2,411 names deleted from Western Region voters’ register

The Western Region Director of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Stephen Opoku Mensah, has confirmed that 2,411 persons – who registered with NHIS cards – have had their names deleted from the regional voters’ register.

According to him, out of the 2,411 names, a little over 400 were affected in Sekondi-Takoradi metropolis

The EC on Tuesday announced that it has deleted a total of 56,772 names of persons who registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme cards from the national register in compliance with a July 5 Supreme Court order.

The Supreme Court in a case brought by a former National Youth Organizer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan, and Evans Nimako ruled that the register must be purged of NHIS registrants.

Confirming the Region’s number to Connect FM in Takoradi on Asem Yi Dzi Ka, Mr. Opoku Mensah said the EC will publish the deleted names in the national dailies and have them also published in the various district offices of the Commission.

In a related development, Mr. Opoku Mensah said as part of preparation towards a successful election, there will be an exhibition of the voters’ register from Monday July 18 through to August 7, 2016 between 7am to 6pm daily.

He has called on the various political parties and other stakeholders to aid the Commission to organize a successful election in November.
