Ayariga’s APC will go into oblivion after 2016 elections – PNC Chairman

0
Hassan Ayariga's APC received a provisional certificate from the EC on Wednesday, February 10
Hassan Ayariga was endorsed as APC’s flagbearer on Monday, June 13

The Greater Accra Region Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bala Maikanakan, has watered down the chances of Hassan Ayariga’s All People’s Congress (APC), saying the former PNC flagbearer appears not to be serious about his political career except wanting to be relevant in Ghanaian politics.

Bala Maikankan while speaking with Bright Kwesi Asempa, the host of news and current affairs programme Ghana Dadwen on Onua FM said Dr. Hassan Ayariga has rushed in forming APC out of populism and selfish desire.

“What is the rush about, if it is not for self-centeredness,” he opined.

“Look at Dr Edward Mahama he had lost a lot of elections but he still remains with PNC. That is loyalty but if you don’t have the party at heart but want to enjoy the fame, you will run and form a party that will not last,” he added.

Asked if he has anything against the person of the founder of APC, the regional chairman of PNC responded in the negative, saying he (Hassan) is respected by all in the party, and supported by even the old, but added that the newest flagbearer had fallen out with the rank and file of Dr Hilla Limann’s party, resulting in petty squabbles which were threatening to divide the party.

After being issued a final certificate by the Electoral Commission of Ghana to operate as a fully fledged political party, APC in fulfillment of the electoral law held its first ever national delegates’ congress on Monday, June 13 to elect national officers ahead of this year’s polls.

By popular acclamation, Dr. Hassan Ayariga was endorsed as flagbearer.

The congress was attended by hundreds of people and other political party leaders including National Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) Prof. Edmund Delle and 2012 Presidential Candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah also known as JOY2012.

A few minors were spotted at the congress ground.

The Greater Accra Region Chairman of PNC maintained that the APC’s performance in this year’s election will not only be abysmal but mark the end of the political career of its leader and founder.

“Hassan will not perform more than Dr. Mahama, never, what is the root of APC but you Asempa you know the forefathers of PNC. I don’t know what is with Hassan, I don’t have anything against him but he rushes in taking decisions which later turn out to be fruitless. I pity those who are following him now. He will not get any meaningful result.”

ONE MILLION VOTES

Mr Maikanakan, however, revealed on Ghana Dadwen what he called ‘Agenda One Million Vote’ in the Greater Accra Region this year.

He explained that both NDC and NPP have been boasting of track records, forgetting that PNC was there before, hence the determination to campaign on the previous track records of the party which will be a precursor to achieving one million-vote agenda in the Greater Accra Region.

“NDC is saying they want to get one million votes in the Ashanti Region and strike 50/50 with NPP in the Eastern Region but I will tell you that we will take Greater Accra and that will mark our victory, it is new deal, new beginning and new force.

“We have laid the foundation and the parties that came after us built on it and it is time to take it from them and finished what we have started,” Bala concluded.

National Service not job placement – NSS PRO

0

NSS

The Public Relations Officer for the National Service Secretariat Ambrose Antsiwaa says the National Service Scheme is designed to serve as contribution to the country and shouldn’t be seen as job placement.

Ghanaian students, who graduate from accredited tertiary institutions, are required under law to do a one-year national service to the country.

Speaking on 3FM’s students’ show Campus Rocks, Mr. Antsiwaa answered questions from two guests, Takyiwaa and Asantewaa, on their challenges with the system.

Issues discussed included an overview of the National Service Scheme such as the registration process and the payment system.

There was the question about who qualifies to do national service and how guaranteed is the national service person to the work field in which he or she studied.

“I have said that the beginnings of national service were in the hinterlands, carrying cocoa and other foodstuffs like yam, cocoyam, cassava bringing them to the urban centers and some were even constructing roads and all that,” the NSS PRO said.

“The first question anybody would want to ask is whether they went to school to learn how to carry cocoa so if you understand it from that point then you know that national service is not about what you learnt and what you are going to do for national service.

“The principle of national service is to serve your nation by being posted to where your services are needed for the development of the country and it is not job placement”.

The show was moderated by Rooteye and other co-hosts like Naya, Hajarah and Jerome. Music was by DJ Jay Dee.

IGP John Kudalor
Supt. Arthur (behind) wants Mr. John Kudalor himself to publicly announce the award

An honorary Doctorate Degree has been conferred on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), John Kudalor, by an unknown University based in the United States of America.

Information available to Onua FM’s Yen Sempa indicates that the ceremony took place yesterday [Monday] in the USA.

Although Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur confirmed the report, he would not be the one to reveal the identity of the university in question.

But he disclosed to Onua FM’s Yen Sempa that the IGP had told him he had been tipped to receive the award.

Supt Arthur however fell short of mentioning the name of the country the award took place, but admitted that Mr. Kudalor is outside the country.

Nonetheless, Supt. Arthur claimed he has seen pictures of the IGP receiving the award but he preferred to defer the announcement to the IGP himself.

Mr John Kudalor was confirmed as the substantive Inspector General of Police on the 18thFebruary this year.

In November, 2015, President Mahama appointed him in an acting position to succeed Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan.

Mr. Kudalor has 20 years wealth of experience in the police service and was in charge of monitoring in the 2012 general elections.

Reeva’s father says Pistorius ‘must pay’

0

Oscar Pistorius

South African athlete Oscar Pistorius must pay for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, her father has told a judge, breaking down in tears.

Pistorius was found guilty of murdering Ms Steenkamp after a court overturned an earlier manslaughter verdict.

The sentencing hearing – expected to conclude by Friday – will decide if he will face a jail term of 15 years.

Barry Steenkamp asked for photos of his daughter’s body to be made public so people could see the wounds.

Correspondents say Mr Steenkamp’s voice broke and tears streamed down his face as he said that he thought about his daughter “morning, noon and night… every hour”.

The 73-year-old told Pretoria’s High Court that he had had no contact with Pistorius, but said that wife June had been able to forgive the double-amputee athlete.

“You must understand why forgiving doesn’t exonerate you from the crime you committed,” he said.

Mr Steenkamp also told the court how the couple had been left in financial “dire straits” after their daughter’s death.

Their landlady had served them with an eviction notice two weeks afterwards – which was why they had initially accepted monthly payments of 6,500 rand ($425; £300) from Pistorius.

This was meant to have been confidential and he said he was “disgusted” that Pistorius’ legal team had brought it up during the trial.

When questioned by Pistorius’ lawyer, Barry Roux, Mr Steenkamp confirmed that he and his wife had declined an offer to meet the athlete.

“The time will come and I would like to talk to Oscar,” he said.

Pistorius, 29, killed Ms Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013 after firing four times through a locked toilet door.

The athlete has always maintained he believed he was shooting at an intruder.

He was initially jailed for manslaughter in 2014 and was released into house arrest after a year, but his conviction was changed to murder after the prosecution appealed.

Pistorius was released from prison last October and allowed to serve out the remainder of his initial sentence under house arrest at his uncle’s property in Pretoria.

The South African made history by becoming the first amputee sprinter to compete at the Olympics, in London in 2012.

He competed in the 400m, wearing carbon-fibre blades to run against able-bodied athletes.

More than half of police applicants not qualified -Supt. Arthur

0

Police recruitmentMore than half of the almost 25,000 prospective applicants to be enlisted into the Ghana Police Service (GPS) do not qualify to be in the Service, the Public Affairs Director, Superintendent Cephas Arthur has revealed.

According to him, most of the applicants did not read the requirements for the enlistment while others bought the forms with no intention of being enlisted.

Supt. Cephas Arthur made the revelation on Onua FM’s ‘Yen Sempa’, hosted by Kwame Karikari.

Police Service, has since 2012 not recruited personnel but more than half of the applicants across the nation do not meet the standards.

Supt Arthur said some of the applicants bought the forms in trust of God while others just decided to try their luck by purchasing the scratch card of GHS100 non-refundable.

He further denied reports that National Service personnel engaged under the Urban Traffic Module would be given preferential treatment although they have acquired the basic skills in policing.

He said the service personnel were taken through maintenance of lives, apprehension, traffic control and other basic skills in policing but that does not qualify them to be enlisted into the police.

He explained that they must go through the enlistment processes to be able to join the service.

Nobody does business with a poor man – Chief Dele

0

CHIEF DELE 2

Chief Dele Momodu publisher of popular lifestyle magazine Ovation believes nobody will do business with a poor.

Chief Dele Momodu, a media owner and businessman and a one-time presidential aspirant in Nigeria has had the experience of going through a different phase in life before he became a successful businessman.

Speaking exclusively to 3news.com, Chief Dele stated that business involves money which a poor man wouldn’t be able to bring on board. He also explained that there are a lot of factors which come into play during business.

“Your courage, comportment, appearance would affect how people will do business with you

“If I go now to negotiate with an MD of a bank in Ghana and I start by saying I’m a poor man, he wouldn’t talk to me.

“Business is about money and even if you are intelligent your appearance at all time counts. Looking good does not mean a lot of money.

“I’m wearing my fabric this morning and I’m sure it’s less than maybe GHc40 but the way I’m wearing it with my cap makes me look like a chief but if I came here wearing tattered clothes nobody would have spoken to me.

“In business you may be lucky to find willing partners and if you don’t just go into it alone and later people will come and put money into your business.

“Nobody does business with a poor man because business is about money”.

Kids at congress are APC future leaders – Ayariga

0

Hassan-Ayariga

The flagbearer of All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga has rebuffed cynicism targeted at his party concerning the number of children that thronged the party’s congress yesterday as he extols the future of his party.

He latched onto the popular catchphrase that the youth are the future leaders, revealing he was particularly excited by the presence of the children.

“I am glad people even brought their children there; they will be APC future leaders,” he told Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show Tuesday.

The congress among others acclaimed Hassan Ayariga as the presidential candidate of APC, a party he founded, for the 2016 general elections.

Mr. Ayariga is however livid a section of the media reported that the children who showed up at the congress outnumbered the delegates.

76ac119b-d4f8-465b-9ce9-8cda62507580“Let us understand that politics is politics, people will always do propaganda in any kind of political games. But I will tell you nobody in his right senses will ask a child of 12 years or 10 years to go and vote.

“Please I beg you in the name of God let’s do decent politics. We want to change Ghana and not to destroy; we in the APC we don’t believe in that.

“…anytime you do things there are people who look for negative things to write. And that is the headlines they want. How can you come to a congress, covered the whole thing and all you could write is Ayariga holds kids congress.

“Does it make sense to you? Somebody reading this thing will even undermine your intelligence,” he flared up.

The APC presidential candidate early on explained circumstances that got the children including his five kids into the hall. Among others he mentioned that due to the fact that it was raining outside, the children ran into the hall where the event was taking place.

“Assuming I am a delegate and I get into the hall and I want my kids to come in, what do you think I will do? Common sense will tell you that I will call somebody and give him the card and say go out there and give it to my kids to come in; that is common sense, but it doesn’t mean the delegates’ [tags] were given to the kids.”

Russia fans deported from Euro 2016

Russia fans

Groups of Russia fans are being deported from France after repeated scenes of violence at Euro 2016.

French police blamed 150 “well-trained” Russian hooligans who had been able to evade arrest for clashes in Marseille in the run-up to Saturday’s 1-1 draw between England and Russia.

Six English fans were jailed on Monday for their roles in the disorder.

Uefa has threatened to disqualify both teams from the tournament if there is any further violence by fans.

Alexandr Shprygin, head of the Russian Union of Supporters, said 29 fans were being escorted to the airport.

France Prime Minister Manuel Valls said some football fans “cannot stay on national territory”.

Thirty-five people have been injured – most of them England fans and four seriously – while a total of 20 people were arrested after three days of disorder in Marseille.

Football Association chairman Greg Dyke expressed “serious concerns” about security in Lille, where England fans and Russian supporters are set to gather over the next three days.

England fans are likely to travel to Lille ahead of Thursday’s match against Wales in the nearby smaller town of Lens, while Russia play Slovakia in the city itself on Wednesday.

Shprygin claimed he and 28 other representatives of fan groups had been held near Cannes and put on a bus.

Dr Joel Rookwood, a senior lecturer in football business at Southampton Solent, says Russian hooligans will “prioritise fighting the English rather than watching their own team play”.

“For these very violent hooligans, it is a sport,” he told BBC Radio 5 live. “The battle for them is more significantly won off the pitch.”

“They’re very well organised and ruthlessly effective. They don’t seem to fear the police.”

Exchange of information critical to addressing tax issues – GRA

0

TaxTax authorities and African governments have been urged to adopt effective information exchange systems based on proper implementation of international standards of transparency.

This is necessary because exchange of information among member countries ensure that corporate bodies and individual taxpayers would have no safe haven to hide their income and assets but pay the right amount of taxes.

Mr George Blankson, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority, said this at the opening of a three-day first African Tax Administrators Forum (ATAF) consultative meeting of African Competent Authorities in Accra.

The meeting would enable delegates to understand the role of the Office of the Competent Authority to the revenue administration and the benefits of ATAF members in utilising the exchange of information programme.

Mr Blankson said effective information exchange required an established legal basis for exchanging tax information with other jurisdictions as well as clear and efficient internal processes.

He said the exchange of information for tax purposes had become a key part of risk management of revenue collection and administration.

“Even though globalisation generates greater opportunities for the increase of wealth it also results in greater risk to domestic revenue mobilisation through tax invasion, aggressive tax planning and tax avoidance,” he said.

He said delegates were expected to put in place the necessary policies, legislations and information systems to engage in effective exchange of information as well as safeguard the confidentiality of information provided under exchange of information.

Mrs Elizabeth Storbeck, the Programme Co-ordinator of ATAF Exchange of Information Programme, said African countries faced various challenges in respect of the effectiveness of their tax systems.

She said the overall revenue yields and voluntary compliance of African countries were low and the taxation of international transactions in terms of transfer pricing had become difficult.

Mrs Storbeck urged tax authorities in Africa to develop sound policies that would promote efficient and effective tax administration to improve the living standards of the citizenry.

ATAF was launched on November 18, 2009 by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda at a conference attended by heads and senior officials of 31 African tax administrations, nine development partners and 18 development partner organisations.

Cocobod angered by WAMCO sale

0

Cocoa

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has called on the public to ignore advertisements on the sale of assets of West African Mills Company Limited (WAMCO).

The Sekondi-Takoradi-based cocoa processing firm is said to be undergoing liquidation spearheaded by Fidelity Securities Limited (FSL).

But COCOBOD says it is “without its knowledge, consent and approval and should be ignored”.

A release from the Public Affairs Department of the Board on Monday, June 13 said though it has 40 per cent stake in WAMCO, its conceded suggestion of an official liquidation was kicked against for a majority option of a private liquidation at the last shareholder meeting.

“The issue regarding the nature of the liquidation has therefore not been resolved and same is outstanding.”

COCOBOD, therefore, warns that “any person or institution that enters into such a deal would be doing so at its own peril”.

GHANA SRONGEST
GHANA SRONGEST

The recent rains have further exposed how cities in Ghana, especially the capital Accra, have been poorly designed and awfully managed.

At least 15 deaths have been recorded across the country since the rains set in few weeks ago. Hundreds of people have been displaced and properties worth millions have been lost to the devastating floods.

This is a recurring issue with an equally habitual lip service assurance from those in authorities.

When would the country get a saviour to snatch us from the hands of floods?
