Apology over Zuma cartoon exam question

0

zuma cartoonA South African school has apologised for setting an exam question using a satirical cartoon of President Jacob Zuma floating in a pool full of money.

Students had to identify the man in the picture and say whether they would vote for him or not, using the cartoon “as a source” in their answers.

One answer calling Mr Zuma “too stupid… and selfish with money” to vote for was given two ticks.

The education department for Gauteng province has welcomed the apology.

It says it began investigations into the test question after a complaint from a concerned parent.

The question was part of a Grade Six English Visual Literacy Test at an independent school in the province.

The head of the school has promised to “refrain from using any cartoons that have a potential of causing any form of distress or confusion”, the department said in a statement.

The BBC’s Milton Nkosi in Johannesburg says the cartoon was drawn in November 2013 by South African cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro, known by his pen name Zapiro.

It related to the controversial security upgrades, which included a swimming pool, worth $23m (£15m) at President Zuma’s home in rural KwaZulu Natal.

Last month, the president said he would abide by a court ruling that he must repay part of the money spent on his Nklandla homestead and had never knowingly set out to “violate the constitution”.

The shower head in the cartoon is a reference to a statement Mr Zuma made during a trial in 2006 that he had taken a shower after having sex to reduce the chance of contracting HIV. He was acquitted of raping a family friend.

The opposition is pushing for corruption charges against Mr Zuma over an arms deal in 1999 to be reinstated.

Mr Zuma has always denied the allegations – and the charges were dropped just weeks before the 2009 election which led to him becoming president.

‘Africa is rising’ – President Mahama

0

Mahama AUPresident John Dramani Mahama has on the occasion of the 53rd Africa Union Day, stated there is ‘no question’ that the African continent is rising.

In a brief tweet Wednesday morning, he said: “Africa is rising, there is no question about that. Happy AU Day”.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister, Ms Hanna Tetteh, urged leaders of the continent to put in place the necessary structures to bring the private sector and civil society onboard the implementation of the AU Agenda 2063 in order to create an inclusive union.

The Agenda 2063 is a strategic framework for the socio-economic transformation of the continent over the next 50 years. It is builds on, and seeks to accelerate the implementation of past and existing continental initiatives for growth and sustainable development.

“To achieve that, we will need to create new platforms to bring on board the private sector & civil society to create an inclusive union,” Ms Tetteh said in a series of tweets Wednesday to mark the 53rd anniversary of the African Union.

She said it is imperative for African leaders to look beyond the past vision of the African Union by considering how to create a united continent and also the structures that it will require to achieve that.

“Today as we celebrate Africa Day, let’s not just look to the past vision that united Africans in our aspiration for a united continent. Let’s think about what we need to do to create that united African continent, what that structure would look like & how we’ll achieve it” she said.

She added: “In creating our united Africa, my personal view is that we should create the platforms for our people to drive policy & political integration”

Takoradi MP upset about diversion of railway funds to rebrand buses

0

Bus brandingMember of Parliament for Takoradi, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, has expressed displeasure at the use of railway funds to rebrand 116 public transport buses by the government last year.

The Metro Mass Transit buses were controversially rebranded by Smarttys at the cost of GHC3.6 million. The amount was taken from monies, which had been allocated to the Ghana Railway Development Authority for the development of the Western Corridor Rail Project.

The deal attracted backlash from Ghanaians who questioned the essence of the rebranding with pictures of some of Ghana’s past and current presidents, and the whooping amount of money involved.

GHS3.6m Smarttys bus branding contract approved within 24 hours

Speaking to 3FM in Accra Tuesday, the MP for Takoradi described the development as heartbreaking, claiming it goes to show that the president is incompetent in managing the country’s resources.

“It’s heartbreaking, especially (for) those of us in the Western Region who want the railway to be up and doing, for us to come to realize that the monies have been taken away and used to put pictures of the President on Metro Mass Buses”

He said it was no coincidence that monies meant for the development of railways were diverted to rebrand buses, noting that the owner of Smarttys, Selasie Ibrahim, is married to Alhaji Ibrahim Adams who is the Board Chairman of the Railway Development Authority.

“It means that maybe it was the husband who was telling her where the money was. It’s very disheartening and it shows how incompetent President Mahama has been in managing the resources of this country” Mr Mensah said.

Chairman of the Ghana Railway Workers Union, Godwill Ntarmah, was also not happy that monies for railway development were diverted to rebrand the buses with pictures.

He said it appeared all the efforts they made during the adminstrations of President John Kufuor and the late President John Mills as well as President John Mahama has come to naught.

“I am short of words, I don’t believe it, when we have all agreed that the Railway sector is dear to the economic development of the nation. I pray that this is not true”.

He underscored the importance of the railways to the national economy, saying “if the lines from Awaso to Takoradi were operating, we could haul bauxite effectively, we could haul cocoa, we could haul manganese …in the past, the railways employed over 10,000 workers”.

GBA appeals to JUSAG members to resume work

0

Supreme CourtThe Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has added its voice to pleas to members of the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) to suspend their indefinite strike.

The court workers embarked on the strike last Friday, citing government’s nonchalance to their demands for consolidated salaries as reason for their industrial action.

Several institutions including the Judicial Council have adjured JUSAG to call off the strike with the National Labour Commission (NLC) taking the Association to court. The Commission says the strike is illegal.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, May 24, GBA expressed concerns about the “adverse effect” of JUSAG’s action on the administration of justice in Ghana.

“The adjudication of cases nationwide has been rendered impossible and all work in our courts has virtually ground to a halt since the commencement of the strike action,” the statement signed by GBA President Benson Nutsukpui said.

“The result is that citizens seeking justice in our courts are being deprived of the audience and adjudication that they deserve and have a right to.”

It said negotiations to resolve the impasse has been “long-standing and should have been definitely and conclusively resolved much earlier than now”.

It described as becoming too recurrent situations where labour issues are not resolved on time, leading to avoidable strikes.

“It is important that the Government and the National Labour Commission attend to and address such issues with dispatch to avoid such unfortunate consequences.”

The Bar called on government to make sure that the issues to do with consolidated salaries are resolved once and for all.

“While expressing unalloyed sympathy with the cause of JUSAG, the GBA is concerned about the course of action and the probably unintended, yet grave consequences of the strike action. We, therefore, appeal to the members of JUSAG to resume work, thereby empowering their leaders   with the moral authority to conduct any negotiations and pursue their legitimate claims on their behalf.

“We are of the firm belief that as major stakeholders in the justice delivery system JUSAG will heed our plea to call off the strike.”

Ayariga threatens to take EC to court if…

Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC) Hassan Ayariga says he will sue the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) if it fails to implement its regulation to ban political parties not in good standing from contesting the 2016 elections.

The Commission has given parties up to May 31 to submit auditted reports in order to renew their certificates. The EC has also made clear its intentions to revoke the licenses of parties, which do not have offices in two-thirds of districts in the country, a regulation which has been severally contested by some parties.

Most of the parties are describing the move as discriminatory and an affront to democracy.

But in an interview with TV3, Mr Ayariga, who founded the latest political party in the country, said the EC cannot go back on its resolve especially when some parties have stretched themselves to set up offices across the length and breadth of the country.

“It will be politically bias for the EC to allow other political parties to go through while others will not be given the opportunity to go through,” he argued.

“We need serious political parties in 2016. So if the EC do not crack the whip we, the APC, will take the EC to court.”

The 2012 presidential candidate said within a short period he managed to set up 220 constituency offices and 150 district offices.

He said all the regional capitals have APC offices.

“We furnished the EC with these offices.”

He also took a swipe at the Institute for Economic Affairs (IEA) over this year’s presidential debates, which will have an exclusive one between leaders of the country’s two major parties, as proposed.

The staff of the Judicial Service have been on strike since Friday. Haruna Iddrisu (R)

The remuneration resolution meeting held between the Judicial Service Workers Association of Ghana (JUSAG) and the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations over the recent indefinite strike of the former has ended inconclusively.

JUSAG last Friday declared an indefinite nationwide strike over delays in the implementation of the consolidated salaries and emoluments of its members.

This was despite an assurance by the Ministry that JUSAG would be paid only when President John Dramani Mahama approves it.

Tuesday’s meeting was held to bring the two sides to a middle ground to resolve the strike action that has resulted in the closure of courts across the country.

A second leg of the meeting has bee scheduled to be held on Thursday, May 26.

This was made known by the President of JUSAG, Alex Nartey, in a telephone interview with Onua FM a few hours after the meeting.

JUSAG’s leadership had earlier rejected negotiations with government over the consolidated salaries, insisting that implementation was the way forward having done negotiations last year.

Speaking to Onua FM, Mr Nartey revealed that JUSAG made progress at Tuesday’s meeting, hoping for a conclusion on Thursday.

“The meeting with the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations has ended successfully with no discrepancies. We made some strides but couldn’t conclude on things. We are waiting for Thursday to achieve that,” he said.

He, therefore, assured Ghanaians to exercise restraint since his outfit was working around the clock to address the issues and bring happenings to normalcy.

Medeama handed cracking Confederation Cup group

0

Medeama SCMedeama have been handed the toughest possible draw in the CAF Confederaion Cup after they were thrown into group A alongside former champions league winners TP Mazembe.

The Ghanaian side, through to the group stage of the Confederations Cup at the second time of asking would need to dig deep in order to prolong their stay in the competition after the draw in Cairo also set them up against Tanzania’s Young Africans and MO Bejaia who are well know in Ghana for knocking out Kumasi Asante Kotoko a few years ago.

The group stage of the competition is due to run from June 17 to August 23rd. Medeama would be hoping to extend their participation beyond that and become the first Ghanaian clubs in an African club football competition final after Kotoko and Hearts contested the first Confederation Cup final in 2004.

Group B of the Confederation Cup is an all North African affair which features two Moroccoan teams with Fath Union Sports and Kawkab Athletic drawn against Etoile du Sahel and Ahly Tripoli.

The flagship African Champions League is also set to provide some fascinating contests.  South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, restored just before the draw after Congo DR’s AS Vita were thrown out would have their hands full in the group stages.

The South African champions face Nigeria’s Enyimba, Zamalek of Egypt and the Algeria outfit Es Setif in group B. Group A will revive an age old rivalry between Al Ahly of Egypt and the Ivorian giants ASEC Mimosa. The other teams in the group are WAC of Morocco and Zesco United.
