Michael Gambon, actor who played Dumbledore in Harry Potter dies at age 82

0

Renowned actor Sir Michael Gambon has passed away at the age of 82, according to his family.

Sir Michael was most famous for his portrayal of Professor Albus Dumbledore in six out of the eight Harry Potter films.

He had a prolific career spanning six decades, during which he excelled in television, film, theater, and radio, earning four Bafta awards. His wife, Lady Gambon, and son, Fergus, shared that their “beloved husband and father” passed away peacefully in a hospital, surrounded by his family, after battling pneumonia.

Sir Michael’s family relocated to London when he was a child, but he marked his inaugural stage performance in Ireland in 1962, starring in a production of Othello in Dublin.

His career soared when he became one of the founding members of Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre acting ensemble in London, ultimately securing three Olivier awards for his outstanding performances in National Theatre productions.

He was notably recognized for his role as French detective Jules Maigret in the ITV series Maigret and gained acclaim for portraying Philip Marlow in Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective on the BBC.

Sir Michael assumed the iconic role of Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in the immensely popular Harry Potter film series, taking over the character following the passing of Richard Harris in 2003.

His extensive filmography includes appearances in the big-screen adaptation of Dad’s Army, Gosford Park, and The King’s Speech, where he portrayed King George V, the father of King George VI who struggled with a stutter.

He received Emmy nominations for his role as Mr. Woodhouse in an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma in 2010 and for his portrayal of President Lyndon B Johnson in Path to War in 2002. Additionally, he received a Tony nomination in 1997 for his performance in David Hare’s play Skylight.

Sir Michael Gambon was knighted in 1998 in recognition of his contributions to the entertainment industry. Despite his Irish heritage, he had become a British citizen during his childhood.

Revered as “The Great Gambon” within acting circles, his final stage appearance occurred in 2012 in a London production of Samuel Beckett’s play All That Fall.

I almost joined occultism before I met Bullet – Wendy Shay

0

Popular Ghanaian songstress Wendy Shay has opened opened up about her journey in the music industry and her encounter with occultism, saying she might have ventured into it if not for her meeting with her current manager, Bullet.

The “Heaven” hit-maker, shared her experiences during an interview with Andy Dosty on Hitz-FM on September 28. She revealed that upon her return to Ghana from Germany, she had embarked on a quest to find a higher power.

“Around 2020/2021, I wanted to find spirituality for myself,” Wendy Shay explained.

When questioned about whether she delved into occultism as part of her spiritual exploration, she clarified that she “didn’t really go too deep” into it.
Instead, she had been in contact with her grandfather, who had expertise in such practices before meeting her current manager, Bullet.

“I wanted to start practicing those things, but then I met Bullet right when I really wanted to get deep into those things,” Wendy Shay added.

According to Wendy Shay, Bullet had advised her to attend church with him before signing her to Rufftown Records as an artist. He explained that for her star to shine, she needed to align herself with his power, which he identified as the light of Jesus Christ.

“He told me he follows the light, and the light is Jesus Christ, and for me to be in alignment with him, I had to go to church with him.”

Wendy Shay admitted that initially, she attended church with Bullet for the sake of being signed as an artist. However, she had a encounter during one of these church visits when “the Holy Ghost just arrested me.”

She further explained that her decision to settle with Christianity in her quest for spirituality stemmed from the challenges she faced in her life and the music industry.

“Because of the things I had faced in my life and in the industry. It opened my eyes to the spirituality of this world, we all know how crazy the industry is, there are so many dark forces here. So I knew I had to find protection, and that was God,” she said.

Movie Industry is not dead; produce good movies and stop complaining – Juliet Asante to Ghanaian Film-Makers

0

The Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), Juliet Asante, is charging Ghanaian filmmakers to produce good movies and stop saying the movie industry is dead.

And that any producer complaining that the movie industry is dying or dead probably has nothing good to offer.

Ms Asante mentioned this during an interview with Graphic Showbiz last Thursday, September 21.

“I don’t know why anyone would say the movie industry in Ghana is dead or dying. We are doing amazingly well. More than 20 movies have been released this year. I have watched most of them and they are incredible.

“I would therefore encourage movie producers to do more because the industry needs compelling stories told. Any producer who sits there and complains simply has nothing good to offer,” she said.

According to Ms Asante, who is also the founding president of the Black Star International Film Institute, organisers of the annual Black Star International Film Festival (BSIFF), Ghanaians are ever ready to patronise good movies if they are well executed.

“We all love to watch movies and I don’t believe Ghanaians will reject any good one. See, why are Yvonne Nelson and Shirley Frimpong Manso filling the cinemas anytime they bring out new movies? This shows Ghanaians have love for our films. We just have to do more,” she added.

As a way of getting Ghanaians to patronise local movies, she said the NFA has collaborated with movie producers to screen more local movies at the Ghana Cinema Week which began last year.

“The NFA is on the agenda to get more Ghanaians to watch our movies and we are doing that with Ghana Cinema Week in December.

“Last year, we had a lot of Ghanaians come to the Black Star Square to watch great movies from our producers and we are doing same this year. We will screen more than 10 movies and we entreat our people to come in their numbers to watch,” she stated.

Ms Juliet Asante who is a filmmaker and an actress has featured in movies including Twin Lovers, Fresh Blood, Tears of Blood, Ripples, Thread of Ananse and Deadly Voyage.

Her film, Silver Rain, was nominated for Best Film in West Africa and Best Costume at the 2015 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA).

Court to decide late gospel singer Osinachi’s husband’s no-case submission Oct 17

0

A federal capital territory (FCT) high court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has fixed October 17 for the ruling of the no-case submission filed by Peter Nwachukwu, husband of Osinachi, the late gospel singer.

The gospel singer, who passed away on April 8, 2022, was initially thought to have died of throat cancer.

But associates claimed it was connected to an assault by her husband who was later arrested.

The federal government had filed a 23-count charge against Peter over the death of Osinachi.

After pleading not guilty, Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, the presiding judge, remanded the defendant to the Kuje correctional facility pending further hearing.

The prosecution had called 17 witnesses to testify during the trial, which commenced on June 20, 2022, and ended on March 10, 2023.

The National Hospital in Abuja would later issue an autopsy report, which stated that there was “no mark of violence on the deceased”.

The report listed the cause of Osinachi’s death to include “generalised organ pallor; bilateral leg swelling; fluid in the sac containing the heart; tumor deposits in and on the heart, lungs, kidneys; massively enlarged heart and fluid around the lungs which restrict breathing”.

Following the report, I. A. Aliyu, the defendant’s lead counsel, proceeded to file a no-case submission, implying that Nwachukwu had no case to answer.

Aliyu said evidence presented by the medical practitioners exonerates Nwachukwu from the allegations of culpable homicide and domestic violence.

He said the autopsy report confirms that Osinachi died “solely as a result of outgrowth tumors, which resulted in cardiac tamponade, the primary cause of death and abnormal growth of tissue (cancer) which is a secondary cause of death”.

The lawyer insisted that “there was no mark of violence on the deceased at the time the autopsy was conducted”.

Aliyu also claimed that the children (aged 14 and under) were “tutored” on what to say during their testimony against their father.

At the resumption of the hearing on Tuesday, Aliyu prayed to the court to upload his no-case submission and dismiss the defendant.

However, the prosecution counsel requested the court to dismiss the defendant’s submission while ordering him to enter defense in the case.

Nwosu-Iheme later adjourned the ruling to October 17.

Asked to choose between Shatta Wale and Stonebuoy, Samini said he was going to choose Shatta Wale because Shata had a lot more under his belt. He stated that Shatta Wale was from his “era” and that’s an important factor to state as he has become the phoenix of their generation.

Regarding Kwame Eugene and Kidi, Samini opted to go for Kidi as he felt Kidi has “that” international appeal to his craft while Kwame Eugene was more vested in promoting our local version of Afrobeat.

Afcon: Morocco to host in 2025 and Kenya-Uganda-Tanzania to host in 2027

0

Morocco will host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), the Confederation of African Football (Caf) has announced.

A joint East African bid from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania has also won the rights to hold the 2027 tournament.

Morocco replaced Guinea, who was stripped of the tournament in October last year because of concerns about infrastructure and facilities.

Zambia and a joint Nigeria-Benin bid were also in the running for 2025. But they agreed to withdraw in order to allow Morocco to prove its worth in the hope it would increase the chances of Africa hosting the World Cup.

Morocco is jointly bidding for the 2030 World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

Patrice Motsepe, president of organisers CAF, said all of the options for both tournaments would have made Africa “proud”.

He added the decisions had been based on the level of infrastructure made available by bids, including facilities, accommodation and hospitals.

“The decision that was taken today was to focus on African unity, development and growth, in the context of those countries withdrawing,” Motsepe said of Morocco’s success, which also came after Algeria withdrew on the eve of the vote.

“A huge amount of money is being spent on Morocco for 2025. The bid from Morocco to host the World Cup is not just for Morocco, but for the whole of Africa.”

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania’s selection represents the first time nations from the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) will stage the tournament since Ethiopia in 1976.

“The three nations came together because our standards and requirements are very high,” added Motsepe, likening expectations for the organisation of tournaments to those held by European administrative body Uefa and the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol).

“Sometimes it requires hundreds of millions – sometimes billions – in infrastructure. It makes me proud when football brings countries together. Afcon 2027 is going to be a huge success.”

The next tournament will take place in Ivory Coast from 13 January until 11 February 2024. The draw will take place in Abidjan on 12 October at 1900 GMT.
