Two persons have been confirmed dead in the Thursday dawn accident involving a military ambulance at Komenda Junction in the Central Region, which left at least a dozen passengers in critical condition.
It is emerging the passengers were workers of the defunct West African Mills Company Limited (WAMCO) in Takoradi who were travelling to Accra to follow up on a petition they presented to Parliament few weeks ago.
The two, yet to be identified, were brought to the Interbeton Hospital dead, Central Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Stephen Anokye told 3News, noting the injured have been taken to the Effia Nkwanta Hospital and Central Regional Hospital.
3News sources say a total of 16 persons are currently in critical condition at the while four others who sustained minor injuries are responding to treatment, but Mr Anokye says he is yet to get to the various hospitals to confirm the report.
He could also not confirm whether the passengers onboard the Mercedes Benz mini bus are workers of WAMCO.
The military Urvan bus with registration number 42 GA 57, which had two occupants – a driver and paramedic – was said to have rammed into an abandoned accident car at the scene at Komenda.
The abandoned accident vehicle, according to 3News sources, consequently smashed the Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus which was carrying the 22 passengers said to be workers of WAMCO.
The accident was said to have happened at 2:00am Thursday. Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service who were called in had to cut open the mangled Sprinter mini bus to rescue the passengers.
Truck turns on its side
In a related development, a truck carrying a 21-footer container loaded with teak poles from Berekum in the Brong Ahafo Region was also involved in an accident few metres from the dawn accident scene.
According to Mr Anokye, the truck turned on its side and blocked the road, but could not say what caused the accident. He said they were in touch with the Fire Service to clear the road which has now been witnessing heavy vehicular congestion.
13-year-old girl killed
Meanwhile, a 13-year old girl was Wednesday evening killed by a Ford mini bus at Biriwa near Cape Coast in the Central Region. The girl was said to be crossing the road main Cape Coast – Accra Road when the she was knocked down, killing her instantly.
The accident caused the residents to mass up to block the major road to register their displeasure about speeding by drivers, TV3’s Thomas Cann reported, noting that for about four hours, vehicles could not move due to the blockade.
The driver of the Ford vehicle which killed the girl was said to have reported himself to the Anomabo Police but was taken to the Saltpond Police over fears the angry residents of Biriwa could storm the Anomabo Police.
Our correspondent reports that residents on Thursday placed concrete blocks on the major highway as well as used sea sand to construct a temporary speed ramp in the town to check the speed of vehicles.
The situation, he reports, is causing traffic build-up in the town.
