It is germane to have the general populace have a stint of such a stellar legacy; the projects, plethora of awards, sold-out concerts, philanthropic work, significant collaborations, and everything else that has defined the musician thus far in his career.

Solid Partnership

Last week, it was Image Bureau, Aprils Communication partnering with National Theatre to offer one of the best theatricals of the year. This time, Sarkodie’s Sarkcess imprint has collaborated with Eagle Plug and Mix Design Hub, two firms that curated the first ever ‘Rapperholic Exhibition’.

Inspired by the ‘Book of HOV’ exhibition, Eagle Plug, and Mix Design Hub first picked the right artiste, one with too many accolades and credits to showcase. They also timed it right, just days to one of the biggest concerts in Ghana, the 10th anniversary of ‘Rapperholic Concert’ appropriately themed, ‘“Rapperholic: The Rebirth”.

The exhibition hosted by the Mix Design Hub in Osu is open for just five days and although the duration is short, it is understandable because it is arguably the first time this is being done in contemporary times and there’s also the issue of space.

Hopefully, such a brilliant showcase would get the necessary support to ensure an extended version or probably moved to a bigger space that can accommodate many.

Impressive Organisation

The exhibition has been beautifully put together to align with the personality of the artiste, and the zeal and commitment of ‘SarkNatives’ to see to its success by helping with the process has been commendable.

Firstly, there was a private session that was attended by some high-profile personalities, business moguls, Dr. Osei Kwame, Dr. Ofori Sarpong, venerated actress, Nadia Buari, and a host of others. Intriguingly, the spouse and the kids of the artiste also graced the occasion.

The legendary Amakye Dede was also present on Tuesday for a tour plus a performance. The line-up of activities includes a Student Tour, a Fireside Chat, a Curators Dialogue, and a Podcast session.

The exhibition closes on the 16th of December 2023!

Way To Go

There are quite a lot of Ghanaian artistes who have worked, blazed the trail, and cemented their legacies that need proper showcase to the rest of the world.

Sarkodie, together with his partners got inspired and run with the idea and made it work. Others can easily replicate the move!

Creatives should not always wait for the government to take the initiative. With the right partnership, resources, and support, anything is possible to fix in this industry.

The biggest arenas across the world that host major entertainment events are not owned by the government but by private entities.

Private entities and accomplished business magnates as well as these creatives can capitalise on the convivial atmosphere provided by the government and take bold steps in realising some projects and initiatives.

Sarkodie, Eagle Plug, and Mix Design did not have to wait on any governmental support to make this work. Make a move!

Will Smith’s ‘Holy Slap’ saved our marriage – Jada Smith reveals

Jada Pinkett Smith and her husband Will Smith got their celestial intercession thanks to the “Men In Black” actor’s Oscars night slap of presenter Chris Rock.

Pinkett Smith recently revealed that the infamous slap strengthened the couple’s teetering relationship.

“That moment of the s— hitting the fan is when you see where you really are,” she told the Daily Mail’s You Magazine. “After all those years trying to figure out if I would leave Will’s side, it took that slap for me to see I will never leave him. Who knows where our relationship would be if that hadn’t happened?”

The “Girls Trip” actor also mentioned that she almost didn’t attend the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, but added she was glad she did.

“I call it the ‘holy slap’ now because so many positive things came after it,” she said.

While the event may have had a positive effect on the duo’s marriage, the moment led to public scrutiny and Smith having to repeatedly apologize. It also led to his resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a ban from attending the Oscars ceremony — and all other academy events — for the next 10 years.

Pinkett Smith told “Today” co-host Hoda Kotb that she was surprised that the “Bad Boys” star referred to her as his wife on Oscars night when he told Chris Rock to “keep my wife’s name out your f— mouth.”

“First of all, I’m really shocked … we haven’t called each other ‘husband’ and ‘wife’ in a long time. What is going on right now?” she said in the October interview.

Will’s surprise appearance at her book tour in October further reinforces their commitment. He acknowledged the challenges they’ve faced, describing their relationship as “brutiful” — a combination of brutal and beautiful.

Despite the ups and downs, the couple remains open about their long and complex journey together.
