National Cathedral Wahala: Rev. Eastwood Anaba, Archbishop Duncan-Williams resign from Board of Trustees

0

The Founder and General Overseer of United Denominations of Action Chapel Churches Worldwide, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and President of the Eastwood Anaba Ministries, Rev. Eastwood Anaba have resigned from the Board of Trustees overseeing the construction of the National Cathedral in Ghana.

The National Cathedral, a project initiated to serve as a national place of worship and a symbol of unity and pride for Ghanaians, has been a subject of debate and controversy since its inception.

In a statement signed by both Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Reverend Anaba, they explained that the decision to resign was due to the failure of the government to appoint an independent accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to the National Cathedral.

“Despite our prayers, best hopes and wishes, unfortunately, a needed audit to help restore public confidence and trust in this consequential project has not been enacted to the best of our knowledge. Since January 2023, we awaited news to no avail, regarding the finding of the audit.

“We, therefore, regret that as a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit to you our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral.”

The two respected clergymen in January 2023 called for an immediate suspension of the construction of the National Cathedral pending an audit of the project.

In a letter to the Board of Trustees, the two eminent clergymen also stated that the current economic climate in Ghana makes it impossible for the timely completion of the project hence the call for its suspension until improvement in the economic fortunes of the country.

“The current economic climate in Ghana presents obstacles to the timely construction and completion of the National Cathedral… We, therefore, resolve That in the spirit and cause of transparency and accountability to the Ghanaian people, the current Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral shall appoint an independent, nationally recognized accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to and spent by the National Cathedral,” the two clergymen said in a memo.

Recall that the founder and leader of the Lighthouse Chapel International, Bishop Dag Heward-Mills had also resigned from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project in August 2022.

Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema’s song Calm Down has fallen off the Billboard Hot 100 after a record 57 weeks.

“It made history, becoming the longest-charting and most successful African song of all time,” the music monitoring platform Chart Data said on X.

The song smashed the 35-week record held by fellow Nigerian Afrobeats star Wizkid’s song Essence.

Calm Down entered the Billboard Hot 100 in September last year, about seven months after its release.

The captivating song, which Billboard magazine music analysts described as “a melancholy slow jam with a subtle hypnotic draw”, has gripped music enthusiasts worldwide since its release.

Calm Down’s massive global popularity is partly due to American pop star Selena Gomez featuring on the song, though her part was small.

The song peaked at position three on the Billboard Hot 100, the most prestigious music ranking in the US, making it the highest-charting song on which an Afrobeats musician was the lead artist.

Fans of both Rema and Selena have celebrated the song’s historic achievement following the news of its exit from the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

It has broken more than a dozen records. Last month it became the most streamed Afrobeats song on Spotify and the first African artist-led song to hit one billion streams on the music platform.

The song’s enduring international success has thrust 23-year-old Rema into the ranks of prominent Afrobeats artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido.

Last month, the song won the inaugural Best Afrobeats song at the MTV VMA Awards, edging out other popular Afrobeats artists.

In a post shared on X on September 17, 2023, the former president, who was reacting to a flyer with a quote he supposedly made, said the words being attributed to him were false.

The flyer by dailyinsightonline.com indicated that Mahama said that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would have paid more attention to the flood victims if they were Ashantis.

Akosombo Dam Spillage: Hotels, recreational businesses along Volta Lake count their losses

0

The Ghana Hotels Association has announced that the hospitality Industry in the Volta and Eastern Regions have been heavily impacted as a resulted of the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) commenced the spillage of excess water in the Akosombo and Kpong hydro dams on September 15, 2023.

The spillage has forced many communities in the north, south, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region to evacuate, leaving them with no choice but to try and salvage what’s left of their belongings.

While the current inflow to the reservoir is pegged at 400,000 cubic feet of water per second, the authority says it is spilling just about 183,000 cubic feet of water, and they cannot ascertain when the spilling exercise will be over.

Meanwhile, thousands of people living along the Lower Volta Basin have been displaced with loss of property running into millions of cedis.

Speaking to Joy Business President of the association, Dr. Edward Ackah-Nyamike Jnr. Said hotels and recreational centers along the lake have been badly affected.

“The impact has been mainly on the operational areas, the outdoor sitting areas have generally been affected. It has also affected patronage of these hotels for obvious reasons. So it’s obvious these hotels at the river banks will have a lot of challenges from the spillage”, he stressed.

He told Joy Business the association will educate its members to take advantage of insurance schemes in its upcoming National Executive Council Meeting on October 18, 2023.

“We as an industry must start looking at insuring our premises against some these disasters that will befall us. We will be attending our National Executive Council Meeting this Wednesday to come up with ways to support our members who unfortunately found themselves in this situation”.

Meanwhile the association has asked its members affected by the spillage to avail themselves to the authorities for the necessary assistance and support in order to bounce back.

Dam spillage: Lake Volta Fish Farmers suffer GHC 46m blow

0

Fish farmers in Lake Volta, Ghana’s largest aquaculture production area, have suffered huge losses due to the spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams by the Volta River Authority (VRA) in September.

According to a report by Efua Konyim Okai, West African aquaculture correspondent for The Fish Site, an online platform for the global aquaculture community, the farmers lost fish with an estimated value of 46 million cedis ($3.9 million) and many cages were damaged or swept away by the flood waters.

The VRA started a controlled spill from the dams on September 15, 2023, as a safety measure to prevent flooding, and advised people in the nearby areas to take precautionary measures. However, over the next few days, the spillage caused widespread damage to the cages on Lake Volta, which is home to about 90 percent of Ghana’s cage fish farms.

The situation took a further dire turn in October when the VRA issued another warning about impending spillage. John Domozoro, CEO of PBA Farms and secretary of the Ghana Aquaculture Association, voiced the distress of the local farming community, stating, “What we are seeing is a major loss of capital to the industry and to the nation. This will certainly affect the supply and prices of fish in Ghana and even neighbouring countries. The serious thing is that this is not over. We could witness more of such occurrences.”

Witnesses to the catastrophe, like Sejiro Oke-Tojinu, an aquaculture executive attending a workshop in the area, expressed sheer disbelief at the scale of the destruction. “I have never seen such damage in my life,” he lamented, describing the sight of numerous fish cages, now debris, being carried away by the spillage.

“I could see, from my hotel, lots of cages accompanied by aquatic waste, being washed away. Lots of resources have been lost, and my heart goes out to the affected farmers,” he explained.

In response to the crisis, the Fisheries Commission has advised farmers on emergency measures, including relocating their cages closer to the riverbanks and strengthening their anchorage. Additionally, there is an emphasis on the urgent need for affordable insurance packages for fish farmers, as discussions with insurance companies are currently underway.
