As part of measures to foster peace in Ghana in 2016 elections and beyond, Scout and Guide Fellowship Ghana (SGF) has launched a peace project dubbed “Peace Gathering 2016”.
According to the President of Scout and Guide Fellowship Ghana, Dr. Albert Tetteh Botchway, the gathering is intended to among others sensitize and educate the general public to be law abiding before during and after the December 7 polls.
“What we collectively seek to do and will complete in December is only a demonstration of our preparedness to defend the pillars that ensures peace and stability in Ghana” said Dr. Botchway.
Under the project, over 2,000 youth will be selected across the 10 Regions of Ghana (200 from each region) to be sensitized and empowered to serve as peace ambassadors within their various regions.
The SGF Ghana peace gathering 2016 program will witness interesting events like public rallies, sensitization forum, peace walks including radio talk shows nationwide to sensitize the public and create awareness on the main event scheduled to come off in Accra between 23rd and 25th September 2016.
“Over 5,000 participants including the Red Cross Society of Ghana, Boys Brigade and Youth groups from all walks of life are expected to partake in biggest peaceful rally.
According to Chairman of the Board of Directors of SGF Ghana, Commissioner Dr. Mettle Nunoo, The move is not only geared towards promotion of peace but also seeks to educate the public to be mindful and desists from utterances, actions and behavior that can create confusion before during and after the elections.
Barrister Valentine Dike, Commissioner-Executive Chairman of the Scout and Guide Fellowship Ghana charged all Ghanaians to endeavor and maintain law and order as a necessary pre-requisite for ensuring peace and security in Ghana before, during and after the elections.
He noted peace is not a cheap commodity but a valuable one that can only be achieved and sustained through administration of dialogue, fairness and justice to all but not by the use of force.
The Minister of Interior in a message read on his behalf by, Ms. Adelaide Kumi Annor Chief Director of the Ministry of Interior charged all Ghanaians to maintain law and order at all times and be confident in the rule of law and the legal institutions in the country for settling electoral disputes or any other issues which they might not be satisfied with. She commended the Scout and Guides Fellowship Ghana for the initiative, calling on individuals and corporate organizations in the country to support the organization in a bid to achieve its goal.
Minister of Communications, Dr. Omane Boamah who was represented by Ms. Patricia Dovi Sampson, Chief Director at the Ministry said, “It behoves on all of us to promote peace and stability in Ghana by conducting our actions and utterances with the best moral and ethical values which are akin to the discipline and peaceful nature of Ghanaians”.
