Sister Derborah Challenges Ghana’s ‘Freedom’ Amidst Anti-LGBTQ Legislation

Musician and advocate Sister Derby has expressed her view that the term “freedom” in Ghana’s coat of arms should be eliminated.
According to her, claiming freedom is contradictory when laws such as the anti-LGBTQ exist, restricting the rights of Ghanaians. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing the lives of all individuals and suggests the abolition of the bill.

“Ghanaians are not free if our queer brothers and sisters are not free. Let’s remove the ‘freedom’ from the Freedom and Justice distin. #QueerGhanaianLivesMatter #KillTheBill,” she stated.

Parliament passed the Promotion of Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely known as the anti-LGBTQ bill, on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, after completing various consideration stages.
The bill prohibits LGBT activities, criminalizing their promotion, advocacy, and funding. Offenders may face a 6-month to 3-year jail term, while promoters and sponsors could be sentenced to 3 to 5 years in prison.
